« Ricciardi: "We're Done" | Main | Mark Teixeira Signing Reactions »
7:05pm: Chico Harlan mentions three more minor league signings for the Nats: catcher Gustavo Molina, pitcher Gustavo Chacin, and infielder Jose Castillo.
Chacin, 28, won 13 games as a rookie in '05. After that he dealt with elbow and shoulder injuries but at least got his own cologne. Castillo, 28 in March, hit .246/.292/.376 in 455 plate appearances for the Giants and Astros this year.
2:54pm: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Nationals signed Corey Patterson and Jorge Sosa to minor league deals. Patterson gets $800K, while Sosa gets $850K.
Patterson, 29, was awful this year with a .205/.238/.344 line in 392 plate appearances. He was above average defensively though. The Nationals were an odd choice for him given their crowded outfield.
Sosa, 32 in April, pitched in the Astros, Mariners, and Mets organizations this year. His claim to fame was his flukey 2.55 ERA in '05 for the Braves.

Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | December 23, 2008 at 03:08 PM
Stockpiling outfielders.
Posted by: astralpanda | December 23, 2008 at 03:09 PM
they might as well try and go for Manny.
Posted by: nocode | December 23, 2008 at 03:10 PM
hah minor league those players are better then everyone but Z on their team
Posted by: Giant Deric | December 23, 2008 at 03:11 PM
yeah. stockpiling on outfielders. I suppose Corey patterson is good insurance if someone in the outfield gets injured again.
I know nothign about Jorge Sosa.
anybody got the lines on thes guys?
Posted by: phoenix88 | December 23, 2008 at 03:15 PM
Well if you can't get Tex, might as well make a splash in the Patterson pool.
Posted by: Bdlugz | December 23, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Next announcement should read, "Orioles sign Jerry Hairston Jr."

Cool, we got second place in the run and get two prizes!
This sucks

Jorge Sosa back in the NL East? Fans of Atlanta, Philly, Florida and NY should all enjoy that.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 23, 2008 at 03:33 PM
I busted out when I read Corey Patterson signs with the Nationals. This, after losing out on Tex.
Posted by: studio179 | December 23, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Jorge sosa has an average ERA (from 05 through '07) of 5.69. This is a bad pick up for the nats unless he can improve to his 2005 form
Posted by: phoenix88 | December 23, 2008 at 03:37 PM
love corey patterson...fav player
Posted by: MB8615 | December 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
At least now I don't have to worry about Dusty begging to have Corey Patterson back because he doesn't trust Dickerson in CF.
Posted by: schellis | December 23, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Nice fall back plan Nats
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 23, 2008 at 03:45 PM
hopefully, you all dont read that wrong; by average i mean mathematical.
It seems the nationals are putting alot of faith in their pitching coach.
Posted by: phoenix88 | December 23, 2008 at 03:50 PM
These two were signed to Minor League contracts because Leather Pants has to leave a space on the Major League roster for Adam Dunn.
On a related note, now that the Nationals have Corey Patterson maybe the Reds can trade Toothpick Baker to them.

Aw man. The Nats were one of the teams in the running for Wily Tavarez. Now it's up to Walt Jocketty to save Kenny Williams from himself. Come on Walt, Tavarez is the PERFECT replacement for Patterson. You know he is.....
Posted by: MPM | December 23, 2008 at 03:54 PM
this team has added so many random players this offseason it's kind of humorous.
Posted by: Leland11 | December 23, 2008 at 04:36 PM
Flukey 2.55 ERA that's funny.
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 23, 2008 at 05:41 PM
yahoo. don't know why we got patterson, but sosa seems low risk, medium reward.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | December 23, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Two words: Former. Reds.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 07:10 PM
Well, not Sosa, but minor league deals with invites to ST for pitchers to create depth is generally a good thing.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 07:11 PM
Oh but it gets better they also signed jose castillo, gustavo molina and gustavo chacin
Posted by: Dj 26 | December 23, 2008 at 08:05 PM
Nothing wrong with this, actually. Go out and get some former MLBers for cheap and who knows, maybe they can contribute.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | December 23, 2008 at 09:33 PM
no tex, but they just set the record for signing players named gustavo in one day.
Posted by: PS314 | December 23, 2008 at 09:42 PM
didn't Chacin have a good year or two with the Jays?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 23, 2008 at 09:50 PM
Is Gustavo Molina another Molina relative? He is a catcher. Just kidding. I know he is not related to Bengie, Yadier, or Jose, right? Anyway seems like some good minor pick-ups for the Nationals. Gustavo Chacin was pretty good with the Blue Jays as a rookie until injuries hit him. Maybe he just needs a fresh start and try to stay healthy. Wasn't Jose Castillo signed with the Astros for 2009. I could have sworn that he was when I read an article of him when he was traded to the Astros.

they may've missed out on teix, but they're making up for it by signing players with backstory. like chacin and patterson. hopefully the move goes over well, and i can order some of that chacin cologne

I actually like these signings a lot.. The Nats have agressively gone after a lot of the scraps in the FA market. I really doubt that any of these guys will have solid years, but I could see a few producing for a portion of the '09 season.
D-Cab with at least eat up innings (I doubt he'll do much more than that).. And you get a little bit of depth with Sosa and Chacin. Patterson will give you some depth and I think he could be a good bench player for a NL team. They still aren't going to have a winning season, but I like those moves.
Posted by: GoTribe | December 24, 2008 at 10:45 AM
These signings were for our AAA team only, and they would have happened whether or not we got Teixeira anyway.
they are just plain organizational depth, it isn't like they said "oh we didn't get Tex, let's go spend his money on Corey Patterson".
even if Tex decided to come to DC, we still would have signed these minor leaguers. we need some depth in AAA.
nice to see that people are so ridiculously short-sighted here.
