Mark Teixeira Rumors: Saturday

11:01pm: Michael S. Schmidt at the New York Times writes:

"The Yankees are interested in signing Teixeira, according to two people in baseball with knowledge of the matter, but for the moment are unwilling to pay him more than $160 million over eight years, one of them said."

10:18pm: An update from Kat O'Brien at Newsday says "the Yankees remain on the periphery of the bidding" for Teixeira.

Scott Boras has apparently contacted Brian Cashman to inform him that an 8-year/$180MM contract would be needed to land Tex. This contradicts recent reports that estimate that the Boston Red Sox have made such an offer, since they have not signed the free agent yet.

The article also reiterates the fact that the Yankees do not have an offer out to Teixeira.

6:50pm: Lyle Spencer and Bill Ladson of MLB.com report that Teixeira will decide on where to sign in the next few days.

12:49pm: Jack Curry of the New York Times examines Boras' "patient, defiant style" and suggests the Red Sox are throwing it right back at him.

Roch Kubatko talks about how Washington's Ted Lerner is the one owner who could blow the other teams away with a Teixeira offer.  Many people seem to believe they're willing to go to ten years, $200MM.  Bill Madden suggests Lerner could be this year's "One Dumb Owner."

9:24am: Yesterday we tracked the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes as the Red Sox seemed to back out, but ultimately remained interested; the rumors continue today.

Jon Heyman writes that talks have resumed between Scott Boras and the Yankees and Angels. The Yankee front office is still deciding which slugger to pursue: Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. Heyman sees signs that "the Angels might be readying for a move," since owner Arte Moreno could consider boosting his bid from the $160-170MM range.

Heyman hears that the Red Sox bid close to $180MM, but ESPN.com reports that their bid was $165-170MM. ESPN heard from an "executive familiar with the meeting" between Teixeira's people and the Red Sox that Scott Boras seeks an eight-year deal worth $195MM.

However, when Jerry Crasnick asked Boras about this figure, he heard it was "inaccurate" and that there was "very limited discussion of economic considerations" Thursday night.

Adam Kilgore heard from a GM involved with Teixeira who believes "the Red Sox have the best offer on the table."

Michael Silverman thinks the Red Sox need to go all out for Tex and Peter Schmuck doesn't want a few million dollars to stop the O's from signing him.

When he's bored Manny is a hyper wacko who goes all ADD and beats up the traveling secretaries. But when people are rioting in the stands and spewing hate on him...he is so locked in he's unstoppable. NY fans, when Manny hits in the four slot against the Sox, you will be cracking open the brew and freakin' toasting your TV screens.

Forget Tex and the ridiculous demands from it's-all-about-Scott's-Benjamins Boras (Boras is all about Boras since he ruins the reputations of his players so they are hated and lose endorsements they would have gotten if they had signed like gentlemen for a couple mil less). Manny will get you through until the kids grow up to take over. Manny in pinstripes, batting in Fenway in October is what anyone who loves baseball wants to see.

Let Tex go develop foot problems in DC in the second year of his contract.

um, paxterj, you realize manny is represented by scott boras too, right?

These "negotiations" are taking forever. It's almost like Teixeira wants to become a permanent member of Scott Boras' Douchebag of the Month Club.

mac_1103 any deal most likely will start at 14 just like CC's deal.

I know Tex and Manny have the same bossman, but they are in different situations entirely. Boras can't get enough GMs to dance like puppets over Manny. In fact, the only team for whom Manny will play to his full capability is NY. Everyone else he will eventually go into toddler mode on, and all the other teams know it. And if Boras can't do his conquer and divide act and force too many years at ever expanding numbers, the whole house of mirrors falls apart. Manny will never command the years and total dollars as Tex at this point in his career.

The Tex thing shows Boras at his most abusive. You knew it was going to be a circus when Boras came up with that preposterous thing about how Tex is on par with Arod, Manny and Bonds as far as putting people in the stands. Riiiiight, people just lined up for Tex in Anaheim...or was that for Vlad, or Frankie, or Torii? The big galoot was the FOURTH most popular Angel and Boras quacks about his big draw.

Again, it's not the money and all the shenanigans Boras pulls that makes him harmful to mlb, it's his ability to take the best players and so poison their public image that it's hard to like them anymore. I mean, hell, Tex is a great guy. But now? After he lets his agent pull this ego trip on his behalf? How many people like Tex less now? Unless he suddenly recovers his soul and signs with the O's for the pitiful sum of $160 mil (like that'll happen), he's already made himself a few million enemies.

Calling the Yanks to raise the aunction... Boras might have difficulties to raise the market...

If the Yankees are truly at and willing to pay 8 years $160 million right now, and it will take them 8 years $180 to get it done, I would not be surprised if they take the extra step to get this done.

Obviously no one including reporters know the exact truth on all of this mess, but my point is the Yankees will never lose out on someone for that amount of a difference. That's been proven, time and time again...

So like I have been saying for the past 2 weeks, who cares and we'll all just have to wait and see..

RED SOX DYNASTY!:

As far as your comment on financial risk. Why is it a crazy finacial risk? We are talking about the Yankees here aren't we? Also they 2 of the most durable players on the game. Being A-rod and Teixeira.

The only risk in signing Mark to play first base for the next 8 years is what if Posada can't catch for the next 3 years. That's really it.

As far as Swisher goes. You can do alot of different things. Number 1 trade him, alot of other teams were interested in him before he was acquired by the Yankees. So there definitely is a want for him around the league. Number 2 try and trade Matsui and make Swisher and Damon your LF/DH players.

Everyone talks about the Yankees and their $88 million that came off in payroll this year. Look to next year for a second with Damon and Matsui(barring a trade) coming off the payroll. That's another $26 million right there. And say they add Pettite for $10 million this year and he's gone. That's $36 million coming off.

So next year maybe they don't get in on Matt Holliday because they signed Teixeira this year. Or maybe they do. Oh well, either way. But to say that signing Mark Teixeira this year is a crazy financial risk to go along with A-rod's contract is ludicrous.

This is getting hilarious, with this guy. To the point if he signs with Boston I am going to get ticked off. Just go with what we got.

Why cant the Yankees just give Teixeira 8/180 and just end all of this crap.

I'm starting to think that Boston is just trying to push Tex to the Nats and keep him out of the AL East.

Tex is simulating himself playing with both the yanks and bosox on his xbox, so that he can make a proper choice ^^

"Why cant the Yankees just give Teixeira 8/180 and just end all of this crap."

because he wants more than that. plus the sox have already offered 8 and 184.

Good point RED SOX DYNASTY

No, Boras wants more than that for him...Not necessiarly Tex....I'm sure if any other agent was Tex's agent, he would certainly be on a team by now

lol thats what i said

From what you said, I thought you were saying Tex wants more money....not Bora$

Keep Mike Lowell, let this slug go anywhere. You can see no team chemistry for Boston.

In the end I think the Yankees will move in and get Teixeira because they know that the Red Sox cannot counter that move!

The more and more I read the Boston and LA newspapers, the more and more I think that Cash should fold and give Tex a 8 year/200 mil offer. I know that really, really sounds crazy but this year was a perfect storm in terms of FA availability. The thought of keeping Tex from Boston AND severly weekening the Angels, a team that has always given us problems in the regular season as well as the post-season would give help the Yanks immensly.

If not the Yanks, then what the hell are the ANgels thinking? They haven't been able to get past Boston in the last 5 years. Why would they allow Tex to go there? Arte needs to take a page from the BOSS and pony up the cash. Vlad is on the decline and other than him they really don't have much pop in their line up. Here's a great example of a team that invested too much money in the wrong players (Tori Hunter and Gary Matthews) and now can't or doesn't want to extend themselves past a certain budget. I say sign Tex and let the "bean counters" figure out the rest! Because even in a weak west they can't assume they will win next year after losing Tex and K-Rod.

If the Yankees get Tex, this would be a very good offseason for the Yankees.

I agree with Yanksfansince78.

This is from the post at the very top of the page:

I'm not so sure Boston has offered 8/180. Why would Boras tell Cash that a 8/180 offer would get 'em Tex. Why not ask for 8/190 or 8/200?

If Cashman pulls off a deal with Tex, Steinbrenner will love Cash forever.

YanksFanSince78:

"I'm not so sure Boston has offered 8/180. Why would Boras tell Cash that a 8/180 offer would get 'em Tex. Why not ask for 8/190 or 8/200?"

If that reporting is accurate then maybe it is possible Mark prefers the Yankees over the Red Sox.

I have read in the past about his admiration for Don Mattingly. Now obviously Boras seeks top dollar but maybe if the number is close he can justify going to the team that he really prefers.

I'm not claiming to have any inside knowledge of his intentions at all. I'm just making an educated guess..

Torn on this one.

Tex is definitely the best available player but I do not want to tie up a first baseman for that long.

As someone else mentioned, one fear is Posada needing to move to first.

Another is at some point will A-Rod need to move. This is a bigger concern for me. I'd rather have Tex's bat than Jorge's and Jorge is not around as long as A-Rod.

IMO, the guy to get is Dunn. He'd be a perfect fit for Yankee Stadium.

Oh and as for the comment as to what to do with Swisher? Play him in the outfield. Over any of the other 3. Maybe platoon him with Nady - take a look at their splits.

NJYankeesFan:

I am assuming Posada will be fine to catch this year. If however in the final 2 years of his deal he can not (knock on wood) he can be plugged in as DH with Matsui being gone after the year.

A-Rod will not have to move to Firstbase for a very long time. If you're going to worry about anyone having to change positions it's Jeter. In a few years I see Jeter in Left or Right Field. Most likely left. Everyone seems to think that Firstbase is the most logical place to put position players who can't cut it anymore.

Also look at it this way for Posada maybe he goes to Leftfield. Yogi Berra did it afterall.

I don't want anything to do with Adam Dunn. While I agree his swing is built for the Stadium he strikes out way too much for my liking. And he's a DH on this team.

If Yankee Fans are worried about clogging any position in the future it should be DH not Firstbase..

The Yankees acquiring Swisher made sense, going after Teixeira does not. The Yankees have too many highly paid, aging players with long term contracts to tie up one of the positions they will have to move to for 8 or more years.

The fact that the Yankees have too many aging offensive players, is the reason why the Yankees should sign Teixeira...

A young stud offensive player like Teixeira is not available every year and he could be a foundation player for the Yankees...

Why spend 1/4 billion on starting pitching and neglect the offense?

Pat,

I agree on Jeter. I think he would make a great CF. He does not hit enough anymore to play a corner. Problem is A-Jax should be in CF for years to come.

I don't think A-Rod will need to move for years, but at some point he will, which is why a 10 year contract for Tex would be a potential problem.

If you think Dunn strikes out too much, you need to do more analysis. Yes he strikes out. So what? He also gets on a ton and has great power.

Over his career he is a 130 OBP+. Tex is a 134.

Also, there is no reason he would not be a good defensive first baseman. Statistically he has done a good job at the position when given the opportunity.

Plus he could be had for relatively cheap compared to Tex and a much shorter term.

If tomorrow was opening day for the Yankees, their line-up would be horrible. They have lost 2 RBI guys and they have a hole in their 3 spot. Signing Manny does not solve the problem. Sure he hits 35+ homeruns but he is slow, non-defensive, stubborn, and doesnt hustle. The Yanks dont need to sign a 36 year old that would cause problems within the organization. They need to sign a young, athletic, gold glove caliber, switch hitting genius, who hustles and is a team player. Who is of course Mark Teixeira. Cash should just give him the 8/180 contract and sign him and end all of this nonsense. The Redsox are out of it. Orioles are most likely done. And Angels dont seem like they will up the ante because of Juan Rivera signing. Which leaves the Nationals and Yankees. This is the time to strike and blow this whole thing out of the water.

"mac_1103 any deal most likely will start at 14 just like CC's deal."

So what? 14 + 9 = 23. That's what the Yankees are giving Sabathia in the first year of the contract: a $9M signing bonus and $14M in salary. It's structured a little funky for income tax reasons I guess, but it doesn't lower the Yankees' player cost or luxury tax.

Luxury tax is figured on AAV of salary, signing bonuses, and buyouts. Otherwise, the Yankees would just pay everybody the minimum salary every year and space out the bonuses to artificially lower their taxable payroll in any given season.

Like I said, they're at $170M for 14 players. Pettitte makes it at least $180M for 15 players. The rest of the 40 man roster takes them over $190M. Signing Teixeira or Ramirez means a payroll higher than last season, which I just don't see happening.

when u have nearly 500 more strikeouts then walks in ur career and over 300 more strikeouts then hits. something is wrong. love to the yanks sign that guy.

If the Yankees sign Tex i am a bit more worried about how dominant their lineup will be come 2010. im pretty sure everyone knows with all those OF/DH types comming off the books next year they will be going hard after Matt Holliday

God I hope Cashman is smarter than to go after Matt Holliday. Maybe he can get Dante Bichette too?

Moreno will not allow himself to be a second tier owner. It's not just the Dodgers he wants to beat, it's the world. He is going to go after either Tex or Manny hard.

NY should embrace Manny as the short term big bat they need to get over the top. People had similar complaints about Reggie Jackson back in his day and his ego worked out pretty good, didn't it? Biggest town can handle the biggest ego. How many people in Boston are wearing rings because of Manny?
