« Angels Trade Coming? | Main | Bannister, Bloomquist, Teahen Drawing Interest »
1:38pm: Done deal, says Yahoo's Gordon Edes. MLB Network's Tom Verducci says pitcher Bryan Price is the third hurler going to Cleveland in the trade.
1:35pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says (via Twitter) pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal (ESPN's Peter Gammons agrees). Gut reaction: nice haul. Mayo also says the two clubs are looking at additional names to add for Cleveland.
1:27pm: FOX now says Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard are not in this deal.
12:55pm: USA Today's Bob Nightengale via Twitter: the Red Sox are about to acquire first baseman/catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, trying to confirm, says it "looks good." FOX Sports agrees, and notes a lack of a third team involved. They also believe this kills the Adrian Gonzalez talks.

I hope Buchholz isn't involved
Posted by: sprtplyr999 | July 31, 2009 at 12:56 PM
Fantastic! As long as it doesn't cost too much, I love it. I would have loved AGone more but SD wanted too much.
Posted by: Scott Candage | July 31, 2009 at 12:56 PM
Thank god. Adrian Gonzalez is safe for now.
Posted by: sampsonite168 | July 31, 2009 at 12:58 PM
I don't think this does anything for the Red Sox. He's not a real difference maker. Is his production going to be more than Lowell's who he is replacing? I don't think it's that big of a difference. Maybe they aren't done dealing yet.
Posted by: RedSoxFreak85 | July 31, 2009 at 12:58 PM
I wonder who they gave up and who gets squeezed off the roster. Hard to imagine him fitting with Youkilis/Lowell/LaRoche.
I can't imagine the Indians dealing him without the Sox giving up at least one of Bowden, Masterson, Buchholz, Anderson, etc
Posted by: Gstill45 | July 31, 2009 at 12:58 PM
nice.

Not a Red Sox fan but love the pick-up. Even if it's Buccholz this is a great move.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Need more details! I hope we still have Buchholz
Posted by: xdodge | July 31, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Yeah, Cleveland is going to be GREAT in 2012. They are going to get a massive haul from the Red Sox on this deal. Can't wait to see who it is.
Posted by: SwarzakGuy40 | July 31, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Thank god. As a Yankee fan I am relieved to hear they won't be getting A-Gonz. V-Mart is nice and should do well in Boston but this in no way puts them over the top which is great.
Posted by: Russell | July 31, 2009 at 01:00 PM
I hope Theo reads this and sees that V-Mart will not get them into the playoffs...they need Halladay or Adrian too
Posted by: sprtplyr999 | July 31, 2009 at 01:00 PM
I really hope Buchholz wasn't involved.
Because I'd happily give Lars, Masterson, and Westmoreland for the difference between Victor through 2010 and Agonz through 2011
Posted by: jpcrecom | July 31, 2009 at 01:01 PM
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This sucks. I don't want v-mart. He's old, a terrible defender and slumping right now.
Posted by: gfulla | July 31, 2009 at 01:01 PM
And Halladay's chances of being moved go down even lower ...
Great job JP - you stuck it to everyone and you lost your best trading partners.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2009 at 01:01 PM
This mean laroche is gana be delt...poor guy goes from not being on a contending team, to a contending team now he prolly will be on a bad team again.
Posted by: Beantowndynasty | July 31, 2009 at 01:01 PM
Clay has to be involved. They wouldn't do it without him.
Posted by: baseball52 | July 31, 2009 at 01:01 PM
I'll be SHOCKED if the Indians got anybody decent. Seems to me this was a cost-cutting measure.
Posted by: mykolm | July 31, 2009 at 01:02 PM
It better not be for Buchholz. Anything more than Masterson and someone like Lin is overpaying.
Posted by: Gosser128 | July 31, 2009 at 01:02 PM
Heres the likely potential trade:
V-Mart and LaPorta to Boston
Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson to Cleveland
Posted by: RaiderBoSox | July 31, 2009 at 01:02 PM
This is a pretty funny post. "Via twitter" I have looked here earlier and at other sites and they all say that V-mart is heading to Boston....Come'on!
Posted by: forkball27 | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
V-Mart... Now, go for Halladay
Posted by: Latrappe | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
We really still need a quality starting pitcher...
... I don't really like the idea of Wakefield, Penny, and Smoltz in my 3, 4, and 5 slots... (even with Buchholz I am afraid)
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
Say bye bye to Buchholz, Boston fans.....
Posted by: tolo316 | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
i dont think the trade is gonna be that big
Posted by: mattdbrat1977 | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM

Posted by: sprtplyr999 | July 31, 2009 at 01:00 PM
Yeah, with a couple hours left until the trade deadline, Theo Epstein is scanning message boards instead of trying to make deals with other teams.
Posted by: Gstill45 | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
Wow...this is bringing out all the intelligent posts. V-mart is not old...he is 30. And Adrian too...? Where would you like them to put him, lowell, vmart, and youk?
Posted by: letsgoyankees | July 31, 2009 at 01:03 PM
Shapiro > Ricciardi
While the Indians are competitive again in 2011, the Jays will just be getting their supplemental picks for Doc.

I think you are wrong. They are just as good as the Yankees with V-Mart and better than the Rays. They will get in... wild card or AL East.
Posted by: Russell | July 31, 2009 at 01:05 PM
Lets make predictions:
Boston gets vmart
Cleveland get Bowden, Anderson.

Wouldn't he be replacing Ortiz before Lowell?
This is an amazing lineup!!
Ellsbury, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Youkilis, 1B
Bay, LF
Martinez, DH
Lowell, 3B
Drew, J, RF
Varitek, C

I can imagine this too. Theo, after consulting his vast scouting system, reams upon reams of reports, talking with his advisors and Shapiro, and meditating on this while staring at two WS rings, randomly decides to consult MLBTR comment sections JUST TO MAKE SURE.
Upon seeing your post, a light bulb goes on over his head. "He's ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! What was I THINKING?!"
You, good sir, have truly saved the Red Sox.
Anyway, this is a decent trade. It won't net them the division on its own but makes them a better team than they were before (depending on the price).
Posted by: ajhenry2383 | July 31, 2009 at 01:06 PM
I think this is a smaller trade. They better not deal Buchholz for V-mart... maybe if he could still catch, but he can't really do that.
I'd rather have AGon, but if v-mart was a cheaper alternative then there's always another year for Adrian. He'll only get cheaper.
Posted by: RedSoxFreak85 | July 31, 2009 at 01:06 PM

V-Mart and LaPorta to Boston
Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson to Cleveland

AWWWW POOR BABY, your favourite team has TWO switch hitting catchers with 13 and 15 homeruns. Cry me a river.
Halladay is NOT HAPPENING and was never close to happening, Gonzalez would have ended up with the whole Pawtucket team ending up in San Diego.
Red Sox fans are so bloody spoiled. SLAP YOURSELF IN THE FACE and take a look their friggin roster. If youre seriously crying about the acquisition of a guy like Martinez you seriously have problems.
Varitek is old and expensive, when he is gone, you have Martinez to step in and become the every day catcher, please tell me how that is a bad thing for the Red Sox and their fans?
Posted by: xethicx | July 31, 2009 at 01:06 PM
Wow, I am kind of surprised. It really seemed like they might try to keep him.
Wonder what the package will look like. Boston get desperate and trade Buchholz + Bowden? Doubtful. But Buchholz & Anderson might be a possibility.
Posted by: SuzysMan | July 31, 2009 at 01:07 PM
Actually Kulaid, Arroyo admitted to using Andro not steroids...completely different. Andro was legal at the time and not under any banned substance list whatsoever.
Posted by: BravesFan40 | July 31, 2009 at 01:07 PM
What a bloody joke. Theo is incompetent. A 31 year old former catcher is now our, what, 2nd out of 7 major league first basemen?
Posted by: Sean O | July 31, 2009 at 01:07 PM
"If it`s Buchholz`s so be it,but much more than that would suk!"
I don't think it will be Bucholz. For Lee maybe, but not V-Mart. V-Mart is hitting .284 this year and .278 last year. You don't give up Buch for that.
Posted by: Russell | July 31, 2009 at 01:08 PM
All of you talking about Westmoreland need to read up. He has clause in his contract saying the sox can't trade him. In fact he said when he got drafted he wouldn't sign with anyone but the sox.

Victor Martinez is a very good hitter who makes 6 million why on earth would the indians give him up for nothing?
Posted by: CosaOneNYC | July 31, 2009 at 01:09 PM
They (Red Sox) already turned down Bucholz for Martinez. It's going to be a smaller deal, maybe with more players.
This is a smart move. The addition of VMart takes them until Mauer is a free agent, you bet your ass that was the thought process behind this move.
Posted by: 4Qray | July 31, 2009 at 01:09 PM
Read the article idiots about arroyo. He said no one cheated. They used things that were not banned till 04 and 06.
Arod used anabolic steroids which were illegal at the time regardless.
Ortiz and Manny tested positive for nothing illegal at the time of use it seems. Glad to hear Ortiz is most likely clean (as far as the rules are concerned).
Posted by: Santana/Beckett FTW | July 31, 2009 at 01:09 PM
Has anyone noticed how V Mart has been playing this month? He batted .240 in June and .170 with 1 HR in July. Whatever the Indians got they won....
Posted by: Bmart05 | July 31, 2009 at 01:10 PM
"Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson"
They were not acquiring V-Mart and Lee, since traded to Philly..
That above packaging was about what they were probably offering up for Gonzalez, not VMart..

The only way Buchholz is in the deal is if it was a bigger deal that involved LaPorta as well....
So in other words, Buchholz won't be in the deal. Bowden + Anderson maybe? I'd buy that.
Posted by: bigpupp | July 31, 2009 at 01:11 PM
Shapiro HAS to get Buccholz or else he will be roasted again today in the local media. The fact that they came away w/ none of the blue chips that the Phillies were offering for Halladay has not gone over well here in Cleveland and Shapiro needs to hit a homerun here.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 01:11 PM
Why is anyone arguing about steroids? Who cares at this point? This is what we grew up with, I for one pretty much ignore it altogether, although even as a Sox fan, wish A-Rod wouldn't have been tainted so he could have a legitimate shot at Bonds's record*.

Whoopie... big deal. As a Sox fan I can honestly say that I could care less about V-Mart. Sure, he's decent but this sort of mid level acquisition isn't going to save us. It's about time Theo ponies up the dollars/prospects for a big name. We better not have given up too much for him.
I can only hope Theo has another deal in the works. C'Mon Halladay!

Justin Duchscherer scratched from his AAA start today - perhaps merits a mention in the next catch-all post?

As far as martinez goes. Why? I don't like this move by Theo, but I know Tek is overworked and could use some days off behind the plate... but don't trade Buchholz or anyone else of value for another 30+ catcher. NO matter how much I love having V-Mart for next few years.
Posted by: Santana/Beckett FTW | July 31, 2009 at 01:11 PM

Go to baseball-reference. com.
Go to Victor Martinez's page.
Click on his 2009 game log.
Click May 22nd and then click July 30th.
This will bring you up a screen of his numbers since May 22nd.
Boston fans, hope you're happy with what you see.

ricky h, i agree that's too much from the Sox on that trade.
xethicx, wanna see old overpayed catcher? How about posada. Tek only makes 5 mil this season
Posted by: turnthe2 | July 31, 2009 at 01:12 PM
Great move!! hes our catcher of the future!! Way better hitter than Tek and Kottaras!, As for the players in the trade im saying they are holding Buccholz back for a possible Adrian Gonzalez deal.!!
Posted by: ReDsOx4LiFe | July 31, 2009 at 01:12 PM
I would hate to see Anderson go
Posted by: rickyh | July 31, 2009 at 01:12 PM
Where will they play him? Not a fan of this acquisition. Not happy... if we give up Buchholz, why not give up a little more and get Halladay?
Posted by: soxfan03833 | July 31, 2009 at 01:12 PM
Catcher of the future? He's 31 and barely catches!
Posted by: Sean O | July 31, 2009 at 01:13 PM
Corey Brock mlb.com's Padres reporter just stated on MLB Network that he is also hearing that the Sox are close to acquiring V-Mart
Posted by: LHGrant3 | July 31, 2009 at 01:13 PM
okay so the fact that the indians asked for Buchholz straight up for V-Mart, then where are all of you coming up with thinking that its going to be Buchholz and others for V-Mart. Maybe others if there was LaPorta but i dont suspect 3 additional players. Stop thinking its going to be Buchholz and other prospects for V-Mart.
Posted by: yankeesuck0902 | July 31, 2009 at 01:13 PM
Why do people think that Adrian Gonzalez is what we need?
We already have a logjam at the corners. Why do you think we didn't pick up Mark Teixeira, who we could have had for a few extra million and no prospects? What we need isn't a long term solution; we need a holdover until 2011 (AKA the dawning of the Joe Mauer era).
Victor Martinez has one ability that Adrian Gonzalez doesn't: he can play catcher. He gives us extreme flexibility in the infield, effectively providing us with a constant stream of pinch hitters.
Adrian Gonzalez gives us a more expensive and less effective Mark Teixeira. We already passed on that position. Why would we give up a commodity far more valuable than cash for that?
Posted by: Hambriq | July 31, 2009 at 01:13 PM
"Shapiro > Ricciardi"

He got 4 decent players that will be MLB ready by next season. Now, he's about to add more. What are the Jays getting?
Posted by: UtleyFan | July 31, 2009 at 01:13 PM
Theo: "Dude, you're not getting Buchholz for Victor. It's just not happening. However, we'll give you Bowden for him."
Shapiro: "Cha! As if. I'm holding out"
Theo: "Ok, here's the thing, we're going to throw the kitchen sink for AGonz, and that means we'll have no interest in Victor. If you want to hold out, that's cool. But I don't see many other buyers for Victor. So now that I mentioned, it, not Bowden. We'll give you Manny Delcarmen, and you'll accept it because you have no other options, and we do."
Shapiro: "Ok, fine. I hate you Theo."
Theo: "Go get your shinebox."

Boston will NOT trade away one of their starters right now. Smoltz, Wake, and Penny in the 3-5 spot for the rest of the year is a downgrade...
They would have zero reason to include Buchholz in the deal.

Fine - but you don't have to be a dick about it.
I tend to agree with that poster - I think we could use another arm, rather than V-Mart.

VMart - hits Righties well but lefties poor
Tek - Hits righties poor but lefties better (albeit still not that well)
LaRoche - if he is not part of the deal, hits Righties well but lefties poor
Thus; the Sox improved 0 against left handed pitching and a good amount against right handed pitching.
What suprises me the most is all the comments for /or against this trade already when no one knows what the Sox gave up or what the Indians got in return.
For all we know the Sox did very well and gave up nothing; or vice versa.
Until we know though, its impossible to pass judgment.
the only thing to judge is; the Sox improved their lineup against Right Handed pitching.

Pablano, if that is true, Theo got fleeced. He could have had VMart staight up for Buchholz a week ago.

"If it`s Buchholz`s so be it,but much more than that would suk!"
I don't think it will be Bucholz. For Lee maybe, but not V-Mart. V-Mart is hitting .284 this year and .278 last year. You don't give up Buch for that.

what are you talking about? Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .252 so there goes your ridiculously stupid logic.

I doubt bucholz is involved i bet they r pulling the trigger on vmart now so they can include him in another deal for gonzo

Wont happpen
What will be interesting now though is that they have LARoche to figure out what to do with. I say him and another prospect get packaged together for a starter

OK, I say get A-Gon! Trade the prospects to the NL, not Cleveland.
I am in San Diego - A-GON! is the real deal...all that production with no protection!
