The Texas Rangers have excess catching, and the Tigers, Reds, and Red Sox are all looking to benefit from that surplus.
T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com has the Tigers and Reds at the top of the list of teams interested in the oldest of Texas' catchers, Gerald Laird. Laird is arbitration eligible, and therefore the most attractive option for a trade from the Rangers' perspective. Joshua Roenicke of the Reds and Zach Miner from the Tigers are mentioned as potential trade bait in exchange for Laird.
Sullivan says the Red Sox are more interested in one of Texas' younger catchers: either Jarrod Saltalamacchia, or Taylor Teagarden. Clay Buchholz would not be included in any deal, but Michael Bowden and Justin Masterson may be available.
In a separate article that followed from a conference call with Texas GM Jon Daniels, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News points out that the Rangers are not in cost cutting mode. A Laird trade might give that appearance. Another note from Grant's article - the Rangers aren't in on Koji Uehara or Kenshin Kawakami.

You mean Texas' younger catchers?

"the Rangers are not in cost cutting mode. That distinction makes a Laird trade appear more likely, since such a move would lower payroll for the Rangers."
Huh?

Never drink and blog.

I never knew someone could post this bad of an article. Good job Alex Walsh, you have accomplished posting a worse article than Phil Rogers.
Little bear, I agree. lol

Tim, I advise taking this article off.

Less likely I think. I think they need to trade one before the season starts. Laird (.319 BABIB, but his line drive % was up to 25% so some of it was deserved) and Teegarden (.409 BABIB - completely unsustainable). They are either going to split time or one is going to sit most of the time driving down at least one's value.

Evan Grant can suck one.

Fat chance getting Bucholz straight up for Salty, or Teagarden. I was kind of for it at 1st thought, then remembered how dominant Buch was in the minors, his 1st taste in the bigs and a few of his early starts last year. Don't think you trade a potential #1 for a possible decent catcher period that has yet to prove anything, regardless if the potential #1 starter is almost in the same boat.

Any rumors re: Jeff Clement's availability?
Would the price for him be as high as either Salty or Teagarden?

Sorry guys, the 'Detroit' thing was a straight up mistake, and the Grant cite was poorly worded. Check the article to see what I mean. I've taken another stab at it. I still think the articles are interesting and rumorworthy.

I'd rather keep Roenicke and let Hannigan get a shot then get Laird.

Ha, its cool Alex, nice rumors you dig up though. Keep it up man.

Good luck with all your extra catchers, Texas. You're totally deluded if you think you're going to get a potential ace for one of your third-rate catchers.
P.S. Alex, "seperate" is actually spelled separate.

Charlie Zink for one of the Texas catchers. I dont even want to give Texas him.

Its very simple, JD. Either the Red Sox give up Buchholz, or they don't get Salty or Teagarden. Maybe Texas throws in someone else, but I would rather keep those two catchers than get some garbage, overhyped Red Sox prospect like Masterson or Bowden.

I concede that yes, many Rangers fans seem pretty deluded when it comes to what they should get in return for a guy like Laird. But many Red Sox fans seem to be infected with this same disease - at least they show signs of the having many of the same symptoms.

Best scenario, Varitek accepts arbitration, Theo makes deal during year. Call me superstitious, but when Gagne pitched against Red Sox for Texas, he did good. Trade made for Gabbard and Murphy I was mad, but thought well to get someone good who have to give a little. He got here he was terrible. This sounds like same thing to me. Saw all of these people in the minors, Masterson, Bowden, Bucholz, none of Texas catchers, except Salty and Laird on TV. Be honest, none impress me. What scares me about Teagarden is he started only 12 major league games at catcher, and in those games he made 3 errors. .961%. Laird 1225 career at bats with only 25 HRS, defense is not good avg. .970 fielding %, got guys bouncing around majors who could do that. Salty c-1b, always scares me. Atlanta's Bobby Cox has a keen eye for young talent, he never would have made that trade for Teixiera, if Salty was a great hitter. No one can see the future but in this case trade like this is more of a gamble that could fail for the Sox. Masterson, pitched very good for kid, Bowden one game did alright and won it. Bucholz, too much talent to take chance of getting rid of AT THIS POINT. Too much of a coincidence, like Gabbard and Murphy, for Gagne.

That's not true for Masterson, he pitched pretty brilliantly in both starting and relief roles and did a good job both starting and in in relief role and as it now stands, would probably slide into the 3 or 4 hole of the Rangers rotation as a 23 year old w/ a nasty sinker and a side arm throwing guy whom can hit 95mph on the gun. When was the last time someone hit that high with a deceptive sidearm motion? Pitced in 9 posteason games and effective in them all, yeah, Masterson himself is might IMO be too much g\for either as well, he is tough game tested and has proven his worth, 36 games, including 9 starts and 9 post season appearances as well.
Offer the Rangers Bowden, or move onto Montero and Molino from SF,

Sorry worded that wrong. Every kid Red Sox had that I saw in Minors Masterson, Bowden, Bucholz, really impressed me. Believe me maybe just a little more seasoning, but they are very good young pitchers. Oh by the way last year Salty 24 games at first base 9 errors. .960%. Career 139 games at 1st and Catcher, 23 errors, .977 fielding %. Red Sox should just keep developing with in organization at this point for catchers. Texas asked for Masterson and Bowden too for their catchers, right there I would stop any trade talk with them. They think Theo is stupid.
