« Padres Sign 29 Pre-Arb Players | Main | Odds and Ends »
According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, the Mets have agreed to terms with left-handed reliever Ron Villone on a minor league contract. Apparently the Scott Boras Corp. can still get things done in the midst of the Manny negotiations.
Villone, 39, posted a 4.68 ERA over 50 innings last season with the Cardinals. He's likely to join the Mets' spring training camp once he passes a physical.

Mets made this signing

This lefty-reliever swap game is hilarious. Eric O'Flaherty goes from Seattle to Atlanta, Royce Ring goes from Atlanta to St. Louis, and Tyler Johnson goes from St. Louis to Seattle. Scenarios like this happen all the time in the lefty reliever market.

Doesnt hurt, but have to wonder why wouldnt they give 1m to Ohman, Reyes or Beimel instead

Oh for god's sakes, just sign Ohman already...

they signed Villone and not one of the other three because he accepted a minor league deal. If you look at the mets bullpen they cannot afford to gaurentee the second lefty spot in the bullpen.
Rodriguez
Putz
Green
Sanchez
Stokes
Feliciano
Redding

The reason that the Mets have not and probably will not sign Ohman is not because of the money. It is because they don't want to guarantee him a spot on their 25 man roster.
Villone held lefties to a .176 batting average last season. He is on a minor league contract, and that is why they signed him.

maristmetsfan: Redding is not a reliever.
This is nice and all except Villone should only be used against lefties. And they already have Feliciano for that.
Ohman is better than Stokes, Feliciano, and Sanchez. Plus, he can pitch to righties.
He's a bargain it at 1-2 million.

strikethree - im pretty sure in maristmetsfan's mind, he has given either livan, garcia, or neise the fifth spot in the rotation, therefore redding would be the long man - the long man is in the bullpen

If Villone makes the team, the bullpen does look really good.
K-Rod
JJ Putz
Pedro Feliciano
Duaner Sanchez
Sean Green
Ron Villone
Tim Redding/Brian Stokes

Correction: It COULD look really good. It all depends on how Duaner Sanchez and Pedro Feliciano pitch. If they return to say 06 form when they were members of a rather strong bullpen, then yes, the bullpen looks VERY good. That is, if they can stay healthy which is always an issue.

thank you wright is my boy, thats obviously what i was thinking. I hate the redding signing and i hope we can just hide him in the long reliever role this season.

Kenny what was the whole point of that?

"Ohman is better than Stokes, Feliciano, and Sanchez. Plus, he can pitch to righties."
Not really, he had one season of success against righties, that looks like an aberration. Ohman is a league average reliever, and that is why nobody wants to pay him money and guarantee him a spot in this market. He just isn't very good, and most teams probably look at his 08 and think fluke, when he has never been any good before that. I wouldn't mind if Ohman was brought in, but I can hardly say I "want" him here.
