SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up...
- The Mets apparently had interest last winter in signing David Eckstein as a backup for $1-2MM, but he preferred to take $850K to start at second base for the Padres.
- Heyman looks at the Jake Peavy situation. He learned that new CEO Jeff Moorad "didn't believe the economic downturn and slumping late-winter market would inhibit suitors for Peavy, who has $63 million and four years left on his contract." That said, we know Moorad is willing to keep Peavy this year. And Peavy may be happiest in San Diego, according to Heyman.
- Pedro Martinez has fielded calls from several teams since the season began. Heyman speculates on the Dodgers, Indians, Phillies, Brewers, Pirates, D'Backs, and Mets as possibilities. And what about the Cardinals, who just lost Chris Carpenter for a while?
Why would the Rangers not give him 5 million? They could certainly use him.

Regarding Eckstein: him taking a pay-cut to play every day just shows you that for some players, it isn't all about the money. Whata’ guy - bravo. And it takes a lot for me to say that, considering I hated the squirrelly little jerk when he played for the Cardinals.
As far as Pedro: Originally, I wasn't thrilled about the prospect of him playing for the Astros. But after seeing the "performances" the current staff has put out...for God's sake Ed Wade, please make this happen. Hell, sign Nick Swisher; he's shown to be more effective than half of our current staff.

For what it's worth, fangraphs had Pedro worth 5 million for the 28 innings he pitched in 2007. Last year was horrible, but there are definitely reasons that we can expect a bounce back. I also think all of the talk that Pedro is too fragile and he can't handle a full season are unwarranted. Remember, he had a partially torn rotator cuff since his Boston days. Had he not tried to pitch through that injury for almost 3 years, and had it fixed originally, a lot of these other, smaller, compensatory type of injuries may have not cropped up. It is still unimaginable to me that the Mets have Livan Hernandez as their 5th starter when Pedro is sitting out there unsigned.

I'm not sure how expensive it is to live, even part time, in San Diego these days, but 850k there may be pretty close to 1 million in NY.

Cardinals won't sign Pedro, they'll use starters from AAA to take Carp's spot in the rotation.

Ed Wade would be better off trying to get back Shawn Chacon than sign Pedro. Not that he'll try to do either.

the angels should sign him

I think Eckstein is a great player and should asked for at least a million from the Pads
Nationals could shure use a pitcher who might actually win
(Pedro)

nrmx88, I could not agree more. For all of the supposed rotation depth we added this offseason, Nelson Figueroa is our back up option and Livan is our 5, though so far so good for Livan. While Pedro is just sitting there waiting to sign. It's unimaginable to me that Minaya hasn't gotten serious in negotiating with Pedro. I think Pedro would be good for 15-20 starts this year and have very good numbers. He looked good in the WBC, the velocity was back in the 90s consistently. I would love to see Pedro come back for one more year.
