"The Rockies are apparently debating whether to sign Tim Redding or trade for Jason Marquis."
Wow. I guess I'd go with Redding, at least he'd be pretty cheap and wouldn't cost any prospects.

It wouldn't cost any prospects to get Marquis probably at the most it would cost the Rockies 6 million and probably more like 5. I'm sure the cubs would even throw in a lower level prospect.

That's still more than Redding presumably--he was only paid $1 mill last year. I don't see why in the world the Rockies would pick up Marquis instead of Redding, unless they just wanted to help end that drought on the north side of Chicago.
Posted by: mford | December 19, 2008 at 09:28 AM
it probably boils down to how much interest is there for Redding.
Also factor in there Redding probably wants a multi year deal, where with Marquis he is off the books after this year.
And i don't see the cubs tossing in a prospect to take him off our hands, that is not Hendry's style. Sure he will take crap in return depending on how much the Cubs have to eat of that contract, but he is not going to say here take Jason, a prospect and 5 million in cash for nothing in return. Now if you are saying the Rockies will upgrade thier prospect in return, then i could see it.

LET THE CROSBY SWEEPSTAKES BEGIN!!!

Redding wants a multi-year deal, but he probably won't get one.
The Rockies should not give up anything of value to get Marquis, regardless of the amount of salary eaten. Period.

"LET THE CROSBY SWEEPSTAKES BEGIN!!!"
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
I would love it if someone claimed him. Or if he clears, the A's eat most of the salary, and then the A's trade him for cheap trash.

Crosby has a good glove, but who the heck wants to pay a guy that has NEVER hit nearly 6 million when there is OC still available, Wilson probably available with Bucs picking up 1/3 of his salary and Lugo with Boston picking up 1/2??
Posted by: johns | December 19, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Rockies are better off with Paul Byrd than Marquis, regardless if the Cubs pay 2/3 of his salary even.
There is a reason that they hav been unable to unload him on anybody the last 2 years (Boston refused him for Crisp last winter) lack of talent and grossly over paid being the main reasons.

Actually, Crosby wasn't great with the glove last season. his range factor and RZR seem to indicate that he was close to average, and definitely not above average.
Considering his bat, I think it's safe to say that Bobby Crosby isn't an everyday shortstop, barring something wacky happening.

If the Rockies really want to add a pitcher, just sign Penny. At least Penny has had success in his career. Not sure if he actually healthy or not, but if he is, he will be a steal.

Lugo in Boston is a 4 letter word.
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 19, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Lugo is a four letter word in any city. L, U, G and O. Four letters.
And I think it depends on Redding's contract demands. If he wants a multiyear contract, then it may be better to go the one year route and trade for Marquis.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 19, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Isn't that a fact regarding Lugo and 4 letter words. When the Tigers won't even trade Willis and his horrible contract/self for him, Lugo must be pretty darn bad :-)

why don't the red sox dump lugo for crosby?
Posted by: slapshot10k | December 19, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Crosby wold have been a nice pick up for the O's had they not signed izturis. He still has some pop and at least played a whole season last year. Reminds me of Clint Barmes.

I just don't see why there is so much hate for Marquis. He's put up league average stats both years he's been with the Cubs. Is he overpaid? Grossly. But to talk as if he has no talent doesn't make sense to me. He's a #4/5 pitcher, yes. But most teams don't get an ERA+ of 100 out of their 4 or 5 slots. I'm amazed a playoff bound team wouldn't trade for him just to guarantee depth against injury if they didn't have to give up anyone and only had to pay $5M.

"why don't the red sox dump lugo for crosby?"
Uhh, because the A's wouldn't do that deal. Lugo sucks AND is owed more money than Crosby. AND is a longer term commitment. No deal.

Isn't Adam Dunn a perfect fit in Seattle? Dunn is a lefty power hitter, he contributes with solid OBP, and he would give Seattle the opportunity to put him at first base, especially if Jeff Clement stays behind the plate.
This would definitely be a good option for them if his price goes down, which I think it will sooner or later.
