« Blue Jays Interested In Furcal | Main | Not Much Cooking For Red Sox »
8:31pm: MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says Mark Shapiro shook his head when the Tejada rumor was brought up. Maybe someone on the Astros' side floated all this rumored interest in the shortstop.
8:15pm: Twins assistant GM Rob Antony suggested with facial expressions and body language that they're not in on Tejada, according to Phil Miller.
7:00pm: Yahoo's Jeff Passan says the Indians have also discussed a Tejada trade with the Astros. The Indians' interest depends on how much they spend on a closer.
As for the Twins...LEN3 says, "Miguel Tejada is NOT an option."
6:57pm: MLB.com's Alyson Footer says the Twins expressed interest in Tejada. The Astros would like to get one of the Twins' young starters, and would be willing to eat salary.
Footer adds that interest in Ty Wigginton is "abundant," with the Twins again a possible match. She nixes the idea of the 'Stros acquiring Ramon Hernandez from Baltimore.
4:10pm: According to Phil Miller of the St. Paul Pioneer Press:
Can’t vouch for its veracity – not sure I really believe it myself -- but I just heard in the gossip scrum that is forming at the edge of the Bellagio lobby that there was at least a phone call between the Astros and Twins regarding Miguel Tejada, the long-ago MVP shortstop.
Coming from a "gossip scrum," it's hard to know what to make of it. But, Miller felt it was worthy of publishing.

As a salary dump, why not?
Giving up anything of value, no.

Does Tejada know how old he is yet?

Who do the Twins have in the minors as far as SS/3B go?
Posted by: Brian | December 08, 2008 at 04:13 PM
I love Tejada and would miss him, but I wouldn't mind seeing him leave if we get anything good back in return. I would not take this rumor with a grain of salt because I wouldn't want him playing on turf as old as he is. I think it would be a good pickup for the twins personally

"Does Tejada know how old he is yet?"
Assume it's somewhere between 30 and 50.

No.
No.
No.
Please, God, No.

He is an up grade over AE and Lamb, and did ok defensively, BUT people tend not take on account that he had a lot of stuff on his plate last yr.. More then likely Tejada will do better with out all that crap on his plate and he will be in a contract yr.... And hits the bosox/yanks pretty well too.
Posted by: elcaballofan08/09 | December 08, 2008 at 04:21 PM
unless the astros just give him to the twins, absolutely not.
Posted by: Jon Elliot | December 08, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Wow...the Twins seem to be making a habbit out of picking up the Astros' left infield scraps. That'd be awesome if they traded for Tejada and Wiggington. Afterall, that Everett/Lamb combo worked so well.

If it didnt mean any current player like a SP or Denard or Delmon, i say get it done. But thats wishful thinking.
Posted by: migoli | December 08, 2008 at 04:22 PM
This might be the most un-Twins-like move you can think of.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 04:24 PM
i think its safe to say the orioles won that miguel tejada trade...

3B Prospect Danny Valencia is currently ranked 5th among Twins prospects, according to Baseball America. He'll be 24 and likely to start the year either in AA or AAA after a decent 2008. 24 and still in AA borders on being too old, though. Valencia finished the year with .311, 75 R, 37 2B, 5 3B, 15 HR, 76 RBI, 4 SB in 7 attempts, and a blah 45/113 walk-to-strikeout rate. He amassed an .819 OPS in 266 AA at-bats after the .920 in A+ to start the year. Not bad.
Matt Tolbert can play either 3B or SS, but he is clearly for defensive value, not offensive talent.
Yancarlos Ortiz, also according to Baseball America, has the best infield arm of any Twins prospect. He's a 23-year-old shortstop who played his entire 2008 season in A+, putting up a .251 average and .600 OPS. Outside of pedestrian speed, he's more a defensive option with little or no offensive contribution.
So I can definitely understand why the Twins are looking into third and short, but can't they do better than Tejada? Seriously?

This has to be the joke of the meetings so far.
Posted by: kinsler5 | December 08, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Depends on how much money the Astros will be willing to kick in, but I don't see Tejada's value being all that much. Boof and a mid level prospect?
Posted by: MNRunLeft | December 08, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Valencia smashes the ball... I love that both the players the Orioles traded last season Bedard and Tejada may not stick with the teams they were trade to... The Orioles won both of those deals..
Posted by: fearthechant | December 08, 2008 at 04:43 PM
I really don't see why this would be a crazy deal if the Astros picked up salary. The Twins need a 3B if Blake stays in LA, and Tejada needs to move there soon. Perhaps they could find a stopgap 3B and keep Tejada at SS for another year or so, but not really sure why a lot of people are surprised at this matchup.

I don't give up Boof. Or anything of value.
Just take on all of Tejada's salary, and send nothing in return.

Wiggington seems to be a good fit for the Twinkies. As long as he is not played every day for over a week and given rest breaks, he can be an invaluable player, sure his range at 3rd isn't exactly great, nor are his hands outstanding either, but he could probably be had for a decent price and fill a hole the twins have had for years.

"Twins assistant GM Rob Antony suggested with facial expressions and body language that they're not in on Tejada, according to Phil Miller."
THIS is the best piece of reporting so far. Usually reporters are twisting words, or trying to finding stories out of nothing. But now we have rumors and stories based on facial expressions!!!
I Love this time of year!!!

I envision Drayton McClain, sitting outside the hotel in Vegas with a cup in his hand that has Miggy's picture on it, jangling a couple of pennies and mumbling to everyone who goes in, "Hey brother, can you spare any prospects? C'mon, help a brother out."
