« Yankees Sign Jason Johnson, DFA Duncan | Main | Marquis To Rockies Deal Finalized »
2:21pm: Crasnick says the Indians signed Pavano to a one-year deal. He gets $1.5MM guaranteed plus another $5.3MM in possible incentives, according to Troy Renck. Anthony Castrovince says Michael Aubrey was designated for assignment to make room.
12:40pm: MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says Pavano "has also been weighing a possible return to the Marlins," but the Indians are the "clear frontrunner."
12:30pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says the Indians "have emerged as a strong candidate" to sign Pavano. He may seek a contract similar to Hampton's.
11:03am: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Indians are in serious discussions with free agent starter Carl Pavano. Pavano will visit Cleveland soon and a deal could be wrapped up quickly. We'll have to see if Pavano can come close to the $2MM guaranteed Mike Hampton received from the Astros.

Oh man.
Glad to hear that Carmona, Laffey, Sowers, Reyes, etc. will all get mentoring from the great Carl Pavano.
It's too bad that their lineup is so interesting, because they could be pretty good if their pitching pans out.
Posted by: scribbletone | January 06, 2009 at 11:06 AM
Good low risk signing.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | January 06, 2009 at 11:09 AM
It's only logical that Pavano wins 18 games next year. Just because.
Posted by: jnr98 | January 06, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Remember when the white man traded the Indians $24-worth of beads and mirrors for the isle of Manhattan, NY?
Well they're at it again. The Yankees get Sabathia, who started last season in Cleveland. The Indians get Pavano, who spent 4 years on the DL in New York.
I know the analogy isn't perfect, but it's interesting to me. If I were the Indians I'd only guarantee $24 of Pavano's contract, based on how he lived up to his last contract.
Posted by: Boh | January 06, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Pavano is a waste of space.
Posted by: The Globalizer | January 06, 2009 at 11:13 AM
God Speed, Cleveland!
Posted by: ImAwesome | January 06, 2009 at 11:13 AM
Prediction: Pavano lands on the 60 day DL one week into spring training with a torn vagina.
Posted by: jlemoine | January 06, 2009 at 11:16 AM
he should have to pay to play baseball.. remember those days?
Posted by: ImAwesome | January 06, 2009 at 11:18 AM
I live in Cleveland and I'm telling everyone right now, if Carl Anthony Pavano signs with the Indians and has anywhere near a productive year I will go GRASSY KNOLL on his ass. I'm talking "back and to the left"!!! jk
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | January 06, 2009 at 11:23 AM
No after contract is signed, he hurts his chest muscules, from laughing out loud so hard that someone is actually signing him.
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 06, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Maybe by serious they meant:
"Carl Pavano on line 1 for you Mr. Shapiro"
"Heh heh - good one. Probably Ozzie just screwing with me again"
"No, it's really him"
"Seriously?"
Posted by: jhawk90 | January 06, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Good sign - I'm a Yankees fan and I said the Yankees should resign him for close to nothing before he even came back last year. He's had surgery, his arm should be fine now. If he beats the Yankees even once this year I'll be pissed
Posted by: Joe | January 06, 2009 at 11:28 AM
The streak of Cleveland Indians Cy Youngs will continue:
'07 CC Sabathia
'08 Cliff Lee
'09 Carl Pavano
... no questions about it.
Posted by: GoTribe | January 06, 2009 at 11:34 AM
Ditto to what Joe said (except for signing him ... no room on roster)
Posted by: rossdfarian | January 06, 2009 at 11:35 AM
If they give him a Hampton deal, then it should be okay.
Where are they planning on playing DeRosa?
Who plays 3B for the Tribe?
Posted by: FyreKnight | January 06, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Haha...vagina.
Posted by: ellisburksrocks | January 06, 2009 at 12:17 PM
derosa will play third. solid pickup for the tribe if this goes through
Posted by: thenextgm08 | January 06, 2009 at 12:25 PM
ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL.
Sign Byrd, right this second. I will FREAK OUT if we sign Pavano!
Posted by: Blue Rauchmann | January 06, 2009 at 12:27 PM
NOT GOOD
Posted by: rockford | January 06, 2009 at 12:31 PM
The best thing ever associated with Pavano was the trade from the Red Sox to the Expos for Pedro Martinez. Man the 'Spos got fleeced! Good luck Indians if you sign him. I hope he wins every game against the Yankees he pitches this year.
Posted by: ellisburksrocks | January 06, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Why in the world would the Tribe take a chance on Pavano, when PAUL BYRD is out there? Byrd will sign a cheap one or two year deal, he fits in with the team, and he'll be a solid #4 starter, winning 10+ games.
Don't mess up, Shapiro! Sign Byrd! Koo koOoOoOoOoO!
Posted by: Krambo42 | January 06, 2009 at 12:42 PM
yes indians, please sign byrd, give the red sox some compensation!
Posted by: 04Forever | January 06, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Derosa will actually most likely play 2B, Asdrubal Cabrera to SS and Peralta to 3B from what Ive heard.
Posted by: Don Thomsen | January 06, 2009 at 12:51 PM
"yes indians, please sign byrd, give the red sox some compensation!"
Indians don't give up a draft pick to sign Byrd --- type B.
Sox get one though.

"It's only logical that Pavano wins 18 games next year. Just because.
Posted by: jnr98"
I'm not sure there has been a safer bet in the history of gambling, that is absolutely going to happen. 200 innings of solid stuff.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | January 06, 2009 at 01:03 PM
don thomsen- actually the reports are DeRosa is moving to 3B, Peralta stays at SS, Cabrera at 2B.
and knowing how the world works, pavano will throw 200innings and win 15 games next year.
Posted by: Zack | January 06, 2009 at 01:06 PM
"Both Mark Shapiro and Eric Wedge confirm that DeRosa is moving to third base, though he has the versatility to help out elsewhere, if need be."
Posted by: Zack | January 06, 2009 at 01:08 PM
Could just be that they want to talk to Peralta personally; shortstops and CFs seem to be super territorial. Wasn't it reported that he was working at 3B in winter ball?
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | January 06, 2009 at 01:16 PM
Not many 'good, low risk signing' posts so far. Anyway, the Tribe will be fine.
Posted by: studio179 | January 06, 2009 at 01:22 PM
Dont mind this move at all. What the hell, he was good at one point. And at least he has a chance in hell of striking someone out unlike byrd. I dont want to see anymore of those meatballs coming down the strike zone.
Posted by: cle'land | January 06, 2009 at 01:26 PM
I was hoping the Indians would make a run at Ben Sheets since he could be had fairly cheap. However, this move is low risk and high reward and if Pavano gets hurt it will cost a lot less than if we signed Sheets and he got hurt.
Posted by: Alex Trebek | January 06, 2009 at 01:28 PM
Pavano's only had one good season ever, and it already got him $55 million from the Yankees.
I'm not a fan of the move if it's a guaranteed major league deal. With his history, he should get a minor league deal, and even then I'd rather take my chances with Scott Lewis.
Even if Pavano has any success, he's not going to be a difference-maker. The Indians should be poised to hang with the Twins in the Central, and Pavano doesn't make me think they're any more likely to win it, they're just going to have to DFA Sowers so they can have Pavano on the opening day roster.

pavano signing aside
the indians look good going into the 09 season
Posted by: gunsnascar | January 06, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Why do the Tribe look good?
Hafner is broken down, V-Mart was terrible last year, Jhonny likely had a career year, Betancourt bottomed out. I don't see it.
Posted by: Stinky | January 06, 2009 at 01:55 PM
Its not actually a bad move, it's a solid buy low.
There are just a lot of people who seek to dislike Pavano.
Posted by: scribbletone | January 06, 2009 at 02:01 PM
Pavano is a good sign low pitcher. The Indians have stated that they have very little money, with committing to Wood and DeRosa, so a Sheets or even a Byrd is out of the question.
Oh, and Stinky. That team with a broken down Hafner and terrible Martinez still won 81 games. And Peralta's season was about average. Add in good things from Choo, Shoppach, and Cabrera in the 2nd half last year and good things look to be on the horizon.
Posted by: grimace455 | January 06, 2009 at 02:05 PM
Good luck with Pavano. You'll be lucky to get 10 starts outta him.
Posted by: Agent | January 06, 2009 at 02:29 PM
If he stays healthy he is a good pitcher.
That's is a big if
Posted by: mynameborat | January 06, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Signing is official.
Conference call at 3:45-
*WTAM 1100
Posted by: Dan Cowgill | January 06, 2009 at 02:32 PM
I think this is a good move, low risk and possibly a high reward.
@Stinky - The Indians had one of the best records after the break last year, that was without Sabathia, Hafner, or Vmart.
Posted by: Babrook | January 06, 2009 at 02:38 PM
"Signing is official.

Did Art Bell make the announcement? LOL
Posted by: Svengoolie | January 06, 2009 at 02:41 PM
how is these a good signing?
he hasnt pitched quality inning since he was a marlin.
but the best of luck to him, NY kill him.
BTW
he takes the higher contract twice over the marlins, the last time it didnt work
deja vu
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 06, 2009 at 02:48 PM
Pavano is another example of "only in America"
Only in America can you suck and be injured for so long and still get signed
Posted by: 04Forever | January 06, 2009 at 03:03 PM
i actually like this signing...only 1.5 mill guarenteed, but if he has that awesome rebound year everyone is hoping for just cause he would be doing it not as a yank than he is only worth 6.8 thats not too bad imo
Posted by: Mikey | January 06, 2009 at 03:07 PM
If Tribe have that kind of money (1.5M) "they" should have gave it to the local Boys Clubs. It would have been a better return. MY GOD - If GM worked for me and told about this signing, he'd be fired in two seconds. No, again one second.
Posted by: rockford | January 06, 2009 at 03:08 PM
Stinky,
here is why the Indians look good:
Hafner hurt the team last year, Martinez was no help at all, Betancourt had the worst year of his career, they had no 2B most of the year, Choo played half a season, Marte was Cleveland's 3B in the second half, they had no closer. Yet, they still won 81 games and had one of the best records in the second half.
Heading into 2009 here is where they are improving:
It doens't matter who plays first base, Martinez/Garko/LaPorta, it is solid any way you look at it. second base, Cabrera is going to spend the whole season there. third base, DeRosa is a huge, huge improvenment over Marte. leftfield, Francisco/LaPorta, again it looks solid any way you look at it. right field, Choo for the whole year. bullpen is greatly improved with additions of wood, smith, and now perez and lewis being able to set up games instead of bouncing around from closer to set up role.
if you don't see improvement on that roster heading into 2009 then you don't know baseball at all. last years team won 81 games, and I strongly believe that additions of wood, derosa, smith, healthy martinez and a full year of choo can improve the team by 10 games. add 10 to 81, that gives you 91 wins. i don't see anyone else in the central winning 88 games, let alone 91.
Posted by: ilulic | January 06, 2009 at 03:16 PM
Is it just me or would a trade of Swisher for DeRosa have made more sense for both the Cubs and Sox?
Posted by: Svengoolie | January 06, 2009 at 03:24 PM
Wasn't Michael Aubery once a highly touted prospect? that could be an interesting pick-up...
Posted by: insomniac | January 06, 2009 at 03:37 PM
Sorry, forgot that this is an Indians board. My bad.
Good luck in '09, if you stay healthy you should be right there in Sept.
Posted by: Svengoolie | January 06, 2009 at 03:40 PM
"Wasn't Michael Aubery once a highly touted prospect? that could be an interesting pick-up..."
From everything that I've seen from Aubrey he was probably the most likely candidate to be released. If all the stars of the universe align he could be a poor mans Nick Johnson.

"Why do the Tribe look good?

Just the kind of post I would expect from someone named Stinky.
Hafner is the only real point you have. V-Mart was not "terrible" he was playing with bone chips in his arm the entire first half of the season. The doctors were amazed he was even playing when they removed them.
How can you say Peralta likely had a "career year"? He was 26 years old!!! Ever hear of developing? I mean come on, you're talking like he's 35 and out of his prime. He's just entering his prime.
This team had no real identity last season switching pieces out left and right at nearly every position. Now you add a solid closer (Wood), an everyday 3rd baseman that doesnt hit .150 (DeRosa), another bullpen arm (Smith), and a good infield prospect (Valbuena) to go along with the addition of Miller in the pen, LaPorta, and guys like Huff, Lewis, and Reyes for the rotation... Oh and btw we are adding all these people to a team who was only 1 game away from the World Series two years ago and despite being decimated with injuries last season still won 81 games and had one of the best offenses in the second half of the season with their biggest hitters not playing.
Yeah I don't get it either.
Posted by: the lowercase zach is better | January 06, 2009 at 03:54 PM
I guarantee he'll pitch descent this year to get a better contract. I bet he wont get injured either.
Posted by: yankfan1 | January 06, 2009 at 04:00 PM
Aubrey actually is still a decent prospect. He's always hurt (5 years and only 340 games) but produces when on the field (841 OPS, .290 bavg, 1:26 hr/per at bats). Would probably make a decent platoon player in the majors.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | January 06, 2009 at 04:40 PM
good comment lowercase zach...I like the signing, the Tribe had to sign someone like Pavano with their limited resources left. The only thing I dont like is that Pavano has been referred to as a bad teammate. If he shows maturity this could be ok.
Posted by: Furrski | January 06, 2009 at 04:46 PM
Well rested - he still sucks
Posted by: rockford | January 06, 2009 at 04:48 PM
Aubrey will be 27 y.o. in April. Has an injury history. Hits for average but has very little power for a 1B. He may very well get claimed off waivers but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Columbus soon.
Posted by: MickS | January 06, 2009 at 05:11 PM
Indians roster is set. I like every move Shapiro has made so far.
If no injuries occur in spring training, here is what the roster comes out to:
Rotation:
1. Cliff Lee LHP
2. Fausto Carmona RHP
3. Carl Pavano RHP
4. Aaron Laffey LHP
5. Anthony Reyes RHP
--
6. David Huff LHP
7. Jake Westbrook RHP (Out until mid season)
8. Jeremy Sowers LHP
9. Scott Lewis LHP
10. Zach Jackson LHP
Bullpen:
CL Kerry Wood RHP
SU Rafael Perez LHP
SU Jensen Lewis RHP
MR Joe Smith RHP
MR Rafael Betancourt RHP
MR Masa Kobayashi RHP
MR John Meloan RHP
--
MR Adam Miller RHP
MR Edward Mujica RHP
Lineup:
1. Grady Sizemore CF L
2. Mark DeRosa 3B R
3. Shin Soo-Choo RF L
4. Victor Martinez C S
5. Jhonny Peralta SS R
6. Ryan Garko 1B R
7. Travis Hafner DH L
8. Ben Francisco LF R
9. Asdrubal Cabrera 2B S
Bench:
C Kelly Shoppach R
INF Jamey Carroll R
INF Josh Barfield R
OF David Dellucci L
Prospects:
1B/OF Matt LaPorta
INF Beau Mills
C Carlos Santana
C Chris Gimenez
OF Trever Crowe
OF Michael Brantley
INC Luis Velbuena
Looking at other AL Central teams, I don't think any team will run away with the division simply because every team is competitive, including the Royals. However, I don't see any other Central team looking as good as the Cleveland Indians do on paper. Then again, that's why they play the games, anything can change. But I have a really good feeling about the 2009 Cleveland Indians.
For those wondering about Michael Aubrey, he was a first round draft pick of the Indians and was a top first base prospect but has been hurt most of his minor league career. It only made sense to designate him since Indians have Garko, Martinez, LaPorta, Hafner, Brown, Mills, and even Carlos Santana that could play first base. I'm sure someone will claim him off waivers, if not, he will be back in the Cleveland system.

I thought Kruk ate this guy years ago.
Posted by: Umair | January 06, 2009 at 06:53 PM
ilulic,
you missed a place where the tribe will improve; sizemore. he is only going to get better next year. i'm going to say that he gets near 40 hr, 100+ rbi, and gets near 40 steals. the only thing i can say is that he could work on ba. but with production like that, i would still take it.
Posted by: azn | January 06, 2009 at 07:25 PM
Pavano ?? He got signed before Perez, Lowe ,etc.
What are the Indians thinking - $1 million for a man who pitched 20 times in 4 years for the Yankees...and when he did pitched he wasnt all that good. What a really bizarre signing. I hope he stays healthy to pitch against the Yanks and the knock the crap out of him
Posted by: TripleHHH | January 06, 2009 at 09:36 PM
Hey TripleHHH (wouldn't that be like 9 H's?)- If you knew anything you would know that a pitcher who had even one really good year and could just possibly make your team better, he'll at least get a mill. come on.
PS
Yankees still suck!
Posted by: Furrski | January 06, 2009 at 10:13 PM
it is clear that TripleHHH has no baseball knowledge.
There is a perfect reason to why Cleveland signed pavano over perez, lowe, sheets, and so on. obviously, you have no clue to what that reason is. sucks to be you.
Posted by: ilulic | January 07, 2009 at 12:35 AM
azn, i agree with you. sizemore is just 26 years old and isn't even in his prime yet. he is still getting better but i wanted to point out the obvious reasons to why the indians should be able to win 90+ games without a problem.
realisticly, lee is not going to repeat but should be able to win 18 games for the third time in his career. carmona is going to only improve on 2008, he is capable of winning at least 15 if not 18+ games again. i personally think that reyes was a complete steal. i've watched the guy ever since he came up and i think he really needed a change of scenery. coming to cleveland and being the 5th starter and based on what he showed last year with the limited time in cleveland, i think he will be at least a 10 game winner. laffey concerns me, he has a lot of potential but he is streaky. he is capable of 10 wins with an era around 4.50, however.
i am really looking forward to watching choo get 500 plus AB's. he is a run producer and is an outstanding right fielder. .290/25/100 from him with 500+ at bats? also i'd like to see reyes throw 180 innings.
i'm excited to get this season going. CAN'T WAIT.
Posted by: ilulic | January 07, 2009 at 12:41 AM
Saw a few things on here that I thought I could help out with:
- Sowers, Laffey, Jackson and Lewis all have options left. The signing of Pavano will not cause the Tribe to lose any one of those guys.
- From what we've heard from the Tribe so far, DeRosa will be playing third. That could easily change.. Peralta was playing 3rd in Winter Ball incase that Indians signed a middle infielder instead of a third baseman (Hudson, Furcal, etc.). Peralta could/should make the switch but we'll see.
Posted by: GoTribe | January 07, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Sign a LH RP, a back-end SP, and another project SP and they look really good, though I don't know if they have the money. Can they afford say Braden Looper, Jason Jennings, and Will Ohman? I doubt it, but that would be pretty sweet. On paper, at least.
