After the Mets debacle for Roy Halladay, will Tim ever stop posting Heyman threads, please. Let at least 2 sources confirm it or else I am going to start tweeting rumors as well!
Posted by: theJonathan | July 31, 2009 at 02:03 PM
What....wow? I like Laroche and all but why? we already have a streaky left handed 1st baseman...
Posted by: JW | July 31, 2009 at 02:03 PM
I think the BoSox would give up Laroche for a bag of baseballs and a single A prospect with some upsdie.
Posted by: RedSoxFreak85 | July 31, 2009 at 02:05 PM
Ok, give Boston Chipper Jones and you can have Lowell and Laroche.
Posted by: nickname | July 31, 2009 at 02:05 PM
NOOOOOO! never thought id be happy with Krochman as our 1B, but c'mon.....keep the Laroche family out of Hotlanta!
Posted by: sconia25 | July 31, 2009 at 02:06 PM
How about LaRoche for Devall???
Any takers?
Posted by: theJonathan | July 31, 2009 at 02:06 PM
What?please don't do this to me. Keep laroche out of ATL!
Posted by: WS2009 | July 31, 2009 at 02:07 PM
The Mets should get Adam LaRoche, they need him more than other team right now [except for the Pirates, because they have no one on their team except for D - C list players, & minor leaguers, & I know the Pirates don't want LaRoche back]
Posted by: Baseball4ever | July 31, 2009 at 02:07 PM
Frank Wren is an aggressive GM, and when he finds someone he likes, he goes after him. If he could bring back LaRoche, who even though is a free agent at season's end, I'm sure he would return, he still has several friend on the team, Chipper, Huddy, McCann. The Braves have a deep list of pitching prospects they could deal. I could see this happening. Personally being a Braves fan, I hope it does.
Posted by: jcrabtree | July 31, 2009 at 02:08 PM
LaRoche big upgrade over Crotchman.. Im good with this is the braves get him back.. send Krotchman away with another bum prospect and id do it!
Posted by: ChopBraves09 | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
As a Braves fan, I hope this trade does. It would be nice to see Adam back.
:D
Posted by: atlbraves312 | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
Why? sure he has more power than Casey but come on, CAsey is great, I love his defense and he is a great small ball player. We don't need Laroche, what we need is some consistency in our lineup. We have the pieces if they will just get going.
Posted by: BravesFan101 | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
if the Theo can somehow convince the braves to give us Yunel Escobar, i would attempt to make this one work
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
Wow, I'm shocked at the responses to this rumor. Why are Braves fan hating on Adam LaRoche?
Posted by: jcrabtree | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
jcrabtree, I know! I think it was just because of ONE GAME.. ONE GAME.. and it was against the nats i think.. but it's nice to see him back...
Posted by: atlbraves312 | July 31, 2009 at 02:10 PM
According to Scott Wallace if the MArtinez trade goes through which it did LaRoche goes to the Mets
Posted by: NYYLastPlace4ever | July 31, 2009 at 02:11 PM
04Forever I hope you are joking
Posted by: BravesFan101 | July 31, 2009 at 02:11 PM
We have enough singles and doubles hitters! We need a stick and Roachy we give us 10 more hrs the rest of the year than Kotch!
Posted by: travis0548 | July 31, 2009 at 02:11 PM
boston will not be getting yunel at all no way ans i dunno bout laroche, i think kotchman is fine unless we could get a bullpen arm for him
Posted by: murphfan | July 31, 2009 at 02:11 PM
First of all Devall will not be traded for Laroche. If the Braves pick him up it will be for next to nothing. I just dont understand why the Braves would be interested in the first place unless the are planning on making another trade that sends Kotchman somewhere for relief help, but with Laroche being a free agent next year it still doesnt add up to me.
Posted by: bravesfan23 | July 31, 2009 at 02:12 PM
thats funny cause kotch has hit 4 hrs this month and is on a tear
Posted by: murphfan | July 31, 2009 at 02:13 PM
I can understand if they are mad about that one time when he "drifted off" and started to think about fishing and hunting and allowed an infield single on a ball to first base, but that was ONE time. But also remember, he was diagnosed with ADD shortly afterward, so can you have to cut the guy some slack.
Posted by: jcrabtree | July 31, 2009 at 02:13 PM
LOL.
Posted by: BuccoNation | July 31, 2009 at 02:13 PM
All I know is if he does come back to Atlanta he better hope he doesn't lollygag his butt around third ever again. That crap he pulled in the playoffs against Astros still gives me nightmares.
Posted by: bravo84 | July 31, 2009 at 02:14 PM

Posted by: ChopBraves09 | July 31, 2009 at 02:09 PM
You're kidding me right? You do realize Kotchman has NO ERRORS and you want to replace him with someone who will definitely provide you with a few + not that big if any kind of bat upgrade.
Thank god you aren't our GM
Posted by: Bring Back Andruw | July 31, 2009 at 02:14 PM
" Why are Braves fan hating on Adam LaRoche?"
Because they want JD Drew and his .250 BA instead?
Why they (or any team that needs a potent LH 1B bat) would not want LaRoche, when the Sox will probably swap him for a marginal prospect and pay his salary is really weird, especially with Atlanta looking to make the PO this year. Marlins may take a different view of LaRoche, if they don't foolishly over pay for Nick Johnson 1st.
Posted by: johns | July 31, 2009 at 02:15 PM
i only see this working if Boston adds a RP. hope that if it happens we can keep kotchman. he is a good hitter, not power but good hitter. maybe we can put LaRoche on the bench and say goodbye to norton.
Posted by: youwishyouwereme | July 31, 2009 at 02:15 PM
bravesfan23,
Yes, it is an odd idea. Maybe Wren already had another team interested in Kotchman for a reliever ...
This would make it easier to release Norton, however.
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | July 31, 2009 at 02:16 PM
Braves get LaRoche
Red Sox get Adrian Gonzalez
San Diego gets Kotchman, and Red Sox Prospects
Posted by: drumzalicious | July 31, 2009 at 02:16 PM
LaRoche has a real good glove as well, and more power than Kotchman. Kotchman is okay... but he's not really good enough to start...
Posted by: Braves-NL-Champs-2010 | July 31, 2009 at 02:17 PM
Personally, I wouldn't mind my team taking a chance on LaRoche.
Second half splits...
2008 .304/.361/.613
2007 .312/.371/.482
2006 .323/.387/.655
Posted by: elgato7664 | July 31, 2009 at 02:17 PM
Actually, Kotchman has made an error.
He's a better glove man than Adam, without question. I think they're both OK offensively; Kotchman gets on base a little more frequently. LaRoche has more power.
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | July 31, 2009 at 02:17 PM
Braves get LaRoche
Red Sox get Adrian Gonzalez
San Diego gets Kotchman, and Red Sox Prospects
Posted by: drumzalicious | July 31, 2009 at 02:16 PM
So we get nothing?
Posted by: Bring Back Andruw | July 31, 2009 at 02:18 PM
We acquired laroche? Im actually ok with this. We could use more power. We couldnt of given up much
Posted by: braves77 | July 31, 2009 at 02:19 PM
I'd be strangely comfortable if the Sox added the injury prone Gonzalez here. The Sox have been looking for a Lefty in the Pen and Gonzalez is easily expendable with Soriano.
Posted by: baxter4218 | July 31, 2009 at 02:19 PM
why do i not like this move.....idk, his sub .250 avg?
Kroch has almost as many RBIs in what has been a dreadful lineup all year, not to mention he hasnt made an error as a Brave! Adam LaRoche has nothing to offer, and im pretty sure hes a downgrade from Kroch
Posted by: sconia25 | July 31, 2009 at 02:19 PM
Didn't we already besically know the Gonzo deal isn't going down and the BoSox are going after VMart? AGonz would cost the Red Sox nearly all their pitching depth anyways.
Laroche/Kotchman platoon makes no sense. I see these rumors about Luke Scott, at least he'd help out the team.
Kotchman/LaRoche, KJ/Prado, and Anderson/Diaz/Church. The Braves need consistency not more platoons.
Posted by: insomniac | July 31, 2009 at 02:19 PM
and by Gonzalez I mean Mike Gonzalez, RP. Not Adrian Gonzalez. That pipe dream passed
Posted by: baxter4218 | July 31, 2009 at 02:20 PM
Interesting, LaRoche is back ( :D ) but who did we gave?
Posted by: atlbraves312 | July 31, 2009 at 02:20 PM
LaRoche can come back and supplant Norton as a bench bat for all i care...
Pay his salary and add Delcarmen to it and you have a deal Boston...LMAO...
But seriously, I don't see the purpose when we need a RH power bat and a back end RH reliever...unless thats really why we're interested in Adam, is to get a reliever packaged w/ him.

Kotchman for Laroche
Posted by: Kulaid33gobrs | July 31, 2009 at 02:20 PM
Mother of God I hate LaRoche. This is not the Braves M.O. This guy was clueless at the plate.
Posted by: BraveNewWorld | July 31, 2009 at 02:20 PM
"Braves get LaRoche
Red Sox get Adrian Gonzalez
San Diego gets Kotchman, and Red Sox Prospects"
Could work if Atlanta got a little more maybe like this
Boston gets: Adrian Gonzalez
San Diego gets: Kotchman, Bowden, Anderson, another prospect.
Atlanta gets: Laroche, prospect from Boston.
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2009 at 02:21 PM
"04Forever I hope you are joking"
well not straight up of course, im not that stupid. but for some other prospects too, i would like to see the sox upgrade that position, i dont fully trust Lowrie anymore

Kotchman for Laroche. just said on NESN
Posted by: Kulaid33gobrs | July 31, 2009 at 02:21 PM
sconia25,
Are you actually saying LaRoche hasn't been hitting in a dreadful lineup. I like LaRoche, (other than that one very slow trip around the bases) I don't know what you do with Kotchman though. We still have control of him for two years. I think Oakland needs a 1B, maybe Kotch and a good prospect for Wuertz.
Posted by: bravo84 | July 31, 2009 at 02:23 PM
"Kotchman for Laroche. just said on NESN"
LaRoche is not an improvement over Kotchman when you factor in defense. Stupid deal for Wren.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:24 PM
haha thank God the braves made this deal... laroche is a terrible stiff, glad mets didnt do this deal...
Posted by: Baseball Nut | July 31, 2009 at 02:24 PM
Seems as though this is a precursor to a bigger move i.e. Halladay or Gonzalez. Especially if Kotchman is the return
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2009 at 02:24 PM
i havent seen this confirmed anywhere.
Posted by: youwishyouwereme | July 31, 2009 at 02:24 PM
Oh my gosh. We better not have given up more than a free haircut. Why would ATL go straight up with casey?
Posted by: WS2009 | July 31, 2009 at 02:25 PM
"I think Oakland needs a 1B, maybe Kotch and a good prospect for Wuertz."
Oakland doesn't need a 1B. Not contending in '09, and one of Barton/Carter/Wallace should be taking over 1B in 2010. If two of those guys are not in the starting lineup, that team isn't going anywhere in 2010 IMO.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:25 PM
Hmmm...not too sure about trading Kotchman for LaRoche straight up, I thought the Braves would have dealt a minor league pitcher, a little surprised about this.
Posted by: jcrabtree | July 31, 2009 at 02:28 PM
that doesnt make any sense for the sox either, there is still a logjam at first...

bravo, cant disagree there...the Bucs are just as dreadful, the difference is that laroche has been hitting 3 or 4, and kroch has been hitting 5 and 6, and recently 7th. You cant deny that hes been hitting very well in the 7th spot the past couple weeks.
We have downgraded defensively, and will loose laroche after the season. As most ppl in this forum have said, it doesnt make a lot of sense for the braves.
Posted by: sconia25 | July 31, 2009 at 02:28 PM

Wren was doing good this year until now. How the hell do you break up the current hot streak the Braves are on right now?? Kotchman was doing fine.
Posted by: BraveNewWorld | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
That yahoo link doesn't say anything about LaRoche to ATL. LaRoche's name isn't even in the article. Only mention of ATL has to do with one of Toronto's relivers.
Posted by: l0stnumber | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Casey Kotchman coming back to Sox, according to Gordon Edes.
Posted by: Scott Candage | July 31, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Kotchman + Major Prospects to FLA for HANLEY!! haha jk :)
Posted by: Kulaid33gobrs | July 31, 2009 at 02:30 PM
Good call Melonis, I bow to your superiority in all things Athletics, I was just thinking Kotch was pretty much a throw away guy and could give you a glove there until they're ready. Plus I wasn't exactly thinking a scrub pitcher either.
Posted by: bravo84 | July 31, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Laroche to Atl
and Kotchman to the Bosox from the Boston Globe.
Fine by me... Kotchman has more upside... you know what you're getting from laroche.
Good job BoSox.
Posted by: RedSoxFreak85 | July 31, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Why Kotchman? Wasn't the Laroche trade intended to get rid of a crowded corner infield? Shortstop please!

Wren i will strangle you
Posted by: Bring Back Andruw | July 31, 2009 at 02:32 PM
I'm very surprised by this move. I hope it's not just a straightup. The Braves need to get something else in return than just LaRoche.
Posted by: ABravesFan | July 31, 2009 at 02:33 PM
According to Fangraphs the relative value of each so far has been:
LaRoche - $2m
Kotchman - $4m
Kotchman is cheaper, better, and more fundamentally sound. What he lacks in power he more than makes up with the glove and OB skills.
Only way this benefits Atlanta is if LaRoche goes on a 2nd half tear. Certainly possible but can't be counted on.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2009 at 02:33 PM
I have to believe that Kotchman isn't staying in Boston. He's going to be part of a blockbuster package.
Posted by: Gstill45 | July 31, 2009 at 02:33 PM
Yeah, something else HAS to be coming back to ATL in any Kotchman for LaRoche deal. And I don't mean salary relief.
Something tells me the only motif behind Kotch/LaRoche straight up for ATL would be salary relief.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:34 PM
Casey Kotchman was never with the Red Sox, Scott Candage. He was with the Angles, Braves, & today, he's been traded to the Red Sox
Also, on Metsblog.com, it said that the Mets were going to acquire LaRoche, which later confirmed that the Braves acquired him instead.
Met fans, including me, are going to be so mad if the Mets can't make a trade today.
Posted by: Baseball4ever | July 31, 2009 at 02:34 PM
Nesn just reported that tek has a neck problem, maybe put him on DL have victor catch and kotchman will be a bench till teck comes back and then we can try and do a waiver trade to get ride of kotch when tek is back.
Posted by: abaker5252 | July 31, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Braves have to be getting an arm in this deal.
Posted by: drumzalicious | July 31, 2009 at 02:36 PM
I believe we will see Kotchman dealt elsewhere as well.
The Sox likely did add something else but also likely have another suitor for Kotchman as opposed to LaRoche.
Kotchman isn't great but he is cheap enough with enough upside to appeal as a part of a larger package to someone else I'd think
Posted by: baxter4218 | July 31, 2009 at 02:36 PM

That's exactly what I meant.
Posted by: Scott Candage | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
If LaRoche was traded for Kotchman, this will be such a stupid trade for both teams. It's a wash for the most part in Atlanta, each play good defense, Adam has better power, Kotch has a better average. I figured Boston was getting rid of Adam LaRoche because he played first base and VMart will be switching between first and catcher. Unless Mike Lowell is retiring tomorrow, this deal is a whole lot of stupid.
Posted by: bigpat | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM
Awful, awful move by the Braves...Omar Minayaesque
Posted by: 86 Mets | July 31, 2009 at 02:40 PM

Flip him, Martinez and prospects 4 Gonzalez...possibly Bell too.
Posted by: SawxMan | July 31, 2009 at 02:41 PM
according to bowman casey might not of been traded.
If the LaRoche deal is complete, Casey Kotchman would seemingly be the odd man out. But a source has indicated that this move doesn't necessarily mean that Kotchman would also be traded.

"Awful, awful move by the Braves...Omar Minayaesque"
LOL awful by Boston. Kotchman can't hit and is worse than Doug Minky was when the Sox got him at the deadline in 2004. Trade LaRoche to the Fish then, somebody with prospects, not a glove guy who flat out can't hit in Kotchman with zilcho power.

This makes no sense for the sox, there's no way its Kotchman for Laroche straight up. If anything its a class A type of player for Laroche. With youk, vmart, lowell, they have too many 1b types.
Posted by: braves77 | July 31, 2009 at 02:46 PM
"Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says LaRoche could be swapped for Casey Kotchman."
This makes no sense. Why would they trade Laroche for another first baseman when they already have too many.
Posted by: Little Bear | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
I believe Kotchman has to be going someplace else.
To me it is suprising the Red Sox have not addressed their backup OF situation by adding a bat there.
I coulde see Kotchman going in a deal for a guy like Cody Ross. Not Cody Ross specifically, but someone similar; a decent but lower end Right Handed hitting OF with some pop and an ability to play CF. Ross is pretty much that description.
