« Odds and Ends: Renteria, Burnett, Delmon | Main | Jon Daniels - GM Trade History »
11:35pm: One more dose of Wilson rumors before we close up shop for the evening.
Dejan Kovacevic does not agree with Jackson's report. Kovacevic says the Dodgers and Pirates began a fresh round of talks for Wilson on Saturday. What's more, Wilson is open to renegotiating his contract to facilitate a trade to the Dodgers. The Dodgers might be willing to give Wilson $12MM over 2009-10.
Talks have been going on with the Tigers for over a month, and Detroit made a fresh offer Wednesday night that caught the Pirates' attention. The Bucs may have an eye on Tigers first base prospect Jeff Larish.
7:42pm: Tony Jackson at the Daily News says the Dodgers haven't talked to the Pirates in months, and "are NOT in pursuit of Jack Wilson." This directly contradicts today's report from the Associated Press.
5:02pm: MLB.com's Jason Beck is getting mixed signals on the chances of a Wilson-to-Detroit deal.
3:52pm: The AP has more on the Wilson trade talks. They say the Dodgers have been in extensive talks for Wilson this week, but want the Pirates to pick up "a substantial share of his salary." Meanwhile the Tigers would need the Bucs to absorb most of the contract. The report suggests the Tigers have moved on to free agent Adam Everett.
2:30pm: Jenifer Langosch talked to Wilson, who said he's open to revising his no-trade list. He doesn't seem likely to veto a trade. Meanwhile, Graziano still trusts his source.
12:41pm: Jon Paul Morosi's source says the Tigers' talks for Wilson have become "more active and meaningful" recently.
12:14pm: Dejan Kovacevic talked to Pirates president Frank Coonelly, who said Wilson has not been traded. The Tigers apparently made an interesting offer last night for Wilson, but the Dodgers remain in the mix. Wilson would have to approve a trade to the Tigers, and he and his agent haven't been informed of anything.
11:15am: According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Tigers acquired shortstop Jack Wilson from the Pirates today. We'll update the post as more info comes in.
Wilson, 31 later this month, hit .272/.312/.348 in 330 plate appearances this year while playing his typical excellent defense. He's set to earn $7.25MM in '09 and has an $8.4MM club option for '10 with a $600K buyout.

There are several stopgap free agent shortstops like Izturis and Eckstein who can be had without giving up young talent or overpaying salary on a guy like Wilson...

Jack Wilson may not be great, but any team wanting to contend would not be recommended to go with Izturis or Eckstein. At least Wilson is capable of a decent line of offense, Izturis is not, and Eckstein should not be playing SS full time anywhere at this point in his career.

Jack Wilson has one of the worst OBP's of any player in Major League Baseball...
Wilson batted 9th in National League lineups...
He is certainly not a better player/value than Izturis, Hu, or Eckstein.
The Dodgers will also have to cough up three young player to get Wilson...
Hu is $300,000 and already here.
Izturis would cost $2 or $3 million for one year...

I hope you get your wish. Its obvious you only follow offense and Jack Wilson missed alot last year. To compare Izturis with Wilson is comical. If he played for the Dodgers you would understand his value.

We understand his value, it lies SOLELY in defense. A defensive whiz with an anemic bat is an average player. You throw in the 7.5 million he's owed and the prospects it might take to land him and it turns Wilson into a costly average player.
Stop telling us that we don't understand Jack Wilson.
There is nothing to get about him.

Tim,
If Wilson is unloaded, could the Red Sox move some prospects to Pirates for Ryan Doumit. Maybe Lowrie, Bowden, and Bard?
i expected better from you cyyoung, thats just terrible. doumit is good but bard is 23 put up a 1.99 era at AA and can throw in upper 90s. bowden hits low 90s with good change and curve and is major league ready at age 22 if necessary. lowrie is in the majors at 24, and is about average maybe a little less than. Doumits an above average catcher with a great bat, but all of these guys have yet to enter their prime, and doumit is about to enter/ entering his prime. That idea is maybe one of the most ludacris things ive ever heard
