Cubs, Cards & Mets Asked About Lugo

The Cubs, Cardinals and Mets have shown some interest in Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo, according to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox will have to pay all of the $13.5MM remaining on Lugo's deal if they release him, so they're likely to pick up the vast majority of the contract in any trade.

ill take a bag of poo...

Of those teams, the Mets seem to have the greatest need considering how many injuries they have had among position players.

But would the Mets really waste trade commodities on Lugo when they badly need rotation upgrades, too?

We're not talking about anything actually valuable for Lugo, just a warm body in A ball.

So the Cubs asked about Hendry right after getting BJ Ryan? Wow, Jim Hendry sure is working hard to improve the Cubs.

Why look: here he is now, looking for his next big acquisition!

My 'roids are killing me. Do ya think the BoSox would give me a tube of prep H along with Lugo for a d-bag?

"just a warm body in A ball."

Or even recently warm.

don't the cubs have enough mediocre middle infielders? fontenot, theriot, blanco, baker, miles... their interest just doesn't make much sense to me, can someone fill me in as to what i'm missing here?

bdlugz:

joke - (n) something said or done to provoke laughter ; especially : a brief oral narrative with a climactic humorous twist b (1): the humorous or ridiculous element in something (2): an instance of jesting

And anyway, the frustrating part isn't even necessarily the picking through of scraps (as you said, what else can he do at this point?) but rather the frustration of being hamstrung by bad contracts and shifting ownership. The Cubs can't do squat.

Only if the Red Sox take Miles of our hands would I consider Lugo.

The Mets need offense, Lugo provides none. I say, no thanks.

OMAR!! Give them Mejia and Holt. Throw in Flores too! DO it now!!!

omar please no! GOD NO! LUGO IS HORRIBLE! If the greatest class of organization in the Red Sox want to unload him AND pay his salary rather than have him on their team, then it isnt good. I dont care if I have to run out there and play short stop for the rest of the season for free, dont trade for this bum!

"Only if the Red Sox take Miles of our hands would I consider Lugo."

Won't happen. Boston has cut ties with last discard on roster and -0- salary wastes now and not in the habit of adding players like BJ Ryan, Milton Bradley, Aaron Miles and Soriano. Cubs can keep them one and all.

Seriously, the Mets have Angel Berroa, Alex Cora, and Luis Castillo, on their roster right now for the middle infield. Are you really telling me that Julio Lugo isn't better then any of them (If not all of them?)

It's obvious that the Red Sox are going to be giving him away, it's not like the Mets are taking on any significant salary or giving away any REAL prospects, why not?

"what do you propose Hendry does??"

Resign.

"The Cubs, Cardinals and Mets have shown some interest in Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo"

Has to be better then Miles, and "free" (or pretty dang close to it) aint that bad of a price at all. This one might fall into our laps.

Haha. I wouldn't mind the braves gettin him and trading escobar for someone that can hit a homer once in a while. And I know that won't happen by the way.

I agree with aDoV. Castillo has been useful this year, but Berroa and Cora are both horrible. I wouldn't really mind taking a chance on Lugo. If he can continue like he has so far this year, hitting something like .280/.350 at the top of the order with some speed, until Reyes gets back, I'll take a chance with Lugo. He has been a horrible SS this year, but was actually pretty decent in 07 and 08.

Castillo right now is better than Lugo. He's got a 96 OPS+ vs. Lugo's 84. But Lugo offensively is definitely better than either Cora and Berroa. Further, Cora is playing right now with a torn ligament in his hand.

Sad to say that the Mets could really use Lugo.

I can see Lugo making sense for each of those three teams in certain circumstances. Really though he'd probably be the most help for the Cubs simply because they'd use him at second where his horrible defense would be mitigated a bit. Both the Cards and Mets would put him at short which would kill what little offensive value he has, which is mostly built around a modestly good .OBP. The switch to the NL and away from the AL East would bump him up a bit as well, meaning that as an NL second baseman he would likely be a descent player again. So.... he could help the Cubs.

Bdlugz summed it up best.

Lugo comes for nothing. So why not throw some 15th round pick from last year (a guy who has about a 5% chance of making big leagues) for a backup shortstop.

Getting out of Boston could be a huge lift off his shoulders (see Renteria's .293 and .332 BAs the 2 years after exiting Boston). Playing in Boston is brutal on hispanic and black players (not blaming the fans, its the media). Many come back to life after leaving (Renteria, Ramirez, Cabrera), others fade (Martinez, Vaughn). But none miss it.

Why not take flyer on Lugo, its a fire sale. At worst you have a backup infielder with speed for the league minimum. At best you have a decent leadoff hitter with speed and a below average glove at SS. There are worse out there.

question is.....will Minaya be dumb enough to pick up any of his salary.

Mets are desperate we know that.....and we know Minaya would sign anybody who has ever had anything close to a productive year (even if it were 10 years ago) to try and catch lightning in a bottle....so I'm wondering if Minaya would be that desperate to take on some of his contract.

If he does its official.....he is the worst GM in the game.

Wow, that is sad. You can replace Hendry in that perfectly and it would still work. The only issue present would be Hendry's absolute inability to take on any cash this year because of his prior spending sprees, but it would be my exact question about him any other time outside this small purchasing-period we are in.

Can someone please explain to me what anyone could've possibly seen in Julio Lugo to justify paying him $13,500,000 per year? Admittedly I don't follow the AL East very closely, but when Lugo played (briefly) for the Dodgers, he looked like a utility infielder at best. Has he actually made a significant impact on any team, ever?

To be fair, Lugo was wroth 8.7 WAR in 04 and 05. UZR had him rated as a very good shortstop. His bat wasn't much different in 06, but UZR didn't like his defense at all, so he was a 1.8 WAR player that year. Honestly, I could see why Theo made that move. Similar with Castillo. From 2002-2008, he was worth 2.8, 4.4, 3.4, 3.8, 2.1, and 2.4 WAR, and his defense was still good. Those deals look bad now, and maybe the extra years were more of a mistake then anything, but these guys definitely had value coming into their contract years.

Any sort of C level prospect will do. Honestly, that might be asking too much. Lugo's defense is gawd awful. Ever since his knee injury, his range has shrunk and he struggles to consistently make good throws to 1B. And while his bat is ok, he seems to get really hot for a game (a few 4 and 5 hit games this year) and then go cold for a week or two. Very inconsistent.

Don't expect to get much of a contribution from the guy. He really isn't a good bench guy either, as he can't really play anywhere else. He hasn't played anywhere but SS the past 2 years and his failed utility guy experience with the Dodgers is well documented.

fire omar, you know he will sign lugo you just know it..enough!

Hendry's made enough mistakes, don't add Lugo too our util in crew. We already have Miles and Baker

Ok this is my exact point. What the hell is WAR??? I say, WAR, what is it good for? I played college baseball for four years. I watch every single pitch of every single Mets game (not to mention a lot of other teams since I have that ill little Direct TV package now). I don't need obscure stats to tell me that Julio Lugo is GARBAGE. He was, at one point in his career, a decent player. You could have him at SS and be comfortable. Theo, however, overpayed him by a lot. Why do you want him on the Mets? What will he do for us?? Is he a significant improvement over Alex Cora? No. Is he any better than Luis Castillo? No. SO WHY DO YOU WANT HIM???? Because he has a good WAR. Real baseball players laugh at stat nerds because they don't need numbers to tell whether or not the guy can hit a curveball or whether or not he has good range. Derek Jeter had a great quote about stat nerds on Baseball Tonight the other day. Loved it. Go read your Bill James bible and yank it to Moneyball some more.
