Olney On Glavine, Dunn, Penny

ESPN.com's Buster Olney wonders where Tom Glavine will land and comes up with a couple options. The Rangers, who are looking to shed Vicente Padilla, "will probably talk about Glavine." Olney says the pitcher could also "fit cheaply" with the Marlins and former Braves coach, Fredi Gonzalez. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors:

  • Adam Dunn fits Boston's needs, but the Nationals would want a "big-time pitching prospect" in exchange for the slugger. The two teams match up well, but Olney warns this doesn't mean we'll see a deal.
  • The Phillies heard that the Red Sox would want infielder Jason Donald in exchange for Brad Penny
  • The Reds are looking for a third baseman.
  • Olney hears buzz that the Mariners may pass on Dustin Ackley, who's considered the best college hitter in the draft. If that's the case, the Padres would consider him and Donovan Tate with their 3rd pick.
  • The Brewers are "actively looking" to improve their team.

Dunn on Boston would be slick. He could step in as the new full time DH in bean town if they extend him and buy out Ortiz.

I know Boston fans love Papi but it looks to me like he is running out of steam and focus.

Its time for new blood in my opinion. Dunn would be a good call.

I still can't understand how the Red Sox front office thinks that they will be able to acquire high end prospects for Brad Penny. No harm in shooting for the moon, I suppose, but I'd be shocked if they received anything beyond a mid-tier prospect for him.

Then again, perhaps it's because I'm used to receiving nothing but mid-tier prospects in all of my team's meddlings.

Oh, and by the way, here's to the Mariners and Padres passing on Ackley! Cot damn that would be a wonderful way to start the summer.

Reds are looking for a 3B? What does that mean for Encarnacion? and not sure any 3B are available besides Beltre..and hes expensive and not playing well. I would love Ryan Zimmerman, but that would take a king's ransom.

So, if the M's pass on Ackley. Does that mean they go after Crow or a different position player.

Glavine back to the Mets?

Getting Zimm from the Nationals would be like getting McLouth from the Bucs....oh...wait. I guess the face of your franchise is not safe these days.

I'm going to second the opinion on Penny. I don't understand why anyone thinks he's good anymore. Yes, he was good at one point. Yes, his stats in May were better than his stats in April. Still nothing more than a run of the mill #4 or 5. If he was playing for a small market team, trading him would be a pure salary dump and thats all it should be now.

As a Phillies fan, I would be upset if they aquired Penny, since he would be a lateral move at best. I would be more upset if they traded Jason Donald to get him. If they do trade Donald to the Red Sox, it should be for Bucholz, Bowden or Masterson. Nothing less.

Highly doubtful Donald alone gets you Bucholz. But I'm right with you when it comes to NOT settling for Penny.

"Oh, and by the way, here's to the Mariners and Padres passing on Ackley! Cot damn that would be a wonderful way to start the summer."

The Padres might actually pass on him for reasons besides signability. They have Gonzalez and Blanks at 1B and need pitching. Although its always smart to take best player available regardless of position.

"So, if the M's pass on Ackley. Does that mean they go after Crow or a different position player."

I want to say Donovan Tate. But then the M's might not want to commit too much to 1 pick since they have 2 first rounders and one supplemental pick.

"Reds are looking for a 3B? What does that mean for Encarnacion?"

EE moves to the outfield, I'd think.

And Brad Penny is a product of the Boston Hype Machine.

"Getting Zimm from the Nationals would be like getting McLouth from the Bucs....oh...wait. I guess the face of your franchise is not safe these days."

Zimmerman is a MUCH better player than McLouth though.

If Seattle passes on Ackley I would think they are looking for an arm instead. There are significant signability questions with Tate because of his two sport committment to UNC, although Seattle could afford to buy him out. If Seattle passes on Ackley I think they take an arm, and probably convert them to the bullpen sometime during the 2010 season (just kidding, kind of). I doubt Ackley slides past SD, since his short stint in CF seemed to prove he can play there. The Pads would probably sign him and convert him to the OF.

"I still can't understand how the Red Sox front office thinks that they will be able to acquire high end prospects for Brad Penny. No harm in shooting for the moon, I suppose, but I'd be shocked if they received anything beyond a mid-tier prospect for him."

Jason Donald isn't shooting for the moon. Donald IS a mid-tier prospect. He put up good numbers in single and double A, but he's projected as a utility guy. Average power, slightly above average speed, mediocre range and arm strength. He's a potential AAAA player who may or may not actually end up being any better than Jed Lowrie.

what do we think the asking price would be for dunn.we know Bucholz is out what about penny and someone else. as a ortiz fan i think we need another big bat.ortiz looks like he need a ton of time to fix his swing.personaly i think he messed up his swing last year playing when his hurt.but still all off season and this spring he should of gotten it back. lets face it theses guy get paid millions of dollars.its time to put him on the dl and send him to florida and work on the swing and maybe in late aug or sept see where hes at and its hes got it back the we have a good off the bench bat but thats it.

I would be very excited to have him on the club starting out next year in LF batting in the #2 hole behind Ichiro. If the M's take a arm it better be someone with a clean health record...otherwise it is Tate or Ackley hands down.

Dear Cincy

You can have Josh Fields for free

Penny and someone else for Dunn will not happen. The Nats want good prospects, not crappy overpaid has-beens.

In almost 200 ABs..Donald is hitting .235 and his power has leveled off at 15 extra0base hits and 1 HR.

He is not a top-tier prospect.

Also the DUNN is a problem in two ways. We still have Ortiz on payroll for 1.5 years about 13 million a year. If the nationals think they are getting a top 5 prospect for him, then we should move on...I would like to see what Kotsay plays for us over the month of June.

Penny for Donald makes no sense to me. He has less upside than Lowry and projects as a utility guy. Sox should look into adding a B prospect w/Penny to get the overated Carrasco from Philly!

The nats definitely need prospects. Also mlb ready players wouldn't hurt either as they have even less of them! Take away Zimmerman and we're talking AAA.

Buster Olney "hears buzz."

Regardless of whatever that means, the M's are taking a bat at #2 and Dustin Ackley is clearly the best.

I'm sure Buster Olney "hears buzz" about the Nationals passing on Strasburg as well

Regardless of whether Donald is a mid tier prospect, I still think that 6 years of Donald is worth alot more than a half year of Penny (not to mention paying his salary). And while you are correct about Donald's limited range, he actually has an above average arm.

Penny for Donald makes no sense to me. He has less upside than Lowry and projects as a utility guy. Sox should look into adding a B prospect w/Penny to get the overated Carrasco from Philly!

Absolutely ridiculous post. I understand you are a Sox fan, but you can't possibly think Penny is good. Regardless of what you think of Carrasco, if he goes anywhere, it will be for a legitimate #1 or 2.

you are kiddin "but you cant possibly think PENNY is good." HE IS 5-1 I DONT CARE HOW MUCH RUN SUPPORT HE GETS HE IS GOOD OH AND Obsessions,

there is no such thing as AAAA

HE IS NOT GOOD I DONT CARE HOW MUCH RUN SUPPORT HE GETS BECAUSE W-L AREN'T THE PROPER WAY TO EVALUATE PITCHERS.

I can't think of a more "meh" pitcher out there than Penny.

AAAA is a common term for a guy who does well in AAA but languishes there because they're really not good enough to consistently hold down a job in the bigs. Since you seem to be a bit of a homer, I'll name some Red Sox AAAA guys:

Gil Velasquez, Charlie Zink, Jonathan Van Every. Those guys are the definition of AAAA.

Potential top of the rotation starters in the case of Bucholz, or proven and controlable (Masterson) in his case do not go for projected backup middle infielders like Donald. His projections are the exact same as Lowrie, except that Lowrie is a switch hitter that makes Donald even less valuable to the Sox and Lowrie will be back in 3 weeks.

This Penny for Donald rumor cannot be real, unless it is for Donald to be flipped in another deal, there is not reason for him to be on the Sox at the moment.

On Adam Dunn..

Yes, Boston dearly needs a replacement bat for Ortiz. it is high time and Boston does have an abundance of BP arms on the big league roster, as well as waiting at AAA level with retreads that they have converted to the relief role that are taking off exceptionally well in Fernando Cabrera, Hunter Jones, Rocky Cherry and even Marcus McBeth. All have MLB experience and all are haveing outstanding years for the PawSox in relief and could be called up to give the Nationals the controlable closer that they DEARLY need in Delcarmen, as well as 21 year old starting pitcher prospect Felix Doubront at AA that is also having an excellent year.

thehoagster,

I can, Jamie Moyer...

alright that's just really really DUMB. If Carrasco is SO overrated then why do you want him? No deal. If Carrasco goes it will be with a Donald type for a good pitcher like Bedard or Peavy not for an old scrub like Penny. Sox fans need to remember we destroyed Penny last year when we played against him. It was like batting practice. Penny we don't need. Now if you wanted to have us throw in Carrasco you should give up one of your top pitching prospects. Say:

Donald, Marson Carrasco

for:

Bucholz.

that deal I'd do.

oh and circusfresh,

2 out of Moyer's last 3 starts were quality starts with the other one missing by one run.

6IP and 3R is just fine from moyer with our offense.

oh and sox fans have NO room to talk about our starting pitching and Moyer. Look at daisuke and Lester. At least Moyer's OLD. What's their excuse?

Lester and Beckett have both came back around the last 3-4 starts, not to mention, the Sox have rotation depth at the ML level, as well as a "problem" at any moment when Smoltz is activated as to whose spot he will take in the current rotation PhilsWSchamps.

Rotation, as well as pitching in general is the least of the Red Sox worries as the team ERA has been steadily dropping since early May.

johns,

actually i said daisuke and lester not beckett and lester.

And Lester had in his last 5 games three starts giving up 5 or more runs. that's not good. People expect that of Moyer or Blanton, not of lester.

And we've added Happ and more recently Bastardo who has pitched well albeit in only one start. We're going to let those kids do their thing until they prove they can't before we go after a mediocre Penny. that was my point.

Actually in comparison my phils are very much like the Red Sox. Solid offense, solid bullpen, improving rotation. It should be a nice series next weekend and hopefully for both of us a World Series preview.

I would love to see the Sox-Phils in a WS.. My 2 fav teams from years ago when Scmitty, Luzinski, Carlton, Ron reed, McCarver, McBride etc.. were on them. No bother here :-)

Lester has had the bad inning problem, but that's fine, look at his other stats and you will see no problems and the Sox have not either, just like his last start, a win with 13 K's. Dice K came back from the WBC with a bad arm and has made 2 starts since coming back from the DL, not really fair to judge him, but he let up 1 run in his last tight rope win, that is the same way he went 18-3 last year and Sox fans are pretty much used to him stranding guys all over the bases if he can manage games like he did his last performance.

I agree on Penny, if the Phillies can get a top guy like Bedard, Oswalt, or talk Peavy into coming to Philly, it would be awesome. BUT! I would not think that the Phillies should give up the farm to get it done. The Mets (I don't think at least) have it pitching wise either to get it done and the Phillie bats look better from the games have seen.

Maybe Hammel can get his arm strength back and Moyer.. Well, he is bound to get his location back, the guy vs the Fish I watched was throwing the same "junk" as always, just was throwing it over the heart of the plate way too often and imagine he has been doing this to other teams also.

Only get Penny from Boston if the Sox sell low, like to clear a roster spot for Smoltz, Bucholz, Bowden etc.. I don't see them doing that however, but do see some desperate team like brewers, mets etc.. actually giving up at least a B+ *somebody* prospect for him.

Obviously Zimmerman would take a king's ransom. But could the Reds pay it?

Bailey
Alonso
Fraizer
Soto
Stubbs

That would def help the Nats like no other, and would greatly improve the Red's ML roster. Nats would prolly have to throw another little something in, but the Reds have some real good prospects.

johns,

they don't make afros like Shake and Bake's anymore!! That team was great and Michael Jack was my favorite.

Moyer I've always contended will be fine. He's been a nibbler forever now and if he gets his calls on the outside corners he'll do fine. He hasn't gotten them this year which is why he's struggled. He'll be fine. I'd expect he'll end up with 10-13 wins and an ERA around 4.5 I can live with that.

I've said the same that we shouldn't trade a finally strong farm system unless its for serious impact. Drabek has surpassed Carrasco (who actually had a solid outing tonight) Carlos' stats have been bad this year because for some reason the LHV manager doesn't realize when he's tiring and leaves him in. He shut out Indianapolis tonight for example through 5 and then gave up a run in the 6th and one in the 7th before being lifted. He's only 22 so there's no reason to rush him. With the development too of Brown and Taylor they are two outfielders who have 5 tool ability and are currently both around a 1.000 OPS. I'll keep them and take my chances with the kids getting it done.

Phillies won't trade Donald. He'll probably end up playing 3rd next year to open up the Feliz money to bring in a big pitcher. Or atleast this is what I am crossing my fingers for!

Hammels looked totally awesome vs LAD tonight, hopefully this will kill some of the "give up the farm" talk for Oswalt/Bedard/Peavy talk now and Moyer will work on his finese now, or some kind of trade for a #5, or maybe Byrd/Glavine picked up later on if the Phills still want rotation depth.

"they don't make afros like Shake and Bake's anymore!! That team was great and Michael Jack was my favorite."

Isn't that the truth! Tommy Hutton, who you am sure also remember from those old Phillie teams, is the Fish color guy on TV and harks back to the old glory days that I also remember quite well and I love it with old stories and antics that went on.

yes he looked very good. Finally like the hamels of 2008. If we can just get adequate starting pitching we'll be just fine. Lidge is starting to come around but i want to see him in a 5-4 game against the Sox or Mets and see how he comes out of it.

Oh and the Dodger that annoyed me the most back then, Ron Cey. He always had a hit that killed us.

Yo! Penny has been pitching himself back into shape and looks more like Penny of old
after each outing. Lets not forget Brad won 16 games in both 2006 & 2007. Likewise, he is only 31.

This writer wouldn't be surprised to see Theo keep Penny and have him stay in the rotation for the remainder of the season. Experience counts down the stretch, especially if TEE is the opposition. They, TEE, have a few potent bats.

If Papi breaks out by hitting some dingers and Lowerie returns to form, any talk about adding to the Red Sox roster from outside their organization will be just that, talk, wishful thinking...IMHO...

Dempster Babies ...

no reason to think Donald can play 3b in the big leagues. The Phils haven't even used him there in Triple A, except for a handful of games. He'll never hit enough to be a 3rd baseman, and he'll never field enough to supplant Feliz. He is destined to be either (a) traded, or (b) the future Eric Bruntlett.

Dumbest thing I've ever read here: Carrasco for an under-achieving malcontent whom the Red Sox are just going to have to cast off in a week or two anyway to make room for Smoltz and/or Buchholz.

Lets trade Encarnacion, Soto, and Bailey for Zimmerman.

Mark DeRosa... 'Nuff said
