Athletics manager Bob Geren informed the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman this afternoon that Eric Chavez is headed for back surgery. Don't think he'll retire with the cash Oakland still owes him.

Such a sad story. Used to idolize this guy for being one of the top third basemen I had (personally) ever seen. Hoping for the best for him.

Definately sad. Eric is a class act, and a great guy who just wants to earn the money he's being paid. I hope he finds his way back as an infielders coach at some point.

Nothing against Chavez, but I think he is done.. He hasn't been healthy enough to play the last three seasons and when he has been in the lineup, he is hurting the team with the bat.
Between '09, '10 and his '11 buyout, the A's are on the hook for $26 million... Ouch.

Yah no sorry, he will retire.
I dont think he will force the A's to buy him out, I think he has a lot more respect for the organization than that.
Theyll come to a settlement of some type.
