« Week In Review: 6/14/09 - 6/21/09 | Main | Josh Johnson Will Seek Big Payday »
According to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, the Angels scouted Pedro Martinez last week. There was some question as to which teams actually saw the Friday audition. However, Shaikin learned from Angels GM Tony Reagins that the Halos will pass on Martinez for baseball (not financial) reasons. Shaikin's source says Pedro was working around 85 mph.
Shaikin adds:
The Dodgers did not scout the workout, and Manager Joe Torre said today that the team has not discussed Martinez since spring training.
Summing up previous reports: the Nationals weren't in attendance Friday, the Brewers didn't get a chance to see him, and the Yankees will pass. We don't have definitive word on the Rays, Rangers, Cardinals, D'Backs, Indians, and Cubs. Rays exec Andrew Friedman downplayed his team's interest though.

I'd be surprised if anyone is willing to sign him for more than minimum wage.

Exactly, he needs to sign a minor league deal with incintives and work his way back. Get over your errogant self Pedro you've been mediocre for 3 years now nobody owes you anything

It strikes me as so ridiculous that on the one hand Pedro claims he wants to play and that money isn't a factor, but on the other refuses to lower his demands. I don't think he has much left but someone would certainly give him a shot at the league minimum.

He held out way too long. Any team with immediate needs won't sign him at any price, and the teams which could wait for him to come up to game ready probably won't pay his price.

"refuses to lower his demands."
That's what happens when the greediest humans on the planet get involved: Agents (yuck!)

It’s kind of sad that Pedro is becoming a bit of a laughing stock at this point. Such an amazing career. And although always a strong personality, this is different. Either retire, or do what it takes to get back on the field. But playing around and acting as though you are something you are not is only going to tarnish your name.

85mph? Martinez's people must have used the wrong tuning fork on that radar gun when they reported he was throwing 94mph huh? Paul Byrd can even throw 85mph and has been and that speed for years, plus imagine he is willing to work for far less than Martinez and be happy to do it and not sulk.

Seems to me if Pedro wants to pitch for a few more years as he has stated; it would be in his best interest to sign a low budget deal now and then try to get paid in the offseason for a 1 year contract next year.
The only reason for not doing this as far as I can tell is even Pedro knows he stinks and that won't be happening.
