Elias Rankings

At the end of each season, The Elias Sports Bureau ranks all MLB players numerically based on a bunch of stats.  Every player is categorized in one of five position groups and by league.  The rankings cover a two-year time period.  They are used to determine whether free agents are Type A, Type B, or neither.  If you'd like a reminder on how draft pick compensation works, read up here.

Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings last year.  Eddie's incredible work was made possible in large part due to information provided by ESPN's Keith Law.  Eddie is now providing the rankings exclusively to MLB Trade Rumors.  Today's snapshot covers the beginning of the 2008 season through July 11th of 2009.  So the rankings will obviously change over the next few months.

How the heck is Padilla an A while Lackey is a B?

Dodgerbono, I imagine because Elias takes into account playing time, and since Lackey missed significant time this year, it probably hurt his status.

Nice to see a post from Tim, by the way.

Carlos Lee scores higher than Pujols? Troy Glaus ahead of Hanley Ramirez? What combination of stats are they looking at?

I would really like a healthy Lackey in LA.

Anyone that ranks Carlos Lee ahead of Albert Pujols, is a moron. What stats are they looking at anyway? Who strikes out the most, has the least hits, time on DL, time on the bench, most fielding eras, etc is the best player.

LMAO @ O-Cab still Type A. He's one of the worst players in baseball right now. Yeah, Elias Rankings are outdated and archaic and need to go.

So, Tim, I must ask, how's the wife and baby doing? :)

"What stats are they looking at anyway?"

Has there ever been a year when people haven't been shocked by the rankings?

Classy as always, you should tell everyone how your doing.

I dont think I am the only who misses you on the delete button.

They needs to go by ERa+ and OPS+..

I mean its not perfect but the current method is garbage.

Sergio Romo, set-up man - Type A.
Brian Wilson, closer - Type B.

Hey guys. Thanks for asking. We have a five day-old little girl, and she and mom are doing great. She is very healthy, based on the volume of her cries!

I'll be hovering around the site a tad this week, and probably a lot on July 30-31.

Be prepared for the high volume of poop too!

:P

Wow, Ichiro is a type B? What kind of garbage is this?

tim,

glad everyone is well. As a father of 3 the only thing i can suggest is get sleep when you can.

Hey Tim,

You and Eddie need to get your sites and logos watermarked into the next batch. I've already seen these a bunch of places completely unattributed. This is great work and credit should be given for doing it (and sponsoring it, I assume).

Really quick, I don't have access to the spreadsheet at work, but I wanted to try and clarify why Carlos Lee is above Albert Pujols and why Troy Glaus could be above Hanley Ramirez (I'll have to check the latter, that one seems like a programming error)

It is important to note that Carlos Lee and Albert Pujols are not ranked against eachother. Albert Pujols gets his score from comparing his BA, PA, SLG, RBI, and HR to other 1B to see how he ranks. Carlos Lee gets his score from comparing his BA, PA, SLG, RBI, and HR to other OF to see how he ranks. The scores from different positions are grouped together, but they aren't ranked against eachother!!!!! This was especially true when Aubrey Huff was leading the AL 1B/OF/DH. Huff's stats in no way compared with Tex, Cabrera, Youkilis, or Morneau, but the DH crew has particularly weak numbers, while the 1B crew is very strong. Therefore, DH's in the American League will have inflated rankings.

This also explains why Orlando Cabrera is Type A. How many shortstops currently on American League teams have been starting since the beginning of 2008?

Boringname,
That's a good idea.

Tim, can you embed the spreadsheet on here without including the link? That way all of the traffic is coming here instead of to Scripd? I was able to do this on blogger, but I'm not sure if you can do it here.

Padilla's got an inflated winning percentage. Lackey's got something like 90+ days on the DL... You stop getting proration after 60 days. On top of that, he's stunk this year.

Just checked on the Glaus situation. Despite missing the whole 2009 season so far, Glaus leads NL 3B with homers (including the injury adjustment), is second to Aramis in RBI's, leads in fielding percentage, and is third (to Aramis and Chipper) in OBP.

Expect his counting stats to take a significant hit with every day he spends on the DL from here on out.

Also, remember that Glaus's numbers are not being compared to Hanley, just his standing relative to others at his position.

This a load of crap...just like evry entry Howard megdal writes. :0

Eddie- you rock! Great information on the rankings.
We Tiger fans are keenly watching Polanco's ranking. Isn't it ironic that, if he plays well and bumps himself up to Type A status, he could burn himself on the free agent market this winter. I get the feeling that the Tigers would like him back, but just for a year.

Disregard the 1B/OF/DH rankings in the ones above. I noticed and found an error with the way OBP was being calculated. Use these instead.
