WEDNESDAY: Baldelli told Marc Topkin that more sophisticated tests have revealed "his condition is a less-severe and treatable channelopathy."
TUESDAY: From Ken Bell of ABC6 out of Rhode Island:
Great news for Rocco Baldelli. A visit to the Cleveland Clinic last week revealed that doctors had misdiagnosed his illness. Baldelli missed much of last season, and when he did play, he was limited because of extreme fatigue. Doctors thought it was mitochondrial disorder, which can be fatal. The Baldelli family told me tonight that the Cleveland Clinic diagnosed his condition as channelopathy, a non-progressive, highly treatable disease.
Bell adds that the Red Sox have not contacted Baldelli, who is a free agent. The story is also being reported by WPRI 12 out of Rhode Island.

This is just good news period. Forget baseball for a second...I'm just happy that Rocco can be treated and that it is not a fatal disease anymore. Congrats Rocco. You really are one heck of a guy.

hes a free agent and someone miss-diagnosed his crappy life threatening illness?
seriously i like rocco i could see him in a sox uni. i do hope they get away with keeping Kotsay tho
Posted by: groupid17 | December 16, 2008 at 11:41 PM
and who the hell is ken bell and what is abc6 i have lived in boston my whole life and abc has always been 5
Posted by: groupid17 | December 16, 2008 at 11:45 PM
I do feel bad for him still because any interested team is going to send him to their doctors for what i assume will be an extensive second opinion. Would love to see the guy thrive in the MLB.

Good for him as a human. And as a player he has tons of talent i hope he goes somewhere hes going to get a chance to play and fulfill his potential.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 16, 2008 at 11:49 PM
My bad, that TV station is in Rhode Island.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Wow.
I don't even care about the baseball part of this, but if he really has been diagnosed with something curable, best of luck to him. Just wow. Rocco's an absolute class act, and best of luck to him.
There's one problem though. Channelopathy is a blanket term used to describe a group of diseases which involve ion channel dysfunctions, and not one specific disease. Although all these diseases do have a few elements in common, some of them are NOT easily treatable (cystic fibrosis, is an example).

I actually have a cat named Rocco I named after him years ago haha
Posted by: delmonmvp | December 17, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Just wanna say i am very happy for him. Glad to hear this.
Posted by: diddysafan | December 17, 2008 at 12:08 AM
so happy to hear this. I can honestly say baldelli is one of those guys that was never on a team I rooted for yet I still followed his career closely.
Always hoped he'd find a way to get back to his potential, and while this is above baseball, it's so heartwarming to see he may have the chance to again flourish at the sport he loves so much.
And whoever gets this guy could possibly have the FA steal of the season if he even gets near the numbers of a few years ago...
Posted by: oaklandathleticsince88 | December 17, 2008 at 12:09 AM
This is some of the best baseball news in a while. A good guy and a good talent whose career never got off the ground the way it should have.
Here's hoping he lands somewhere where he sees significant playing time and he produces like he's capable of. Better late than never.
Posted by: my poor buccos | December 17, 2008 at 12:20 AM
He's a class act and would be nice seeing in a Phillies Uniform!
Posted by: FyreKnight | December 17, 2008 at 12:25 AM
For all of those that have seen him play he is very fun to watch. For those who followed baseball far back enough, Rocco was once the second best prospect in baseball, behind Tex and ahead of Reyes.
However, those who have had to the chance to know Rocco as a diehard fan know how great and grounded of a guy he is. I have been saying for years that a healthy Rocco would be the face of any frachise. Extremely personable, talks well, and its really hard not to like him. For example, when he was dealing with his injuries in 06, he used to carve portraites of players with a sunflower seed on stirofoam cups and auctioned them off for charity. It was also to see the other players on the team all growing beards until Rocco came back last year. Class act.
Posted by: delmonmvp | December 17, 2008 at 12:52 AM
If this is true, then it's certainly great news for Rocco and his family.
I hope that things work out the right way and we see him resign with the Rays.
Posted by: tolo316 | December 17, 2008 at 06:19 AM
Best of luck Rocco.
You'll always have a soft spot in my heart after winning me a championship (and yourself an MVP) in my Strat-O-Matic league two years ago

I'd say we strip the Tony Conigliaro award from him and give it on January 8 to Doug Davis who was voted into second place. Or perhaps these babied millionaire athletes really don't need a Tony Conigliaro Award anymore. The times have changed ($) and so have the athletes ($$$). Perhaps if one of the javeline throwers from India makes the Pirates, I'd reconsider (with all the "hadji", donut throwing, "towel head" abuses he would have to endure.
Posted by: HeadFirstSlide | December 17, 2008 at 07:30 AM
Sounds like he has one of the treatable forms - this is great news.
Posted by: Harry Pavlidis | December 17, 2008 at 08:19 AM
I wish I had bought Rocco Baldelli stock yesterday.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 17, 2008 at 08:25 AM
Wow. That definitely is great news. Best of luck, Rocco.

What the hell is wrong with you?
Posted by: soupdujour | December 17, 2008 at 08:49 AM
Great news! I tried to look a little bit more into the disease.. Really couldn't find anything, but it sounds great for Rocco.
Posted by: GoTribe | December 17, 2008 at 08:49 AM
It's easy to be misdiagnosed. Don't fool yourself into thinking any other thing.
Great news for Rocco. I always liked him. I pray he gets well and gets to do what he loves.
Posted by: The Management | December 17, 2008 at 08:49 AM
I don't believe this story.
But if this is true, screw baseball, this makes me so happy for a great guy and a great player, Rocco Baldelli.
We will cross that bridge when we have to but if this is true, bring him back to Tampa, I already wanted him as the 4th OF, if it is true, he is a fine starting DH.
Again, it is just hard for me to believe this.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 17, 2008 at 09:17 AM
What I need is a quote from Rocco, his agent, the Rays, anyone you can actually believe that this story is true.
A fake story of what he would want most is just messed(man I wish I can curse right there) up.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 17, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Very happy for him to hear that.
Posted by: joeiscool12 | December 17, 2008 at 10:34 AM
HeadFirstSlide,
Seriously?
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 17, 2008 at 11:24 AM
If Furcal doesn't sign, the Bravos will have a hole again in the OF. I would love to see him, Schafer and Heyward in the same OF.
Its great news for him and I wish him well wherever he plays.
Posted by: bbxxj | December 17, 2008 at 11:27 AM
something about a 10 foot pole comes to mind...
Posted by: 04Forever | December 17, 2008 at 11:29 AM
as i read my previous comment, i realize that was not the right way to write it, im glad his disease is not as bad as originally thought because that is terrific news, but this disease seems so very complicated and i dont know how he would be able to play on a continual basis just based on the diagnosis of this doctor
Posted by: 04Forever | December 17, 2008 at 11:34 AM
The update says Rocco might have visited with the Red Sox and the TV report says the Sox haven't even contacted him. Of course, the TV report also says he was originally misdiagnosed, which isn't true either. I'd love to see Rocco as the Sox' fourth outfielder/injury replacement for J.D. Drew. I assume he'll also be able to spell Jacoby Ellsbury in CF occasionally too?
Posted by: cmac1973 | December 17, 2008 at 11:34 AM
That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him sign with a team where he'll be guaranteed a starting job, or at least a chance to play a little more regularly than he would in Boston.
Posted by: cmac1973 | December 17, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Baldelli really needs to sign with a team that offers him as much playing time as his body can handle, provided his numbers warrent it. He needs to get out there and reestablish value.
If he signs with a team to be their 4th OF that might become what he's always thought of.
Oh he's good but every time he's had a starting job he gets hurt, as a 4th OF he's great.
I could see some team offering him a 2 to 3 million dollar base contract with incentives just to get him back out there. Always thought that he was a little over rated based on his numbers but he was a solid OF all the same.

groupid17: "i have lived in boston my whole life and abc has always been 5"
You must be young.
Posted by: Little Bear | December 17, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Like everyone else, i think this is great news for him.
Hes a good baseball player, maybe he can stay healthy next year.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 17, 2008 at 12:18 PM
What about Pittsburgh? Stay on the East Coast on a one year deal, move McLouth back to a corner spot?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 17, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Perfect fit for the White Sox *cough cough* git r dun
Posted by: astralpanda | December 17, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Assuming this second diagnosis isn't wrong, this is obviously great news for Rocco. Odd timing though - given his free agent status.
Posted by: midtown | December 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Really great news and now I believe since Topkin always has good Rays news. Good for Rocco.
I would love him to stay with the Rays but I am really just happy that he is not as sick as we all thought.
Posted by: RaysFan | December 17, 2008 at 01:08 PM
Dr. Weav's prognosis=a helluva a lot more money.
Great diagnosis for him on multiple fronts.
Posted by: bweav44 | December 17, 2008 at 01:10 PM
So what are the guesses as to what it'll take to sign this guy?
Posted by: davearm | December 17, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Cubs! He may be right handed but when he's healthy he is a top outfielder. Give him 2 years with a 3rd year team option.
Posted by: baseball52 | December 17, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Sure, let the Cubs have Rocco and the Rays can take Bradley. Sounds good to me.
