« Cardinals Could Acquire A Third Baseman | Main | Braves Talk: Infante, Francoeur »
According to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser:
Oakland is likely to talk to the Indians about Mark DeRosa, who is on the block. The A's had some interest in the infielder after the 2006 season. The Indians are believed to be looking for pitching, but the A's won't trade any of their hotshot young pitchers.
Second baseman Mark Ellis should be back in June, but the A's are getting a .177/.270/.300 line over at the hot corner. The A's are currently 7 games out and in last place, though, so they might be the ones shopping veterans a month from now.
Speaking of DeRosa, Joel Sherman of the New York Post wonders if a deal involving him, Jamey Carroll, and J.J. Putz could be worked out between the Mets and Indians. He says Carroll is an Omar Minaya favorite.

Dealing one of DeRosa and Carroll makes sense but dealing them both does not. Who would be the utility infielder for the Indians?

No.
Sell time.
Let Holliday heat up and trade trade trade.
Unless Cahill and other young pitchers magically figure it out like, really soon, the A's shouldn't be buyers.

Please, Oakland, just promote Eric Patterson and let him play for a month.

Oakland needs a 3rd bagger badly

No one in their right mind should ever judge the Oakland A's in May.
Why do people trip so hard on being 7 games out right now? Bud unbalanced the schedule remember? They get to play their div rivals an obscene amount of times over the rest of the year, 7 games out on May 21 is absolutely nothing. People forget that its a 162 game season, theres so much room to work with.
The A's only have to be a better team than the 3 others in their division, and with the ways things are headed, they soon will be. DeRosa at 3B would be perfect, no one needs to see Crosby and Hannahan anymore, ever.

@melonis
Gotta love Anderson's game last night, I think he's pretty close to figuring it out. Outman-Braden-Duke is looking pretty decent, Id love to see them sign Pedro Martinez or Paul Byrd though just for that veteran presence/innings eating ability.

@tuna411
Patterson is a perfect NL player, A's dont play in that league. Dude needs out of Oakland like crazy.

lol, WOW, you must lend me this magic crystal ball of yours so I too can see the future.
Patterson has a whopping 52 career big league games. How could you know that?
At AAA the guy went .313 with 3 HRs, 14 RBIs and 17 SB's this season which is a LOT better than a great number of high grade MLB prospects so pardon the A's for thinking about calling the kid up.
Please do share with us how you have come to your opinion?

Can we just get an article that says "Mark DeRosa is a Fit for Every Team"
The guy plays 6 positions, and is relatively cheap. He fits everywhere. We get it.

"No.
Sell time."
Yeah.. with all their young talent and the issues in their rotation, 2010 and beyond seems like a much more logical target than going after it this season.
Hope that guys like Holliday, Giambi, Cabrera and Springer heat up, so you can deal them away for more prospects.
The long term rotation of Anderson, Cahill, Gallagher, Mazzaro and whoever else from their bevy of prospects, should keep them around for a while.
They really need some help in the infield though, as they essentially have Cardenas, Weeks, Carter and Doolittle at first base, and that's pretty much it.

xethicx,
Ive watched every inning of Patterson in an Oakland uni, at the plate he either looks AAAA or like a guy who needs to come up in the NL, not to mention he's a total hack at 2B.
AAA numbers are pretty meaningless a lot of the time. Todd Linden should be an all-star by now if you think AAA stats are a good gague for players stints in the show.

Its May 21, apparently to some knee-jerk incomprehensibles that means "Sell time", nevermind how our 2 big name sluggers are notorious 2nd half performers and we have 2 AA guys learning-by-doing in the rotation right now. Braden&Outman are really blossoming, Anderson was excellent yesterday, Duke is coming back in under a month, this team is primed to make a run at the div title.
Someone is freaking out a little early. Holliday isnt getting traded unless Beane can get a vastly better deal than 2 draft picks. Oakland isnt selling this year no matter how badly you want them to. If anything, the A's are buying not selling.

@ PL
I'm not judging the Oakland A's by what Giambi and Holliday are doing. Even if they were hitting.
The problem is this.
Cahill's numbers are AWFUL. More BBs than K's, and a FIP over 7. He needs to go back to AAA before he falls apart, because its coming.
I think the A's are a strong team once Giambi and Holliday start hitting, but I'm not sure about the starting pitching. The A's would be better off letting the better young arms (except Anderson, I think he's MLB ready) get fixed in AAA. The bullpen is also really sustaining a disproportional amount of innings compared to all other MLB teams, which is a major problem (which means its going to get worse).
I'd like to see the team play till July before trading Holliday, unless someone gets stupid and offers some awesome young 3B prospect for him.

"Cahill's numbers are AWFUL. More BBs than K's, and a FIP over 7. He needs to go back to AAA before he falls apart, because its coming."
As you said, more walks than strikeouts and an FIP over seven. If you ask me, he's already pretty much fallen apart. Let him go back to AAA before you start to mess with head.
Even if Dallas Braden and Josh Outman have been pleasant surprises, Eveland totally fell apart, Anderson and Cahill don't look ready yet, and the performances of Gallagher and Gonzalez have been disappointing.
The bullpen is good and the offense can be pretty good, but the rotation has major questions that I'm not sure they can overcome.
If they could add a decent starter to coincide with Duchscherer's arrival, then maybe they could work it out if the bats come around, but the odds don't look great.
