According to Wayne Craczyk of the Japan Times, Kenshin Kawakami has narrowed his options to three teams: the Orioles, Cardinals, and Twins.
Kawakami probably makes the most sense for the Cardinals out of those three. Baltimore isn't near contention and the Twins already have a nice starting rotation. However, signing Kawakami could allow them to feel more comfortable about trading a young starter.

any idea on why the braves got ruled out considering their rich pitching history?

If the Twins do sign Kawakami, plan on seeing one of Perkins or Blackburn in either Seattle or Milwaukee next season.

Japanese players are always way overhyped.

I would really like this signing for the Twins. It would give them an older/veteran type pitcher that we lack. Also, the signing of him would mean we'd probably trade Blackburn/Perkins. A trade of Blackburn/Perkins and Delmon Young would bring in A LOT.

The Cardinals need to get this guy!!! They need one more solid starter to round up the rotation, and then they will contend. This guy is a stud and he is young enough for Mozeliak to be comfortable in making a long term offer. Just what the doctor ordered....

"he is young enough for Mozeliak to be comfortable in making a long term offer"

33 years old isn't exactly what I'd call young.

One more pitcher is not what the cardinals need to contend... im so sick of hearing cardinal fans change their mind and say they only need this or they only need that to contend... you are going to be in the bottom AGAIN deal with it... trade rick ankiel, ludiwck, and get out from under those huge terrible contracts for the simulated game squad sign a big name and then you will contend... give it 2 or 3 years and the cards will be back on top of that division... the cubs only have a 2-3 year window with the current team... and the other teams in that division are garbage...

I tell you what, i just watched this guy on youtube.. he has some pretty nasty stuff. He may be even better than Dice K. C'mon John Mozeliak

I think you may be wrong about the cards this year BlueCatuli, carp is closing.. and the rotation is going to be very solid. there are some bats to still be heard in the lineup too. and a theres this guy named albert pujols, i dunno if you've seen him play.. he's pretty good.

im personally as a Braves fan happy we didnt get him. He is not an ace nor would he give us more than 150 IP
hes not what we need. yes we need pitchers but we need an ace and someone who can go 200+ innings

AndrewBeavs: Carpenter will not be closing; don't let this article fool you. Tony has stated that he will think about using Carpenter as a closer if it is what's best for Carpenter, and if it is whats best for the team. Right now Carpenter still has to recover to the point to where he can be successful in any major league role, and then Tony can put him in as the 9th inning guy.
Expect a competition in Spring Training where Perez, Motte, Kinney, Franklin, and some more young players battle it out for the role.
Oh, and the Cards rotation isn't "solid". It has 3 good pitchers in Wainwright (the Ace), Lohse, and Wellemeyer. I would like to say Carpenter can come back and provide a good 150 innings, and Kawakami would provide 12-14 wins...but those are two major ifs. IF, and once again IF, Carpenter can regain anything and contribute and Kawakami is league average, the Cards could then have a decent to above average pitching staff.
Right now Wainwright is the only stud pitcher and Lohse is a good #2 or 3.

BlueCatuli is indeed wrong, but there's no way Carpenter should close. They need him in the rotation. If he's going to be healthy enough to pitch, he needs to be healthy enough to start.
If the Cards add Kawakami, they'll be in real good shape.
How do you get off even saying they'd "be at the bottom again," Cantuli? They were 10 games over .500 last year, and that was with Pujols out for awhile and Carpenter down for the majority of the season. Plus they've added Greene, a good glove with a lot of rebound potential on the offensive side of things.
If they have a healthy Carpenter AND they add Kawakami, they'll be in good shape.
The Cubs are good... very good. But they're never as good as most of their fans make them out to be. Then again, no team really is.
I hope the Cards don't sign him; I'd love to see him on the Twins. But if he goes to Saint Louis, the Cubs need to watch out.

Blue...
who else in the central is going to compete with the cubs? The Cardinals will be no where near the bottom. The Astros have no pitching behind Oswalt and the brewers have no pitching at all.

This signing would be awesome for the Twins. Good for them for trying to make a splash. With this signing, you could move Blackburn/Perkins into the set-up role and there's your search for a reliever. Can I just say Twins777: Whats with all the trade talk with Delmon? Hes 22 with great average and power potential. Also he has a great arm, and its not like he can't run at all either. After one mediocre season, people are telling him to pack his bags, when he has many seasons ahead of him. After this possible signing of Kawakami, I'd be up for trading one of the starters, but I do not see trading Delmon as the answer.

The Twins better not sign this guy, their rotation is already set. i dont understand why they would do it. japanese players usually never do anything so if we would get this guy and trade a young pitcher it would be totally pointless
Posted by: Meyer15 | January 04, 2009 at 07:45 PM
Wow I see we have a bit of a mixup here.
Posted by: twinsfan | January 04, 2009 at 08:38 PM
I would absolutely love it if the Twins signed him. It would be (by far) the most exciting thing they have done in the offseason, and it would certainly be a precursor to another move.
Get it done.

"The Twins better not sign this guy, their rotation is already set."
Perkins is a mediocre #5 starter who they can ditch and replace without missing a beat. Blackburn isn't much better.
"i dont understand why they would do it. japanese players usually never do anything so if we would get this guy and trade a young pitcher it would be totally pointless"
Japanese players never do anything?
Ichiro, Matsuzaka, Hideki Matsui, Takashi Saito, Hideki Okajima, Hideo Nomo, Akinora Iwamura, Kaz Matsui, Hiroki Kuroda, Tadahito Iguchi... all have shown success in the Major Leagues. Kenji Johjima was good his first two years as well.
Just because Fukudome and Kei Igawa were busts doesn't mean that Japanese players can't handle MLB.

I would love to see him in a redbird jersey next season
Posted by: WayneStorie | January 05, 2009 at 02:34 AM
The Cardinals has a well below average run differential last year...and there is no way I see Lohse and Wellemeyer doing anything but regressing. Carp in the pen will help if he is healthy, but thats a big if. If they don't sign an impact player, they aren't competing. That middle infield is just awful...

Blue- Wow. I dont think I've seen anything so stupid in my entire life. You are truly a moron. The cardinals were not at the bottom ever this decade. Ankiel is going to go just over 1M this season in arbitration and Ludwick is still gunna be at the min, so what huge contracts are you referring to. With carpenter closing, the cardinals need another starter in there behind wainwright and lohse. So. I suggest you do some research before you open your mouth next time.
