Discussion: Trade Deadline Predictions

Just for fun, why don't we kick off the second half of the MLB season with a few trade deadline predictions? Here are three from me and I'm looking forward to reading yours in the comments below:

  • The Blue Jays will trade Roy Halladay to the Phillies for a group of prospects headed by Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor or Dominic Brown
  • The Nationals will trade Nick Johnson to salvage some value from their first baseman before he hits free agency. Johnson missed three quarters of last season, so he's not likely to rank high enough under the Elias rankings to bring the Nats compensation picks and they won't want to let him walk for nothing.
  • The A's will hold onto Matt Holliday as the market for pricey ($13.5MM), slumping (no homers since June 5th) players isn't strong.

What about Teahen?

The Jays will demand at least Drabek, Happ and Taylor. The Phillies won't budge. So, no deal.

I think the Jays will wait till the winter. Or they'll find another more willing partner like the Cards or Angels.

The Colorado Rockies will trade former #2 overall pick Greg Reynolds to the Baltimore Orioles along with 3B Garrett Atkins, as well as about $2M cash for CL George Sherrill.

Amaro says certain prospects are untouchable, presumably Drabek and maybe Taylor. Do you think he's just posturing, or will he eventually sacrifice one to get Doc?

Anyone else hear about the potential three team deal that would send Halladay to the Florida Marlins and Dan Uggla to San Francisco?

Yankees trade Jesus Montero Austin Jackson Zach McCallister Mark Melancon for Roy Halladay and Vernon Wells

Yankees trade George Kontos and a player to be named later for Ian Snell

Rotation: Doc, CC, AJ, Pettitte, Snell

7th-Joba
8th-Hughes
9th-Mo

Championship

Roy Halladay won't get traded to the Phillies because Amaro and the Phillies (the only team without a full-time statistician) are fooled by Happ's flukish first half.

Two years we'll all look back at how ridiculous the Phillies were.

Halladay goes to the Cardinals and Holliday stays with Oakland.

Halladay stays. Yunel stays.

OF Matt Holliday to St. Louis for OF John Jay and P Jason Motte.

3B Mark Teahen to San Francisco for P Jesse English and IF Manny Burriss

1B Nick Johnson to Boston for P Manny Delcarmen.

2B Freddy Sanchez to Minnesota for IF Steve Tolleson and P Jeff Manship

P Doug Davis to Milwaukee for P Effrain Nieves and P Lorenzo Cain

P Ian Snell and P Jesse Chavez to Cleveland for 1B Ryan Garko and 2B Josh Barfield

Rafeal Soraino stayes, Gonzo leaves. Maby braves get atkins for gonzo and try atkins at 2b?

caseyB,

no they wont. thats way too much. read the original post. drabek, taylor, OR brown plus other prospects.

or the braves could keep atkins at 3b, dfa anderson and move chipper to left.

Why does everyone believe the Happ is the next coming of Carlton ???

Two words, one name... Adam Eaton... He was over .500 for two seasons as well with the Phils...

Happ's k/9 have dropped significantly since joining the show and his bb/9 have increased... He isn't a groundball pitcher and his ratio is 35/47//18 with 10 per of his flyballs going out of the park... When your k/9 isnt 7.5-9/9, you aren't a ground ball pitcher ( which his ratio clearly shows at 35 %) and your still winning with a k/9 of 6.6, that means you are a fluke...

I love me some Happ... But for the millionth time... He projects as a back of the rotation guy... He wreaks of Kyle Kendrick...

or the braves could just throw in anderson in the trade for atkins and request salary relief.

I think we'll see a three team trade in the coming weeks. The question is who are the three teams? Reds, Nationals, Brewers/Phillies (if they don't land Halladay)?

Happ could also be discssed as the same as Kyle davies. Great start, then rockie finish.

At this point idc what team it is, i just wanna see a trade happen

Yanks fans are still smoking crack in the Bronx...

It's good to see it hasn't stopped them from hallucinating their championships because they sure as hell aren't getting one in real life this year...

Halladay = stays
Rios to the Mets for 2 middling prospects
Mark Teahen to the Reds for Homer Bailey straight up
Jose Guillen and cash to the Braves for PTBNL
Jose Valverde to the Yankees for Ian Kennedy and a PTBNL or low lvl. prospect
Jarrod Washburn to the Phillies for package centered around Mayberry Jr.
Chris Young to the Rangers for package around Chris Davis
Aubrey Huff and George Sherrill to the White Sox for a package around Poreda
Heath Bell to the Braves for Escobar and two middling prospects.
Mark Mulder signs with Brewers

The Blue Jays keep Halladay, the Phils try to get Davis from Ariz but it falls through.

Atlanta moves Escobar and Gonzalez in the same package for (Insert name here).

The Marlins acquire George Sherrill for (insert name here).

1.F. Sanchez to Giants for J. Sanchez and Noonan.

2.Snell and Grabow to Yanks for Coke, Kontos, and Betances.

3.Zack Duke to Texas for Moscoso.

4.Maholm and LaRoche to Braves for Escobar and Medelin.

the cardinals will get Halladay i predict... and the phillies will go another route.... the two pirates trades i got so far that will actually help them for the future are...
Pirates trade Ryan Doumit C and Zach Duke to Philadelphia for Kyle Drabek SP, Jason Donald SS, Andrew Carpenter SP, and Micheal Durant 1B... and Matt Capps and Ian Snell to Colorado for 2B Eric Young Jr, and P Casey Weathers...... As for F.Sanchez/Grabow/Ad.LaRoche/and J. Wilson i really dont know yet who will get them but i would like to see all moved...

And Pedro goes 10-0, ERA 1.14, K's9 15.3.

Before people give Matt Holliday predictions, please ask yourself:

"are the players talked about here worth more than 2 draft picks to Billy Beane, who hasnt had a pick of this kind since 1999?"

Thanks.

enchinga, I want Duke.

If I were the Braves, that is.

I don't know anything about this Drabek guy, how good is he?

Why would the Braves trade Yunel for Heath Bell?????? That doesn't make sense. I would guess if Yunel went to the Pads it would be in a package for A Gon.

I don't see Holliday being a type A. He is better off moving him and eating salary.

People say Drabek comparable to Jeff Perry, if that helps

Cardinals will win the halladay sweepstakes by giving, Josh Kinney, Brett Wallace, and Khalil Greene....anybody think that sounds legible??

Holliday is a type A, it doesnt matter a whole lot what the numbers are, like orlando cabrera is type A too, but the A's already had a deal in place when he signed not to offer him arby at the end of the year,

Jarrod Washburn to the Dodgers for Josh Lindblom and Kyle Russell.

bravesbacker..If the Braves want to have any shot whatsoever of landing AGon, Yunel is not even close to what it is going to start to cost. Jason Heyward or Tommy Hanson would need to be in the package for the Pads to not hang up the phone.

Jose Guillen and cash to the Braves for PTBNL

This makes sense how? If we're taking on a big contract like that for not much in a trade it should be alex rios

CAN WE STOP ALL PADS,BRAVES, A-GON STUFF PLEASE? IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

Prediction: Despite hype, no major move.
-Riccardi pulls Halladay off the table at last minute after no one offers more than 1 elite prospect.
-Holliday news soars in the last couple of days but ultimate no one offers 2 elite prospects.
-Washburn stays put. Mariners make only minor moves.
-Davis to the Phillies for a better prospect than Davis is worth.
-Atkins to the Sox heat up until Rockies demand Bard or Delcarmen plus pitching prospect in the deal.
-Vasquez and Esocbar stay put.
-Sox make a phone call about V-Mart only to hear Buccholz, Anderson, and Bard are only a starting point. Other teams hear similar news about Cliff Lee.
-John Grabow to the yanks for an ok prospect.

I think the Phillies make the deal for Halladay using Dom. Brown or Taylor, Happ, Donald, and Marson.

I think Drabek and Knapp will stay.

If possible the Phillies might go after a guy like Washburn too...they are built to win this year and next and they will go for it all.

"I don't see Holliday being a type A. He is better off moving him and eating salary."

Type A is based on 2yr stats, so he will be Type A because of the year he had last year.

Headed by Drabek, Taylor or Brown? huh? Try all 3 of them and more. This is the clear cut best pitcher in the game.

I know Yunel wouldn't get A Gon. That wasn't my point. I was just saying that if we made a deal with the Pads involving Yunel, it would be in a package for A Gon, not Heath Bell.

"Before people give Matt Holliday predictions, please ask yourself:

"are the players talked about here worth more than 2 draft picks to Billy Beane, who hasnt had a pick of this kind since 1999?""

Will Billy Beane be happy with the Yankees 3rd round pick after they once again buy 3 of the 4 top free agents?

- The Cardinals swoop in and trade for Halladay at the last minute

- The Braves make no deals at all, preferring to stand pat instead

"Prediction: Despite hype, no major move."

Agreed. Everyone has needs and nobody seems willing to give up anyone useful. Especially in this economy.

Halladay probably stays put, Phils wont want to send Drabek, Happ + to Toronto.

Holliday 100% stays in OAK. 1/2 year rental with his stats, no way Billy Beane can get 2 1st round type prospects.

Jays can't move Wells or Rios (Mets won't want Rios now that they have Francoeur/Beltran/F.Martinez for 2010 OF.)

Doug Davis to Brewers for 1 or 2 decent prospects.

Pirates trade LaRoche, Sanchez, Grabow and Capps, Wilson only if they pay most of contract.

AGonz to Boston for Buchholz, Bowden and Anderson.

"Headed by Drabek, Taylor or Brown? huh? Try all 3 of them and more. This is the clear cut best pitcher in the game."

Not gonna happen...Jays don't need more outfield prospects, they have Wells, Rios, Lind, and Snider for a long time. One will be enough. They would want a SS (Donald), a catcher (Marson), a top 25 prospect (Brown/Taylor), and major league ready pitcher (Happ)...possibly another young pitching prospect in Carrasco, Savery, Worley, or Carpenter to sweeten the deal.

They Jays would get more if teams were allowed to negotiate, so I don't understand why they won't. Teams will give up more knowing that they have Halladay for 4 years, rather than just 1.5.

"AGonz to Boston for Buchholz, Bowden and Anderson."

I could see that...Padres love their pitching. They should throw in Ellsbury and more and take Peavy while their at it, haha.

Ok, decided to have some fun with mine

First, the realistic one
“The Blue Jays will trade Roy Halladay to the Phillies for a group of prospects headed by Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor or Dominic Brown.”
Borrowing that since it is correct. Do think it is Drabek AND Taylor or Brown though – not just one of the three if that is what you mean

Freddy Sanchez is traded to the Giants for a package of players headlined by Ehire Adrianza – everyone scratches their heads.

Nick Johnson will not be dealt – Washington will want too much and fail.

The Indians and Braves work out a deal involving Escobar and Tommy Hanson for Choo and Peralta (plus prospects on either side) – everyone is blown away.

Texas trades for Matt Holliday and a pitcher, sending Elvis Andrus and a Catcher in return. The launching pad of a park once again makes Holliday look like a baseball God. They then ship one of their current OFers to the Reds for Homer Bailey who pitches well down the stretch for them.

The Cubs bankruptcy paperwork is filed in the next couple days, meaning we cant add anyone at all before the deadline :*(

I believe Halladay goes to the Cards. Holliday stays put in Oakland. The Pirates have a huge firesale. The Braves land Rios and Scutaro out of Toronto. The RedSox get Atkins. The Giants land Dye from the White Sox for Sanchez. Davis goes to Milwaukee. Phillies get Bedard from Seattle.

Those are my insane predictions but some could happen most likely this will be the least eventful trade deadline we have seen in awhile.

suzysman, braves aren't trading Hanson, especially with Choo's military commitment hanging over him. Sizemore would have made it more realistic, but still not happening

If the Yankees can beat the Red Sox this year, say, 1/2 the remaining games left (which, I admit, is perhaps a bit of a stretch), I don't see why the Yankees couldn't win it all. The team they can't beat, the Angels, I don't see qualifing for the postseason. Give me a good few reasons. If they add a quality starter, like a Bannister type, why not? It's fine to say that, but give me reasons, other than A-Rod, which I will give you 8 days of the week.

My guesses, here we are. It is important to note that I think there will be LOTS of overpaying, due to the number of clubs in the hunt this year.

OAK trades SS Olando Cabrera to BOS for P Fabian Williamson and OF Jason Place.

MIN aquires IF Adam Kennedy from OAK for IF Steven Tolleson and P Brian Duensing.

NOTE: This move would be done instead of a Freddy Sanchez move.

PIT trades 2B Freddy Sanchez in exchange for 3B Jesus Guzman and P Clayton Tanner.

SF trades P Henry Sosa to BAL for OF Luke Scott. (This sounds terrible, I know, I'm just speculating; huge Baltimore win here, if it were to be).

CHC (N) trades RP Andrew Cashner to ARI for SP Jon Garland

"P Doug Davis to Milwaukee for P Effrain Nieves and P Lorenzo Cain" I agree with this, in full.

No Halladay, you may ask? I say wait until the winter, sadly.

P Russ Springer from OAK to SRL for P Jaime Garcia OR 3B David Freese.

RP Cla Meredith to DET for 1B Jeff Larish and a PTBNL.

Cleveland trades RP Kerry Wood to NYY for P Wilkins de la Rosa, 2B Manuel Banuelos, and C Kevin De Leon.

Again, not what I think is fair, but what price will be paid.

F. Sanchez and 1-2 mil to the Cubs for Fontenot and a PTBNL

Halladay doesnt go anywhere...

Rios to the Mets for 2 middle prospets and a PTBNL.

The Phillies to me wont give up Happ or Drabek. JA Happ has a 2.90 era and is 6-0. I know halladay is better then happ, but happ is young and cheap. The phillies have a problem next year cause they have only hamels, happ, and moyer under contract next year. Moyer may retire and they need to resign Blanton. So if we get halladay we need to lock him up for 5 years and same with blanton cause after this year we have no depth

"F. Sanchez and 1-2 mil to the Cubs for Fontenot and a PTBNL"

Not in a chance in hell....

Blanton is not a FA next year...he is still under control for more year. He'll go to arbitration for about 6-7 mill.

AZ RHSP Dan Haren to the Angles for RHSP Ervin Santana, 2B Sean Rodriguez, and a prospect. Haren extended.

The Halos are probably more keen on the lower profile Haren to Halladay and his sinker for their ballpark.

Halladay could have similar scenario to Randy Johnson of 1997. With an NL team involved by the trade deadline, the Yankees or the Red Sox bidding war will end up a bluff. Riccardi is too smart to allow for that to happen and may wait until the off-season instead. Besides, it's foolish for any team to accept his trade unless extended, with the Stankees [Steinbrenner + Yankees] $$$way dead-end after 2010 lurking.

I can see the Giants going after F. Sanchez, but I dont think J. Sanchez is worth giving up just for him. And the Giants will NOT get Teahen.
Holliday stays
Halladay stays
Giants will not go after Nick Johnson.
I can also see Atkins going to the Red Sox

"F. Sanchez and 1-2 mil to the Cubs for Fontenot and a PTBNL"

"Not in a chance in hell...."

Really? You dont think the Pirates would be willing to move Sanchez and his 8 mil salary for someone they can keep for a while? It will be the best deal the Pirates get and they will take it...just like that lopsided aramis ramirez trade...

Dan Haren isnt getting moved, especially for someone who has arm problems...It will take a Halladay deal, minus one top prospect, for the Dbacks to move him. Probably Brandon Wood and 2B Sean Rodriguez and another 1 or 2 middle tear pitchers

"AZ RHSP Dan Haren to the Angles for RHSP Ervin Santana, 2B Sean Rodriguez, and a prospect. Haren extended."

Haren extended? What, 5 years below market value isnt a long enough contract?

"suzysman, braves aren't trading Hanson, especially with Choo's military commitment hanging over him. Sizemore would have made it more realistic, but still not happening"

Just watch and see dude ;)

Options for Halladay seem like LA, PHI, MIL or STL. To LA for Scott Elbert and a couple other pieces could make sense.

Also see Snell as cheaper option for LA.

Nick Johnson to ATL, for scraps back. The Casey Kotchman experiment should be ended.

Agree A-Gon is not moving. That is silly, he fits that market, and his brother is there too.

Also could see the Brewers make a move out of nowhere like JJ Hardy shipped out.

Don't see Vazquez moving

Angels will be heavy on bullpen help.

Rolen to Boston.

ok good i thought blanton was a free agent. So that leaves us with blanton, hamels, happ, moyer UGGGGH. Trade drabek, carassco, donald, taylor for halladay if that dont do it then NO DEAL. Then Lock halladay up for 5 years.

I'm gonna try my best here, I predicted one trade at least, DeRosa for Perez.

Doug Davis to Brewers for 2 average prospects once the Dbacks cave in and realize Davis is not worth a ton.

Halladay stays put, no team is willing to pay the price in prospects.

Matt Holliday and Brad Ziegler to the Marlins for Ryan Tucker, Emilio Bonifacio, and Gaby Sanchez and another pitcher.

Adam LaRoche to the Giants for Jonathan Sanchez

Freddy Sanchez and John Grabow to the Twins for Anthony Swarzak and two other prospects.

Jason Frasor to the Dodgers for Chin-Lung Hu

Bobby Jenks to the Rockies for Ryan Spillborghs

Russ Springer to the Tigers for cash and fringe prospect.

Carl Pavano and Rafael Betancourt to the Rangers for 2 prospects, Dustin Nippert maybe?

I think the Braves will stay put with what they have. Phillies will try to get a pitcher, not sure what will happen of that. Mets will stay put or make a small move. Pirates and Athletics will be the big sellers. Houston Astros will still buy something, probably a starting pitcher.

"Really? You dont think the Pirates would be willing to move Sanchez and his 8 mil salary for someone they can keep for a while? It will be the best deal the Pirates get and they will take it...just like that lopsided aramis ramirez trade..."

These are not Littlefield's Pirates anyomre. You can think whatever you want to, but I would bet good money this trade will not go down.

...Correction: with Haren signed until 012 with 013 a buyout option, extension won't be necessary. As the D-Backs would demand MLB SP compensation under their control, the deal works for both ends. The D-Backs with a potentially dominant SP and the Halos with a proven elite and ideal SP added to each rotation.

i think the phillies will get halladay because they have the right prospects and enough money to get him if the phillies get him i think its a ticket to the world series

Regardless of what team halladay goes to, or if he stays in Toronto, he is going to want to test the free agent waters after next year.

Ty Wigginton to the Phillies for prospects.

"F. Sanchez and 1-2 mil to the Cubs for Fontenot and a PTBNL"

lmfao. Seriously? This is the best you could come up with? Fontenot is hitting .230/.307/.358 and is 29 years old. Sanchez is hitting .316/.356/.478 and is only 2 years older. That would be a total downgrade, and the Pirates could do a hell of a lot better for Sanchez. Just because it's the Pirates we're dealing with here doesn't mean all of their players aren't worth anything. The Pirates would be better off just keeping Sanchez.

"MIN aquires IF Adam Kennedy from OAK for IF Steven Tolleson and P Brian Duensing." Posted by: UnbiasedYankee

"2B Freddy Sanchez to Minnesota for IF Steve Tolleson and P Jeff Manship" Posted by: RoyalsRetro

As a Twins fan, I would sure hope that Bill Smith says DEAL! in about two seconds with either of these trades. Both of these trades are lopsided in favor of the Twins.

We'd be picking up a very good 2B in either deal without giving up very much. Tolleson is an okay prospect at best and Manship/Duensing are back of the rotation pitchers.

I'd think that Pittsburgh or Oakland would want Alexi Casilla or Matt Tolbert or even Luke Hughes instead of Tolleson if they want an infielder with major league and/or AAA/AA experience.

Han-Ram3:
You mean to tell me that if you're AZ's GM you would not take Santana?! I'm not sure that Reagins or I would even do it. But under the circumstances, the chance to enhance their starting rotation with an arm conducive to their elements and the backup if Lackey walks, that's the sacrifice whether I like it or not.

"Bobby Jenks to the Rockies for Ryan Spillborghs"

haha. no way White Sox make this trade. Jenks won't go to Rockies because of Street being there.

And I think Sox get Pie+prospects Fields and Anderson. Then Dotel, Egbert, and Richard is traded to the Angels for Brandon Wood and Rich Thompson. Wood moves to 3rd, Beckham to 2nd, and Getz to the bench. This helps the Sox out now and in the future. I would love to see the Sox make these trades.
Thoughts?

Pie+prospects for Fields and Anderson*

"Matt Holliday and Brad Ziegler to the Marlins for Ryan Tucker, Emilio Bonifacio, and Gaby Sanchez and another pitcher."

Not even close to enough for Oakland. Tucker probably ends up in the bullpen, Bonifacio is clearly nothing more than a utility man, Sanchez isn't much of an upgrade on Daric Barton and others, and I doubt you had much in mind for the other pitcher.

Holliday is still a good LF and Ziegler is a good, cheap bullpen piece. You would need to include far more.

"Bobby Jenks to the Rockies for Ryan Spillborghs"

Jenks is a reasonably priced, consistently good closer. He's not elite but he's definitely in the next tier, and he could land the Sox far more than Spilborghs, who's solid but nothing special.

If Jenks gets moved then Thornton becomes the closer. I would assume. So the Sox would need a LOOGY. If Jenks were to go (I doubt it), I'd like it to be to FLA Marlins for Tankersley, VandenHurk, and lower level prospects. Tankersley becomes the LOOGY and VandenHurk becomes a starter down the road. Combine this with my other trades and we got a World Series contender for 2010 and on.

*****the Phillies (the only team without a full-time statistician)*****

And reigning World Champions.

I can understand if Jenks is too much for Spillborghs, I thought he might be but I threw it out there because it would satisfy each teams needs very well.

I think Dotel for Spillborghs or Smith may work as well. I was having a hard time trying to figure out which relief pitcher would come to the Rockies.

Also, I don't think Oakland will get many great offers for Holliday, and Beane's been making some questionable moves lately, so I wouldn't put it past them. I don't know a lot about Florida's system aside from Stanton and Coghlan, so maybe there's better guys they can trade. Bonifacio is not a Beane player, if Coghlan or Dominguez are involved, i'm sure Billy would pull the trigger quickly.

Let's not all forget that its Halladay that has the final word.

He has openly said he wants to win now...

The Phillies have what the Jays want, but MORE importantly, the Phillies have what HALLADY want... A World Championship Ring and a Great chance to repeat in the next coming years. He will also comfort in knowing he has the NL's BEST Offense batting behind him and top 3 in defense, if not top 2.

Cardinals will try to get him, but in the end, it will be the Phillies that offer the better prospects and for Halladay, a team set to win it all in the coming years.

The Cardinals play in the toughest division with the Brewers and Cubs right there fighting it out.

The Phillies are the better option for Halladay to win NOW. Plain and simple.

Get er Done Philly!!!!

(SS) Donald / (C) Marson / (P) Drabek / (Of) Taylor

That "should" be enough - if not, yes... throw in (P) Happ

"I think Dotel for Spillborghs or Smith may work as well. I was having a hard time trying to figure out which relief pitcher would come to the Rockies."

I would trade Dotel for Seth Smith in a second, even if he can't play center field.

"Bonifacio is not a Beane player, if Coghlan or Dominguez are involved, i'm sure Billy would pull the trigger quickly."

You never included Dominguez. If Beane could get a top 3B prospect like Dominguez, as well as some other parts, then moving Holliday/Ziegler sounds far more plausible.

"If the Phillies got Halladay you are talking about a GREAT 1-2 punch (perhaps one of the best 1-2 combos in the game) in Halladay and Hamels. I would give up any prospects for him.

Justin Duchscherer is coming back very soon and wants to be a SP but the A's are saying they are going to put him in the pen.....just a forgotten name who was excellent last year and an all star. Could be a useful trade piece for a team looking for arms.

Wow!! I'm glad to see that Yankee fans are still whinning for more help and think that they will come out of a deal for Halladay with Phil Hughes and Hand Joba well what has Toronto said they want??? ML ready pitching so you would have to assume that the deal would have to start with one of the Two and another thing why the big fuss over a potential season and a half rental?? Why give up all these prospects for potentially nothing getting this guy does not guarantee your team will rise above every team out there of course he helps your chances but I think they are asking too much in return to chance it.

Justin Duchscherer has yet to prove he can stay fully healthy for an entire season you cant build around a guy who misses substantial time as a Reliever and hope he stands up as a Starter

"Justin Duchscherer is coming back very soon and wants to be a SP but the A's are saying they are going to put him in the pen.....just a forgotten name who was excellent last year and an all star. Could be a useful trade piece for a team looking for arms."

He would have to come back and excel pretty quickly to build up any trade value as an impending FA coming off a major injury.

Landing any talent for him would be nice at this point.

Smith has been incredibly valuable for the Rockies this year, so I don't see him being moved. But Spilly is fair game.

I could potentially see the Rockies kicking the tires with Toronto about Halladay. He is a Colorado native, so it could be a fit. They also do have the pieces to make it work, Hector Gomez, Michael McKenry, Jhoulys Chacin may be attractive (although I wouldn't give up all of them).

I would like to see no team make a dumb trade and build around what they have alot of parody right now and I am sure I will be bashed but the Nationals have some key peices to start building a loaded team within a few years they just have to open up the wallet to make it happen

since yankee fans make absurd trades ill say Lincecum for Bard Penny and Saito...of course this is a joke so keep the bashing down

If the Giants want to have any chance at winning the wild card let alone the whole division they will need to acquire a new first baseman or second baseman, preferably both.

Theres really only two second baseman that seem plausible: Freddy Sanchez and Dan Uggla

First Baseman: LaRoche, Huff, Johnson, Konerko.

Ideally we would deal Sanchez and and a B-B+ prospect fro Dan Uggla

and say Merkin Valdez and Nick Noonan for Huff.

If the Braves make any move it should be Gonzalez for a rental OF or 1B, maybe a guy under contract for 2010, but nothing beyond that. You don't want someone to block Heyward, Freeman and Cody Johnson. Maybe a 3 team trade for Willingham or Huff. Before you all say who is Cody Johnson he was a 2nd round pick a few years ago. He is 20 years old and at the plate is a clone of Adam Dunn, but makes slightly better contact. On the bases and in the field is compares to a guy like Vernon Wells.

"He would have to come back and excel pretty quickly to build up any trade value as an impending FA coming off a major injury."

I think Duchscherer signs a 1 year "prove yourself" deal to stay in Oakland. Reason: Oakland is one of the best pitcher development teams and they play in a pitchers' park. And it gives the A's pen depth, and the ability to trade Wuertz easily.

"My guesses, here we are. It is important to note that I think there will be LOTS of overpaying, due to the number of clubs in the hunt this year."

I have to agree with this. There are so many quasi-contenders and very few teams who are truly out of it. You're also going to see a few trades where the team trading away the vet eats salary to increase its leverage in trades.

"CHC (N) trades RP Andrew Cashner to ARI for SP Jon Garland"

scribbletone is very rage induced. (j/k)

"CHC (N) trades RP Andrew Cashner to ARI for SP Jon Garland"

"scribbletone is very rage induced. (j/k)"

No, he is probably hugging the toilet.

I will tell you, if the DiamondBacks eat the full salary and we have to put Harden or someone on the DL. And after the moves we made this past offseason?

Well, like I said, probably hugging the toilet knowing that if there was ever a GM who might just do it... :*(

My predictions. Since there is only one top pitching talent on the market and so many contenders in need of pitching, mediocre pitchers and all relievers will be immensely overvalued.

The Mariners are buyers, not sellers.

There will be a 3 team deal of some sort.

The A's release one or more of their dead weight vets.

Since Peavy vetoed the Sox trade, the White Sox acquire Roy Halladay, for a package that contains both Gordon Beckham and Tyler Flowers, along with a good chunk of the Sox' farm system.

The Phillies, after missing out on Roy Halladay, send Carlos Carrasco to the DBacks for Doug Davis and Jon Rauch.

Victor Martinez is traded to the Red Sox for a package that, while it does not have Buchholz, has both Bowden and Masterson, along with other pitching prospects who are further away from the bigs. Shapiro knows that its much smarter to fill 2 rotation spots with guys with frontline upside than go for Buchholz.

Matt Holliday is traded to an NL Central team for a package which is worth much, much more than 2 draft picks. The A's might eat salary.

Josh Willingham is traded to Atlanta, as Frank Wren senses an opportunity to seize a weak division.

Nick Johnson is traded to the Angels, Aubrey Huff to the Giants.

Freddy Sanchez is traded to the Twins.

Rauch, Grabow, Springer, Sherrill, and Rafael Betancourt are the relievers traded. Most are moved via waivers, with the exception of Rauch.

The Cubs acquire Adam Kennedy (they would pay him prorated league min) for (probably a pitching prospect) and release Aaron Miles.

Oh. The Yankees and the Rays both trade for bullpen help. No names attached though.

If Kansas City made Zack Greinke available, what do you think they would get? Keep in mind that he is signed through 2012 at 09:$3.75M, 10:$7.25M, 11:$13.5M, 12:$13.5M and is only 25 years old.

I like the Phillies with a package of Kyle Drabek (RHSP), Lou Marson (C), Michael Taylor (OF) and Antonio Bastardo (LHSP).

I also like the Giants with Buster Posey (C), Madison Bumgarner (LHSP), John Bowker (OF) and Jonathan Sanchez (LHSP).

Do you think KC would ever trade their #1 player?

Melonis, you're predicting one helluva trade deadline. If it's that exciting, then I'll be happy, even if I'll be mad if the Halladay deal you propose goes through.

"CHC (N) trades RP Andrew Cashner to ARI for SP Jon Garland"

scribbletone is very rage induced. (j/k)"

You got that one right. I'd probably just start breaking random objects if that happened.

Cashner has some major upside.

"Since Peavy vetoed the Sox trade, the White Sox acquire Roy Halladay, for a package that contains both Gordon Beckham and Tyler Flowers, along with a good chunk of the Sox' farm system."

What?

Beckham and Flowers are pretty much the whole top of the farm system, along with Danks, Viciedo, Poreda and Richard.

If we have to give up four of those six guys in order to land Halladay, then honestly I would rather not.

Build around those guys, move Dye/Jenks/Konerko, and try to win in 2010 or maybe even 2011.

Although the thought of a Halladay-Buehrle-Floyd-Danks playoff rotation is giving me flashbacks of Buehrle-Garcia-Garland-Contreras, and of course we have the great Scott Podsednik leading off again.

Yeah, I'd still be furious if they make that deal.

"The Phillies, after missing out on Roy Halladay, send Carlos Carrasco to the DBacks for Doug Davis and Jon Rauch."

Now that would be funny. Carrasco is probably almost as good as Davis right at this moment.

"Do you think KC would ever trade their #1 player?"

Probably not. I think that they signed Greinke to keep Greinke. The one logical Dayton Moore move.

Yeah, I took into consideration GM profiles, patterns, and habits into consideration when listed these trades.

As much as I respect the Cubs (I rooted for them to win the WS, in the postseason, last year, that is), I sadly could see a garbage move like that coming around this page. It would be literally, a byrn to the Cubs franchise.

Frankly, Hendry is one of the current GMs who should not have his job.

My others? Kenny Williams (on occasion; varies), Mark Shapiro (who I respected greatly before this year), and Ed Wade.

I realize Cashner's potential; flamethrowing closer or set-up guy. Why Hendry would do it is beyond me, but then again, this is Jim Hendry. Offseason Recap Express: 2008/9 Cubs:

1) Trading JOSE CEDA for the overrated Gregg.

2) Letting fan FAVORITE Kerry Wood go, who is much more established in a closer's role. Not to mention, this move would have made more baseball sense.

3) Trading DeRosa away for 3 [basically] no-name prospects with all DeRosa could do; a perfect role guy. Even a very useful player for starting, due to his versatility.

UPDATE on those prospects:

Stevens blew a game against the Koreans with a errant pickoff throw (above average numbers in AAA, recent callup to the Show), Archer has looked mixed (in A ball); 2.90 FIP, too high of BB/9 (5.81!), and .293 BABIP, Gaub is awful, appearing in only 3 games this year for Iowa, with a 6.58 FIP, but has looked much better in AA. He's getting old, too, at 24.

3.1)Because of 3, Shapiro trades DeRosa to the Cards, making it even worse- the Cubs worst enemy! Ouch, I feel for you Cubs fans; you deserve better.

melonis, I see no way Hendry releases the corpse of Aaron Miles; thereby not trading for Kennedy. He is attached to him like Giradi (or Cashman) is with Cody Ransom. These are players who completely don't belong in the majors, yet the heads think they are fantastic players... I don't get it.

"3.1)Because of 3, Shapiro trades DeRosa to the Cards, making it even worse- the Cubs worst enemy! Ouch, I feel for you Cubs fans; you deserve better."

Thanks. But that one doesnt bite nearly as hard as it will come September 1st when the PTBNL is known. When it is Todd or someone comparable on top of Perez for 1/2 a year of the guy we gave them almost for free. Well, it will be an quick smile for the Cards loosing those players, then my hand going through the wall knowing we should have gotten much more then we did.

The Phillies won't part with J.A. Happ and that is why Roy Halladay will not be a Phillie.

scribbletone-

Yes, I'm predicting a rather crazy deadline. Plenty of quasi contenders coupled in with a weak FA market. A lot of those smaller deals will probably be waivers though, when teams get desperate. Honestly, that might be too much for one deadline. I think all 3 of the big names (Halladay/Holliday/VMart) get traded though.

The Halladay thing was more because the White Sox already tried to trade for Peavy, and KW is one of the most aggressive GMs in the game, and isn't afraid to chop the top off his system. It just makes too much sense in a system that is pretty damn shallow pitchingwise but deeper positionwise.

UnbiasedYankee-

I like Shapiro as a GM. A lot of the Tribe's 2009 struggles were rather unexpected coming into the season (Carmona, Wood, Laffey, etc.). He's still one of the stronger GMs in the game. Now I have no mercy for Hendry though. If we're talking bad GMs, Dayton Moore has to be up there though.

Braves SHOULD trade vasquez and get a big bat. Dont know if cruz is available, but that would be wonderful and I know Texas needs pitching...
