Manny Feels Ignored; Threatens Retirement

Just when you thought you'd seen it all from Manny Ramirez... here we go again.

Ken Davidoff writes that Manny is feeling ignored on the free agent market, and will consider retiring if he doesn't receive a good offer soon.

I give this about a 0.3% chance of being a legitimate threat, and about a 99.7% chance that this is the old cliche of Manny being Manny at this point.

The Dodgers took a two-year, $45MM offer off the table when free agency began. The Yankees have interest but are unlikely to pursue if they land another quality starting pitcher. The Nationals have been thrown around, but they're wrapped up in Mark Teixeira right now. In the meantime, it's good to know Manny is still enjoying himself...

Ramirez told a friend that he spends most of his time working out, watching cartoons and playing video games.

haha this is funny. Especially the working out, watching cartoons, and playing video games

"Ramirez told a friend that he spends most of his time working out, watching cartoons and playing video games."

I can't help but laugh.

maybe he can get together with Bonds and cry about it...if he werent such a butt hole he may not have so much trouble finding work

and people said that Adam Dunn doesn't really care about baseball...

On a related note, Manny's wife is pretty hot.

i would like to see manny on the other side of the yanks-sox rilvary.

Manny is a very good Madden player. I have his online username. We hit the sticks online all the time. He uses the Pats though, the cheesy bastard. Everybody knows only scrubs use the Pats in Madden, but it is just Manny being Manny.

This is hilarious.

I would like to see Manny ANYWHERE BUT on othe other side of the Yanks-Sox rivalry.

Stephen, Cardsfan...

My sentiments exactly. I could've added it to the Manny Ramirez Rumors thread... but it was just too worthy of its own headline.

Manny's always good for some form of entertainment it seems.

The cartoons part is priceless. :)

nrmax88, you serious? i would love to get his gamertag. lol

WAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! GIVE ME MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OR ELSE I'LL TAKE MY BAT AND GO HOME!!

Jeesh

"Hey Cash!!! Cut this man a check already!"

"Waaaahhhh...Give me million and millions or I'll take my bat and go home".

Hey Cash. Feed the baby, please?

I'd love to see his guy in court:

"Mr. Ramirez, you have been charged with two counts of first degree murder. How do you plead?"
"Not guilty, ya honor."
"On what grounds?"
*close up of Manny as he throws his hands up*
"It's just Manny Being Manny!"
*canned laughter*
*Manny Being Manny theme song plays*

What an offseason. First it's the Jake Peavy circus and now it's this. What could possibly be next.

I guess this is Boras's form of adding options to jack up the price. As a Dodger fan I was hoping to recoup the picks we'd get if he signed with someone else. Isn't this the same thing that Saito did last year?

he's beginning to realize that the 5 or 6 year deal he wants just isn't going to happen.

he's gonna have to take 2 or 3 years and like it.

god im so glad the sox dont have to deal with this anymore and i feel bad for the poor souls that do. manny ramirez is like a suicidally depressed girlfriend who is jessica alba hot, sure shes super hot, but shes driving you crazy because shes insane, thats manny in my family guy way of explaining him

Tampa Bay signing Manny would be hilarious.

Manny should sign there just for the shock value/attention.

Too bad the Rays don't have the 25MM to throw at him.

"Waaaahhhh...Give me million and millions or I'll take my bat and go home".

"Free agency doesn't deserve me"

my bad...the type pad is buggin'.

Go on and Get yours Manny!!!

Or you could always retire and become a professional comedian!!

C-Snips, that's hilarious.

Yo ho ho, it's the Manny life for me! Tough life but someone's gotta live it.

I hope my Dodgers re-sign him anyway, and think they're doing the right thing sticking to their guns. Should be a three year deal with vested option for 4th, and that's it. He's not gonna get more than that.

Who cares, let the greedy selfish bastard retire. Hes a joke, one less ass in baseball.

"Ramirez told a friend that he spends most of his time working out, watching cartoons and playing video games.

He also enjoys caring for and feeding his unusual family pet, the drama lama. 'I love having the drama lama around' said Manny. 'He's so cute when you don't give him enough attention; he hides behind the supply shed or pretends his hoof is hurt, just too trick us into checking on him. He's so smart!' Manny went on the explain that his kids love the drama lama so much, they parade around the house all day imitating the drama lama's trademark vocal call, 'BBBAAAAWWWWWWW'.

this is the time for Minaya to swoop in offer him 2 years 50 million with an option for a third

1-800-WWWWWAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE. My *&^%$# hurts!

"Who cares, let the greedy selfish bastard retire. Hes a joke, one less ass in baseball."

If by joke you mean easily the best right handed hitter of this generation, then you are right. Good work.

yo ben burrow you keep posting those links to your blog, your gonna git kicked out.

"this is the time for Minaya to swoop in offer him 2 years 50 million with an option for a third"

We disagree on Beimel but I am with you all the way on this one.

this is a no brainer. He is contemplating retirement (though doubtfully serious) Minaya has done a good job so far and if he locks up Manny with a 2 year 50 million dollar deal with an option for a 3rd year. Without a doubt he should make that deal

"Ramirez told a friend that he spends most of his time working out, watching cartoons and playing video games."

He's worth the money just for that news fact.

he wants a four year deal, if hed take a two year deal he would be in LA.

i hope to go espn give him his own tv show about ANYTHING! i would so watch it, as long as he were hosting, he could take about baseball, politics, video games, it would be to good for words

There is no way this guy has 4 more good years in him. I dont believe they gave him an option for a third year. I think if Minaya gives him 50 mil for 2 years then an option worth 15 million, then the mets woudl get him.

he is obviously doing this to get the yankees involved

It's nice to see Manny threatening to quit after the season instead of during it.

Minaya should offer Manny anything he wants cuz it would be the right thing for the mets

boras slammed the idea of a 2 year deal, manny would to. he didnt create all that controversy to take a two year deal, he played good ball, he can get a 2 year deal. he just isnt at the top of anyones list because hes a headcase. once teixiara is gone he will sign somewhere, im pretty sure it will be with the dodgers

*get a 4 year deal (i really should get checked for dyslexia)

Manny is totally out of touch, he should have took the Dodgers deal when it was out there. He ought to fire Boras because he is not giving him good advice.

One can only hope.

It's nice to see Manny threatening to quit after the season instead of during it.

Nice.

"It's nice to see Manny threatening to quit after the season instead of during it."

Post of the day!

I personally would love to see him with the Yanks as their DH. Obviously they would have to trade Matsui, probably for a couple of mid-level prospects (Seattle anyone? Or over to SF for Sanchez like rumored last year? Not sure if that is still feasible though). Could you imagine Manny and A-Rod batting back-to-back? Two of the best righthanded bats in this era of baseball as the 3-4 combo. Can't get much better than that. I would slot A-Rod 3rd and Manny 4th. That should also give Jeter some better looks as the number 2 hitter. And if the Yanks pull off that trade for Cameron.. that's going to be one mighty fine line-up.

1. LF Damon
2. SS Jeter
3. 3B A-Rod
4. DH Manny
5. C. Posada
6. RF Nady
7. 1B Swisher
8. CF Cameron
9. 2B Cano

I love that line-up right there.

I hate these yankee fans who think because they are the yankees that they are going to sign every free agent out there because they can. It just makes me take pity on you guys since you had to beg CC to play for you guys and he haggled you guys into 7 years 160 million. Go address your already horrible defensive outfield and not sign an even worse fielder. You fans are just annoying

rugrats, dumbbells, & madden: manny's winning combination.

I wonder if there is any kind of trophy for the numbers of dumb statements ever made. Manny would win easily...

Seriously, I didn't think that would be original. I figured somebody would have said it already.

Just another jaded Sox fan who thinks the Sox would have won it all again if Manny had not given up.

actually a Mets fan if your refering to me

Indiana

So what, the yankees have a bunch of money. Its the only good thing they have going for them right now. What do you want them to do? Not use it?

Actually a Mets fan if you are infact referring to me

It's nice to see Manny threatening to quit after the season instead of during it.

Posted by: Gstill45 | December 11, 2008 at 08:06 PM

Love it.

No I'm fine with them using it, i'm not fine with every egotistical fan thinking that they will sign every free agent out there. Its just annoying

Manny !! Go ahead and retire ! You are a pathetic human being for the way you mailed it in with the Red Sox last year.
It is always about you. I don't care how good of a hitter you are, any GM who signs you will regret it when you lay down again because you want more. I would love to see you retire !!

Threat? At this point, who would really consider this anything but a blessing? Go home and cry into it, Manny.

Also, I guess Manny was serious when he said he really wanted to retire a Dodger.

So last offseason Manny was busting his hump in Arizona and showing up to S.T in the best shape of his life during what he decided would be his contract year.

Now....he is on the couch, playing video games and eating cheetos.

As great as Manny is, I think you can look at him two ways.

1. The Dodgers don't make the playoffs without him.

2. The Red Sox don't make the playoffs with him

Which Manny would a team get? Once he has his money, my guess is #2

Indiana..

Not only do we think we are going to sign every free agent out there, we also think we are going to trade for every available player we want.

Live with it.

That is why you are completly egotistical and obnoxious.

Obnoxious breeds more obnoxious.
But thanks, I try.

Too bad your image of Yankee fans is so distorted Indiana. I'm a die-hard Yankee fan, yet I know that there's no logical way we are going to sign every great free agent. Can I dream? Sure. I know it's not going to happen though.

I have a feeling Texeria will not sign with the Yanks. Do I want him? HELL YES. He is our exact solution for 1B that we've been looking for. Someone that hits for power, average, and is a GG defender. That combo we haven't had at 1B in a long time. We've either had the power and iron hands/tree-like range of Giambi, or the GG defense and just hanging in there offense of Doug M.

As long as the Yankees are the Yankees, you are going to have the people that want to envision everyone they want playing for them. It's bound to happen. Just deal with it.

"As great as Manny is, I think you can look at him two ways.

1. The Dodgers don't make the playoffs without him.

2. The Red Sox don't make the playoffs with him"

What the hell? The Red Sox don't make the playoffs with Manny? Are you on glue?

It's funny all these armchair GM's that talk about how any GM who signs Manny will regret it because he is such a cancer blah blah blah. Answer me this then.... why has Manny won everywhere he has played in his career?

The Reds should swoop in and offer him a 3 year 59 million dollar contract and tell him that they want him and I bet he signs even though he shouldn't

STUPID YANKEE FANS you couldn't get Texiera if you wanted to now that you overpaid for fat ass Sabathia. Ha Ha you will not make the playoffs again. Sabathia will have an ERA above 4.00 mark it down.

Yankees 2010 Lineup:

LF-Damon
SS-Jeter
LF-Manny
3B-AROD
CF-Josh Hamilton
1B-Texiera
C -Posada
LF-Nady
2B-Cano

sounds great to me

lolllllllllllllll

I bet you a million gazillion trajillion yen he doesn't.

I find it funny that when the Yankees do sign a bunch of free agents, they still can't win a world series. Since 2000, just think of all of the free agents the Yankees have signed... and how many rings? 0. It is a fact they have the most money, but if you don't use it smartly, then they will never win. CC is a start.

That couldn't happen even if they found a jeanie lamp while tearing down the old yankee stadium. Josh Hamilton in New York City.....I bet that would go over like a pill addict locked in the Bayer factory. Thanks for adding the LOL, we don't want the Yankee dumb asses to daydream too long.

yankeegirl49, "Live with it"

Amazingly witty retort from another amazingly smart Yankee fan. We'll just start calling you the 'Comeback Queen' from now on.

Robert, i am a yankee fan

"STUPID YANKEE FANS you couldn't get Texiera if you wanted to now that you overpaid for fat ass Sabathia."

STUPID RED SOX FAN. What are you talking about? we cleared over 80 million in cap space this offseason. We can still afford Tex, Manny, Burnett, and Pettite if we wanted to.

You need to learn not to use the same word in a sentence twice, its called being redundant. All yankee fans are redundant and they overspent on an out of shape pitcher that will fall off the cliff starting this year. No way he opts out and you are stuck with a far worse contract than the Kevin Brown debacle of a few years ago. Once again the Yankees have found a way to shoot themselves in the foot while Boston will go out and get Texiera and crush you all over again.

This, however, is a true work of art:

"It's nice to see Manny threatening to quit after the season instead of during it."

The only thing that I would like to see more than Manny retiring, is Manny going to the Yankees and getting into a fight with CC The Hut on opening day. And both of them becoming permanently disabled as a result.

You can have Burnett and Manny all you want. Many is terrible at defense and you are not even in the game with Texiera(no talks with agent...no offer). Pettite is not going to resign with you although I wish he would. It will be great to watch your over rated pitchers crying because they have no defense what so ever. How will you get Josh Hamilton? Spend spend spend and I will watch you go down like the Yankess always do...they break down in the playoffs because they are not a team of team players they are a team of individuals that can't get along or play as a real team.

"The only thing that I would like to see more than Manny retiring, is Manny going to the Yankees and getting into a fight with CC The Hut on opening day. And both of them becoming permanently disabled as a result."

Yet, Yankee fans are called classless and obnoxious.
The one thing I would NEVER do is wish injury on any player no matter how much I hated them.

Its people like you that make me hope karma exists.

Me thinketh perhaps the Red Sox should sign him as a fourth outfielder. Also his value as a pinch hitter would be fantastic...the opposing team couldn't pitch around the entire line-up (including Varitek).

(yes, I am kidding.)

Manny is playing the attention game since he didnt make any real headlines or news. Only that the LA Dodgers made a small offer to him. He might wind up with the Dodgers,Angels or the Yankees

Manny lol

Ah manny being manny, the uncle who acts like an a**hole but everyone loves.
excuse the pseudo language lol.

Just give him what he wants Colleti. It does not matter and its not going to hurt you. YOU already have the reputation of being an idiot

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Manny being Manny.
Playing Video Games.
hahahaha

Awesome, I bet Cash signs him too a two year, 55 mil deal. Yankee offseason moves -

We will trade Jorge Posada and Alan Horne for Joe Mauer. The Twins need pop in their lineup, and Posada can provide that. Sign Mark Texiera to a 8 year, 180 million dollar deal. Trade Robinson Cano and Phillip Hughes for Chase Utley. Trade Xavier Nady (Coming off a career year) for Alex Rios, because the Blue Jays also need a legit 30 HR bat. Trade Melky for Cameron, and put Damon out in left. Let Swisher and Bill hall be good bench players.

C - Mauer
1B - Tex
2B - Utley
3B - A-Rod
SS - Jeter
OF - Rios
OF - Cameron
OF - Damon

Sign Derek Lowe to a 4 year deal and Ben Sheets to a two year.

P - Sabathia
P - Sheets
P - Lowe
P - Wang
P - Chamberlain

If you had to read all the way down to here to find out this was a completely sarcastic post, you are an idiot. When you have 80 million dollars coming off the book, the general idea is to spend it.

Well by now Boras is preparing damage control, or awaiting yet another pink slip from a player.

The Yanks mind as well buy the MLB. They can have whoever they want, and if they want they can name every team the Yankees so they can win it all every year.

As an O's fan it is annoying being in the same divison as the Sox and Yanks, but you deal with it. They have the money, so more power to them. They have the huge fanbase and history that's why they are so successful

B3NG4L,
Come on man. What is this. A video game. The Phillies are not going to trade Utley. Rios is not going to get traded for Nady (Rios better and higher potential)and the Twins will never make that trade either.

Wow. Really? Wow.

Nothing gets past you, huh?

Manny will not retire, even if he has to accept a 2 year offer and B3NG4L,you can dream all you want about the Phillies trading Utley,it's not happening especially for garbage like Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano.

You're a class A dipsh*t if you think Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes are garbage. Phil Hughes would easily be the best prospect the Phillies had, not even close. Robinson Cano is a ridiculously talented 2B and almost any team would love to have him.

Funny. I thought I remember that Manny retired in Boston last August.

"You're a class A dipsh*t if you think Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes are garbage. Phil Hughes would easily be the best prospect the Phillies had, not even close. Robinson Cano is a ridiculously talented 2B and almost any team would love to have him."

With Hughes being hurt, I'll let him have a couple more years to pan out, but c'mon, take the pinstriped glasses off and look at Robbie Cano objectively.

1) Cano cannot take a walk.

Robbie's highest BB% in a season was 5.9%, which was 20% higher than any other professional year he's had. In 2008, he was sitting around 4.2%, in the bottom 20 players of the entire league with enough qualified at bats

With the exception of Ichiro, career .300+ hitters only maintain their average solely by establishing and maintaining high walk rates. This is why players like Juan Pierre fall apart after posting a few .300+ batting seasons and having holes in their swing exposed.

2) Cano's BABIP is not maintainable.

In both of Cano's .300+ avg years, he maintained a BABIP that was at least 30 points higher than his expected BABIP based off his line drive rates. Again, with the exception of players like Ichiro with tremendous speed that can steal a few infield base hits, a very high BABIP that is at least 10% above your expected BABIP is not maintainable over a large stretch.

To satiate any "Yankee-hating bias" this is the exact same reason why Jacoby Ellsbury is really nothing more than Juan Pierre, and NOT the next coming of Kenny Lofton.

With, at best, average defense, Robbie Cano is not a blue chip player, and definitely not worth these Matt Kemp rumors. While his 2006 and 2007 seasons were him playing above his head, he did have some bad luck in the 2008 season that would suggest he probably a murky combination of the two.

I think the actual Robbie Cano is a combination of the two, probably a .280/.320/.460 hitter. I think he may squeeze out a couple .300 avg season over his career, but until he learns how to takes some walks and get on base, he is NEVER going to be an elite player until his ability to recognize bad pitches and generate some walks improves.

Bill James pegs Cano for a .295/.330/.455 line, and while I think that's pretty accurate, I actually think he contains a little more power potential, maybe even close to a .460ish range in slugging.

Best case scenario for Yankee fans? Cano gets hot and gets dealt.

To Saber Guy,

The only way a player can get away with a BB% that low is to have a K% under 8% like Pedroia.

Exactly, and he's consistently had strikeout numbers in the 11-12% range.

So, when the Nationals get dumped by Teixeira, who at 28 can get both the contract he wants AND sign with a competitive club, doesn't it stand to reason that they will give Manny a four year deal to put fannies in the seats of their new stadium?

It's not like Manny cares about winning. He's made over a $160 million in his career, yet still feels the $20 million club options that he accepted with the Red Sox and the $45 million offer from the Dodgers are so repugnant and insulting, respectively, that he sat down on his team and now is "threatening" (not with money on the table) to retire.

Bottom line: Manny being Manny is about Manny getting money, so he'll sign wherever the dollars are because that is his notion of respect.

Makes you really appreciate when guys like Maddux retire or guys like Griffey stick it out with the hope of winning that elusive championship.

The yankees should sign manny to a 3 year deal, and trade damon and get a good prospect in return.
