Dodgers Looking For A Reliever

Diamond Leung notes that during an interview with Seth Everett and Jim Duquette on Sirius XM Radio, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said that his top priority is adding a bullpen piece.

“If we’re assuming that everybody’s healthy from here on out, I would say that our top priority would be a bullpen piece, especially somebody with veteran stature. I think that would be No. 1. If we can find a starter that’s obviously better than who we have starting now, that would be No. 2. The number of names that have been tossed around out there that we’ve made contact with clubs that would definitively make our starting rotation better…it’s a very, very short list. It might be a longer list in the bullpen. We’re concentrating on both, and hopefully will be able to do one if not both between now and July 31.”

Colletti also said that the price for Roy Halladay may be too high, but didn't rule out potentially pursuing the righthander. Speaking on Sportscenter earlier this evening, ESPN's Buster Olney noted that the Dodgers had two scouts watch Halladay's start in Tampa yesterday.

Comments

hey! can you post some names of potential relievers that may be on the Dodgers short list?

Tim posted something like this back in April but I'm wondering if his list has changed now that the season has progressed.

Also, what starters are reasonable for the Dodgers to pursue other than Halladay?

Thanks!

Octavio Dotel?

Harang and David Weathers or Arthur Rhodes ?

Royals and Dodgers GM's are chummy.

Should hit us Dayton Moore for Ron Mahay or Juan Cruz.

May is a rental, but Cruz is affordable for next year too.

George Sherrill and Jeremy Guthrie for Chris Withrow, Pedro Baez, Andrew Lambo, Ethan Martin

"George Sherrill and Jeremy Guthrie for Chris Withrow, Pedro Baez, Andrew Lambo, Ethan Martin"

I like Sherrill and think he would fit into the pen perfectly, but there is no way the Dodgers offer anything like this. Lambo and Martin are considered their top two prospects. The only way they are included in any trade would be in exchange for Halladay. Even then, I'm not totally sure they would trade both of them. I want Halladay as bad as any other Dodgers fan but I'm just not sure that even he is worth selling the entire farm. It's really tough, and I hope that Colletti comes through and makes the right decision.

Halladay would probably give the Dodgers the best playoff rotation in baseball however, if not the best overall rotation in baseball. That's right Giants fans the best! Surprisingly, our rotation has been very good up to this point, but it along with our pen are the only two "weaknesses" in this team.

how about Saito??

Guthrie has an ugly FIP. Too good fpr the O's, personally.

"ESPN's Buster Olney noted that the Dodgers had two scouts watch Halladay's start in Tampa yesterday."
Is this really necessary. Does an organization like the Dodgers not know what they would be getting with Halladay?

He is coming off of an injury...

George Sherrill and Jeremy Guthrie for Chris Withrow, Pedro Baez, Andrew Lambo, Ethan Martin"

That would be a starting point for Halladay, with DeJesus probably included. Honestly, I would make that deal in a second...

And agent, the scouts live in Tampa so they were there. They just wanted to see him...

also, that deal has our 1, 2, 5, and like 10 prospects. NO...

Then how about George Sherrill and Jeremy Guthrie for Chris Withrow, Pedro Baez, Ethan Martin, and Javy Guerra

The Oriole wanted at least one top prospects from the Marlins and they arent as good as the Marlins two so it seems fare.

I think the Reds would match up good. Give them a starter, reliever, and wily tavares for juan pierre and matt kemp.

could the Dodgers use Mike Gonzalez or Manny Acosta?

LoL, you guys are going to make the Dodger fans go bat crazy with some of these proposals.

'Then how about George Sherrill and Jeremy Guthrie for Chris Withrow, Pedro Baez, Ethan Martin, and Javy Guerra

The Oriole wanted at least one top prospects from the Marlins and they arent as good as the Marlins two so it seems fare.'

Ok, Sherrill has been good, no doubt. But Jeremy is horrible this yr. I think he has already reached his peak. You want Withrow, oue #2 arm in the system, who is projected to be a #2 starter with real good stuff. Martin is said to be the next kershaw, except as a righty. Baez is our power 3B of the future, another key piece in any Halladay deal, IMO, and Guerra projects to be a closer and a pretty good one.

This is a quote from June 4th, so a little old, but you get the point:

'Javy Guerra ranks second in the Midwest League with 13 saves…he has a 1.82 ERA in 21 appearances, and is limiting the opposition to a .171 average…the Dodgers’ fourth-round pick from the 2004 draft'

So thats a horrible package

'I think the Reds would match up good. Give them a starter, reliever, and wily tavares for juan pierre and matt kemp.'

That doesnt even deserve a response...

well the rumors were harang for matt kemp. i don't see how taveras and a good reliever for pierre is so out of the question.

I dont know who put those rumors out, but lets break it down. A pitcher having a down yr for a CF who should have been an all star arent equal. And a reliever and Taveras for Pierre doesnt make the deal any more appetizing. Kemp is a piece of the future and a reason for pur record. We havent offered Kemp for Halladay or Peavy, so it wont be for Harang...

The Dodgers have more than enough number five type starting pitchers to get them through the 2009 season.

Guthrie would not even make the Dodgers post season roster.

The Orioles might be able to fleece a more desperate team, but certainly not the Dodgers for Guthrie.

Sherrill is okay, but they are not coughing up even "one" of Ethan Martin, Lambo, or Withrow for him either...

Matt Kemp for Harang, that is worse than the made up Orioles idea...

Matt Kemp is amongst the top 10 to 20 most un-touchable players in baseball.

If a GM is as silly as some on the board to ask about Matt Kemp, that is when you quickly hear a dial tone on the other end...

The Dodgers would not give up Kemp in a deal for Halladay, let alone Aaron Harang. That's a ridiculous proposal.

"You want Withrow, oue #2 arm in the system, who is projected to be a #2 starter with real good stuff. Martin is said to be the next kershaw, except as a righty. Baez is our power 3B of the future, another key piece in any Halladay deal, IMO, and Guerra projects to be a closer and a pretty good one."

This is getting ridiculous. Do you realize how many prospects flop?

Withrow has a 4.86 ERA. He better get on that track to being a good number 2 starter fast. He is walking a ton and isn't shutting hitters down, evidenced by his 64 hits allowed in 70 IP.

Martin, the next Kershaw. Haha, thanks for the laugh. Kershaw arms appear once every decade for a team. It is his first season in pro ball, he has a 4.64 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP and you're already calling him the next Kershaw.

Pedro Baez, I'll agree with you on. He is 20 years old showing strong signs of power in Adv A ball, and looks like he could be a pretty solid bat in the future.

Javy Guerra FINALLY put it together this season as a 23-year old in A Ball. Lets wait to see him do something in AA before we call him the closer of the future.

I agree the deal that Porter selected is insane, but stop making it out like all your prospects are future stars.

Would the Pads trade Bell to a division rival?

Bell for one of Martin, Lambo, or Withrow, and maybe a throw in?

The Braves should move Gonzalez or Soriano (or both), both of whom will walk as free agents next season, for a good prospect or two, and the Dodgers should go after one of the two.

Bobby Jenks?

First of all, I don't think Dodger fans are worried about getting through the rest of the season. I think we're worried about getting through the post-season.

For the first time in years the Dodgers have a really solid offensive team, and the pitching is still a bit shaky post-season wise.

Let's look at where we are now.

Bills just blew his 5th chance in a row at getting win # 10. The kid's 24 and has the pressure of being the ace on the best team in baseball.

Kuroda hasn't been the same since he came back from his injury.

Kershaw will be an ace very soon, but the kid's 21. You can't expect the world of him.

Wolf has had a great season, but you never know when he's going to be down for the count.

I say make any move for Halladay or Lee that doesn't involve losing Kemp, Ethier,Bills, or Kershaw. Get rid of Loney if you need to.

The Reds could send the Dodgers David Weathers if L.A. also agreed to take Willy Taveras. No need for the Dodgers to send anyone back...

where does Taveras play? we cant find Pierre, even with his 350+ average and 23 steals in 50 something games, and we cant get him more than an AB or 2 per day. And he just gets in when its a blowout/huge lead...

Meredith for Steven johnson and Chen-Lung Hu?

I agree with ThinkBlue that James Loney might need to be traded. It's not that I want him gone, but better him than Kemp or Ethier. A lot of Dodger fans think we can just put together a package of all the players we don't want and trade them for an ace. But if it were that simple, don't you think Colletti would have done it already? If we want a better rotation AND a better bullpen, we might need to say goodbye to some proven talent. That's all I'm saying.

The problem is, if you trade Loney, who plays first? Not to mention, it's not like he has a ton of value. At least if you trade Ethier, which I wouldn't be a fan of as he tears with Manny in the line-up, Pierre is there to take his place. Kemp isn't going anywhere, as he has become one of the most valuable players in the game, factoring in price and age. The only players on the 25 man roster I can see being moved is McDonald and DeWitt, with Ethier being a long shot.

The Dodgers seem to want to give Johnson a chance, so I dont know if theyd trade him. Hu is nothing special, great glove, still cant hit..

NorCal, I dont think they are trading MLB players. This team relies on chemistry, and Loney is our RBI leader. Also, whos our 1B? Loretta isnt an everyday player, and no one is ready in the minors at 1B...

ThinkBlue hit it spot on. The Dodgers need an ace for the playoffs or they will not get to the series. In 88 they won with a average ballclub and the best pitcher in the league. This year the Dodgers have a staff of no. 3 and 4 pitchers, which look like aces every 3rd or 4th start, that won't cut it in the playoffs. If the Dodgers don't trade for either Lee or Halladay, we will be looking at the 08 Cubs redux.

what about Mike Gonzalez from the Braves for BP help?

How about Matt Capps or John Grabow to the Dodgers??????

"the Dodgers have a staff of no. 3 and 4 pitchers"

Bills 124ERA+
-yes, he has struggled recently

Kershaw 128ERA+
-has been phenominal since May 1st

Wolf 121ERA+
-Has been solid all season

Kuroda 98ERA+
inconsistent since coming off DL, but still solid.

An above average rotation if you ask me.
Actually, 2nd best staff in the Majors, behind the Giants.

A legitimate package that could possibly net Hallady would be: Loney, MacDonald, Lambo and Ethan Martin.

You then move Casey Blake to 1B and DeWitt plays 3B. Yes, it worsens the offense a bit but keeps a left handed bat in the line up and obviously improves the rotation.

You could take E-Mart out of the deal, insert a lower prospect and get Cliff Lee

The BIG problem the Dodgers have is not that our staff has a high ERA or has not been performing well... the PROBLEM is questionable durability.

The staff throws too many pitches, and the starters are not going deep enough into games. I think this will change as Kershaw slowly starts to master how to throw his curveball for a strike, but in the meantime, he's throwing too many pitches per hitter... and Wolf and Kuroda really can't be relied on going past the 6th.

That being said, I don't think the Dodgers need a top flight, ultra low ERA, or ultra high K rate pitcher, we just need a competent innings eater. We don't need a pitcher with killer stuff, what we really need is a pitcher who has a durable young arm that will withstand a season of being "Torre-ized".

Kuo and Belisario have shown that they can't handle being the victim of Joe Torre's annual "Human Pitching Arm Ritual Sacrifice" victim. In effect, Torre needs a new Scott Proctor.

Do I want to trade Loney.....? no I love Loney hes a really good player, but Roy Halladay puts the Dodgers over the top, and makes them instant favorites for the NL Championship. If the Dodgers ended the season today with Roy Halladay on the roster. The Dodgers would match up well vs everyone.
Halladay vs Hammels
Halladay vs Carpenter
Halladay vs Lincecum
Halladay vs Beckett
Halladay vs Sabathia
Halladay vs Lackey

Id have to say the Dodgers would have the advantage or push in all of those match ups. Not to mention you then have Billingsley vs the number 2 and Wolf vs number 3 and Kuroda vs 4 and Kershaw vs 5 gives the Dodgers a HUGE advantage.

We as Dodger fans havent been in this situation in a long time, we are looking to improve our team for the postseason, not just to finish the regular season. I really think the Dodgers have to go for it this year, they have the kids in their prime, they have Manny, and they have the pieces and money to put them over the top, its time to pull the trigger.

2 possible deals

McDonald, Elbert, Dejesus, Lambo for Halladay

Loney, McDonald, Dejesus, Withrow for Halladay

If the Dodgers trade Loney, anyone think Juan Pierre could learn to play 1B? I like DeWitt at 3B and Blake to 1B? or I did hear Ethier takes ground balls at 1B just in case, they could move Either to 1B Pierre to Cf and Kemp to RF?

Isnt it funny how we are trying to figure out how to get Pierre back in the line up?

Manny, the dodgers are at the Jays game, scouting Rolen. It seems that it would be Halladay and Rolen for Loney and prospects. Blake at 1st, rolen at 3rd, or vice versa...

Trade Loney? Doubtful... not with his age and contract value.

And I wouldn't want Rolen on the team. Or Wells. We don't need to get any older in our infield than we already are. Our infield is injury prone enough... we've got Furcal (ankle, knee, chronic back spasms), Hudson (wrist, ankles).... do we really want to add another 30+ age player (Rolen) whose got screws in his fingers and has a nagging bum shoulder? No thanks.

dodgersLBC, think of it this way. Would you rather have Rolen playing 1B with Halladay leading the charge to the WS, or have Loney at 1st with Billz being the ace going into the playoffs? Also, Rolen would only be with us till 2010, when Halladay would be a FA. We could use that money to resign Halladay to an extension. Rolen has similar power numbers, but his OPS is much higher. The defense wouldnt be much worse, our offense would be about the same, but our pitching would be a lot better.

Also, I wouldnt call Hudson an injury risk. He has been a workhorse for us, playing in every game but 5, and his wrist seems fine..

I understand what you are saying, but, if given that choice, I'd rather keep Loney and find another starter on the market to pursue... one that won't require us to give up a very promising young player who we have under contract control through 2012.

I guess well just have to agree to disagree. I DO think we need a pitcher, but I don't think we need to cash out a big chip for the Porsche when a simple Nissan Z would do, for much less cost.

You suggest using Rolen's money after FA to re-sign Halliday... but, you also need to remember that Ethier, Kemp, and Martin, are all arbitration eligible next season and will be commanding more than the current league minimum they are making. Add to this the Manny issue, if he keeps raking, he'll be opting out and asking for more money as well. I just think that given the economy, we need to hold onto the young core and ride them. I don't want a return to the DePodesta era.

Manny wont be able to opt out in 2010, his contract would be up. Its this yr, and he almost definitely wont opt out because no one will give him 20M.

Rolen and Halladay are Fas after 2010. If we dont need to include Lambo(although we probably will) then hed be the 1B. Also, Lambo is projected to be an Ethier-type player, with more power, and probably a LF. If he can rake unitl after 2010, and we keep him, he may be the LF, no manny.

My guess is that Kemp and Ethier will sign deals this offseason, after good yrs. Martin wont, because of a down yr. I agree that they will cost a LOT in total, but those guys are built for a multi-yr run.

I think that we need a guy to lead Billz and Kershaw. Halladay would be a perfect guy. He throws similar pitches as both of them, and could help bith use a change up really well.

When you bring up getting a lesser pitcher, there isnt one out there. Washburn, Lee, and Bedard are still out there, but they will all want packages similar to Halladay.

I think Loney will be a good MLB player, but if he is the difference btwn a title and another nlcs, espically someone that can take his spot, it has to be done

alright everybody put your pipes down. Did I really just read Harang for Kemp? I wouldnt trade Kemp for two Roy Halladays. Loney? Dosent he lead the team in RBIS and where is Kershaw among the league leaders in Ks and Era. Im sure hes up there in BBs too, but hes 21! Imagine Koufax Drysdale, with 6 runs of support per game. Theyve done quite well with what they have, and if anybody tells me its because the Dodgers are in the west.. Look at wests records against other teams out of their division. EXACTLY. Its not the weaqkest division now is it. A bullpen peice is easily aquirable, (whats wrong with Elbert) with out wasting the farm. I think Jarrod Washburn would fit nicely, or even Cliff Lee after the very few teams have done what they could to aquire Halladay. Sure Id love to have Lee over Wash, but wash makes a whole lot more sense, and would be better off in the NL.

As far as my Koufax Drysdale comment, Thats what Bills and Kershaw remind me of. Sure its early in their carrers, but if anybody watches those two, who can tell me they dont see the same thing.

dodgerslbc.. martin and ethier are not making the League minimum. Ethier will get a raise, Kemp will for sure get a raise, and NOBODY not even the Giants (or will they?) will pay Manny more than what hes already set to make. In fact wont Kemp be a super 2 also this year, i could be wrong, and im too lazy to look it up, but i think he will. Theres also Broxton, Loney, Billingsley And I think Kershaw would be right up there on super 2 as well.

Loney for Halladay and Rolen. Dude, your posts can't possibly keep getting stupider than this! Start with Kemp and Kershaw or else just shut the hell up with your nonsense!

When did the Red Sox have a dynasty?

like I said on another post, it wouldnt only be Loney. It would be other top prospects, and that wouldnt be stupid, at all. He is our RBI leader and controlable for 3.5 yrs. Prospects are there for 6 yrs. And they save 30M...
