It would not surprise me if the Washington ExReds took a Cincy player in the draft. Bowden heavily favors Reds players. Probably because the Reds have rocked and been one of the best teams in Baseball the past decade. LOL.

I think the Cubs need to pick a good-looking pitcher. That person will be traded away in the Peavy deal. I think this will determine if Peavy will be a Cub at the start of the season.

can you trade someone youve selected in the rule v draft without offering them back to their original club
Posted by: roguesaw | December 11, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Does anyone available today have the chance of being the next Josh Hamilton or Johan Santana? I know they all have the CHANCE, per se, but who are the players with the most real chance of big league stardom? I heard Theo say the Sox are more likely to target a pitcher than a position player since it's easier to stash them on the roster for the season. Anyone who might slip down to them?

I believe you can. Isn't that how the Reds ended up with Josh Hamilton a couple of years ago? He was picked by the Cubs in the Rule V draft, I believe, then traded to the Reds. It sounds like most of the deals are pre-arranged and have something to do with a team not taking a player who's left unprotected in exchange for getting the player they want for cheap.
Posted by: cmac1973 | December 11, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Why not all the teams get to pick? I only see 24 listed.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 11, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Good job on not trading Veal when he had some value, not protecting him from the Rule 5, and watching him go to a team within the division.
Almost as impressive as not getting Roberts because we didn't want to include Ceda and then trading him straight up for Kevin Gregg.

"The Pirates took Donald Veal from the Cubs."
Good pick for them. I think Veal has a shot to stick with the team as a lefty reliever. The Pirates are one of the few teams that can give him a legit shot.

A team can only participate if they have fewer than 40 players on your ML roster.
No roster space = no pick.

Anyone think there's a chance of Igawa getting taken?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 11, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Also, very surprised to see Corona go. I guess there's a longshot he sticks as a utility guy with them. I think there's a real chance Veal stays with Pittsburgh all year though.

Cubby i dont think so on Igawa because he wasnt drafted by the yanks but i could be wrong on this...
Posted by: Larsen101 | December 11, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Bdlugz, I hear you. I tried to forget all of that. My headache has returned.
Posted by: studio179 | December 11, 2008 at 11:21 AM
The Orioles took Lou Palmisano from the Brewers and made trade him to the Astros.
Orioles may trade him to the Astros?
or
Orioles made a trade for him to the Astros?

"Cubby i dont think so on Igawa because he wasnt drafted by the yanks but i could be wrong on this..."
He's eligible. I'm not sure what the technicalities are on foreign players, but he's eligible for the draft since he's not on the 40 man and I guess he has 4+ years of baseball servcie time. I'm assuming they count Japan as service time.

I was hopping the Tigers could sneak James Skelton through without getting claimed, Dang
Posted by: highVoltage | December 11, 2008 at 11:25 AM
If a player is selected in Rule5 and is traded, do the standard rule5 rules apply, like having to keep them on the 25 man roster all year.
Posted by: mkorpal | December 11, 2008 at 11:26 AM
mkorpal - yes that is the case. http://www.mlbfreeagents.net/rule5whatis.php gives you the breakdown.
Posted by: MLBFreeAgents.net | December 11, 2008 at 11:27 AM
Unless Arizona moves a catcher, they have no room for Skelton.
Posted by: RWS | December 11, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Mets took Darren O' Day....
Posted by: Hyro | December 11, 2008 at 11:29 AM
No way Veal has a chance to compete against the Indian flamethrowers.
Posted by: mmontice | December 11, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Wow, O'Day wasn't protected?
That's one that is a VERY solid pick.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Tim...
Double Yankees in the post about whoever the Mariners took.
Posted by: mr utley | December 11, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Yep, Igawa can be taken. Wouldn't be surprised if the Padres pick him up, since even Petco could give him a chance to be a contributor and his numbers at AAA weren't all bad.
Posted by: VAFriar | December 11, 2008 at 11:43 AM
CincyKid-Jim Bowden was gone in 2003, Terrell Young was drafted in 2004.
Posted by: thehoagster07 | December 11, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Tracker isn't working for me. :( Neither is the video, drat.
I heard Rocky Cherry to the Mets as well? That would be in the MLB (not AAA) portion right? I assume second round?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 11, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Donald Veal is so far away, it would be very hard to keep him all seasons.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 11, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I think Veal will be easy for the Pirates to keep all year he will be a reliever.
Posted by: BucSox | December 11, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Anyone with updates? BA seems to be having problems.

No way...Skelton is gone...??
Posted by: Rob M. | December 11, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Valido to the Orioles, Ryan Klosterman to the Marlins, Haerther to the Jays were a few names that caught my eye in the AAA portion. Klosterman was a pretty decent prospect a few years ago but has fallen apart. Perhaps going to a new organization can help him turn things around.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 11, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Darn it! The Mets got O'Day. I can't believe he wasn't protected. What's with those Mets getting people from our pen. lol
Posted by: AFROTC Cadet | December 11, 2008 at 12:38 PM
O'day torn his shoulder apart at the end of the season and refused to get surgery. Its going to be a long rehab. Dont believe me ask Kelvim Escobar.
Posted by: BK | December 11, 2008 at 12:47 PM
Why would a team pass their turn in the rule 5? Just for roster space or what? I don't really understand the draft and haven't read about it yet.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | December 11, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Thanks BK, totally forgot about that.
Posted by: AFROTC Cadet | December 11, 2008 at 12:55 PM
BOOM!
23. Mets - John Madden, rhp (Padres)
Posted by: El Hombre | December 11, 2008 at 01:12 PM
Don't understand the Sox passing on all of their turns. Thankfully we didn't lose anyone good at least.
Wouldn't it be fun if MacDougal had a nice comeback season. I don't see it, but hell, he keeps trying.

"Haerther to the Jays"
Saw that one coming a mile away. Not really, but it was just last year that the Jays claimed him on waivers, then the Cardinals took him right back when they tried to pass him through waivers. Should've just included him in the Rolen deal if they like him that much. Personally I think of all the clutter of outfielders in the Cards upper minors, Haerther is the most underrated, he just needs to get healthy and I think he's Reed Johnson from the left side.
Posted by: mateodh | December 11, 2008 at 01:12 PM
Looking at Haerther's stats, it doesn't look like we'll miss him much. Still, I liked him. He signed my favorite hat at a Memphis (or Springfield, I don't remember) game.
Posted by: El Hombre | December 11, 2008 at 01:14 PM
One of the best players taken was this kid Ivan Nova. Averaged 94 on the fastball all last year with goof offsped stuff. Problem is he woukld pitch one really good awesome game then 2 stinkers, then one awesome game and then a stinker.
Posted by: Casanova Wong | December 11, 2008 at 01:22 PM
I used to think he'd be an .800 OPS left fielder who would hit .300 consistently. Obviously disappointed but he could still be a good 4th OF for the Jays.
Posted by: mateodh | December 11, 2008 at 01:22 PM
I wonder is Donald Veal is going to stick around all year.
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 11, 2008 at 02:24 PM
if*
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 11, 2008 at 02:24 PM
I'm surprised at the Red Sox choosing Miguel Gonzales. I doubt he'll even break camp with them in April, never mind stick the whole year.
Posted by: Little Bear | December 11, 2008 at 02:25 PM
I'm borderline shocked the Cubs would leave Veal unprotected when they have 4 spots open on the 40 man roster and then trade for a righthanded reliever that will have to stay on the ML team the entire season or they return him? Who is he going to beat out for a roster spot? Wierd
Posted by: Banks1954 | December 11, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Perhaps David Patton is payback for Josh Hamilton...
LOL!
Posted by: Devlsh | December 11, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Giants took Luis Perdomo from the Cardinals. Perdomo was the reliever the Cards acquired in the Anthony Reyes to the Indians deal.
