| Why Are So Many Pitchers Still Unsigned? »

Newsday's Ken Davidoff runs through six current free agents, digging up new information about a few.
- Paul Byrd never received a call from the Angels, so he'll continue to wait until later this summer to see what's available.
- Frank Thomas is working with hitting coach Mike Easler, who believes "Frank might give it to the All-Star break." Easler says another client of his, Jacque Jones, could help a club.
- Jim Edmonds would play in the right situation, but his agent Paul Cohen doesn't know if there will be an offer. Damion Easley, another Cohen client, would also like to continue his career.
- A friend of Orlando Hernandez's tells Davidoff he's considering a comeback. El Duque didn't pitch in the Majors last year.
- In my opinion, these free agents are better served playing independent league ball than working out privately.
Thomas to the sox
Meanwhile Ortiz has some phantom DL stint

If Edmonds would sign for cheap, he'd be a great pickup for the Braves to play CF or RF.

Byrd may still have a little something left, but the rest of the guys are essentially washed up. Working out privately proves nothing; each of them needs to go to AAA ball and give a major league team a reason to find them a roster spot at the major league minimum.
The players will say they have proved themselves in the big leagues and should not have to go to AAA again.
Baloney! Guys at the tail end of their careers need to show that they are not finished by playing, not by "working out privately" while looking backwards at what they used to be.
Major league ball players who could not get major league deals anymore because they skills have eroded used to head back to AAA just to prove they could still hit/pitch. And, some of them would get back to the big leagues - at least for a while. But now, players are too proud or have made too much money to want to prove they can still contribute.

Byrd should take the year off. He should wait to see any open spots in the red sox, yankees, mets or la's pitching staff

What does Byrd offer that Penny doesnt already give (or not give more). I'd rather the Red Sox utilize Buccholz, Bowden and Masterson over bringing in Byrd again. Seems like their potential will be the same as Byrd's.

"I'm back from vacation. Anyways, who cares about these freaks. The Yankees will sign Halladay trade for Santana Hernandez and Greinke, then they'll sign Webb Lee(who currently sucks) holliday mauer hamilton albert calos pena and jason bay... The Yankees wont sign fat-ass grannies like Howard or McCann."
Nobody will ever take you seriously if you say stuff like that. McCann and Howard aren't fat-asses like you say they are and who would they trade? They have a horrible farm system and not all those players want to play for a greedy-ass Yankees team. Also try to use periods in your sentences.

This is how star careers end in 2009... not with a bang but with a whimper.
And by whimper, I mean silent, silent telephone.

Not that they need him, but I would like to see Edmonds come back to STL (on the cheap) to mentor some of the younger guys. He's in the area anyway and the fans still love him.
Sign him up Mo!

Easler is a good guy for Frank Thomas, because of how he stresses a slightly more aggressive approach. At Frank's age, he probably needs to take a few more chances.
I wish Easler was still with the Dodgers in some capacity, because I think Mattingley's style is a negative for guys like Martin and Loney.

It's so much easier for a pither to come back from such a layoff but a hitter, especially ones with eroded skils like Thomas and Edmonds is a lot tougher to imagine a real contribution. THomas would have to be an everday DH as opposed to a guy coming off the bench to be of any use. Game time speed is much different then just taking batting practice.
