The Indians released reliever Matt Herges, according to a team press release. They designated him for assignment ten days ago to make room for Winston Abreu. Herges allowed fewer hits than innings pitched in his 25.1 innings, for an ERA of 3.55. Now we'll see if a team looking for relievers, like the Angels or Marlins, picks him up.

Seems like an odd move.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 13, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Seems that they could have traded him for something. Could he possibly have an injury that hasn't been reported yet.
Posted by: BucSox | July 13, 2009 at 12:36 PM
Maybe now they have the possibility of signing him back and DFAing Abreu to correct the mistake they made in the second place.
The first place mistake of course being the one that sent Melaon to Tampa for Abreu to begin with. That was a disaster you could see coming from China. And Abreu has done exactly as expected
Game 1 – 0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 R
Game 2 – 1.0 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 R
Shapiro, what the he!! were you thinking?
Posted by: SuzysMan | July 13, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I said it when he was DFA'd...dumb move
Posted by: MDWhiteSoxFan | July 13, 2009 at 12:45 PM
Yeah this is strange. They traded a young power arm (Meloan) so that they could have Abreu and in order to make room for Abreu they released an effective reliever with a log+ ERA of 127.

This is a really odd move.
The Cubs need bullpen help. Their entire pen is set to regress (low BABIP, high LOB, high FIP). This guy is free.

odd, but this bodes well for alot of other teams, pitching is needed by most of the teams out there and Herges is actually half good

No, the Marlins are going to sign him, because they sign all the DFA'd relievers.

I don't know how things ended with him in Colorado, but you gotta think they'll be in on him. With Embree down and an already thin bullpen, they could sure use him.

"Shapiro, what the he!! were you thinking?"
It seems like both of us are on every Abreu-related post asking Shapiro for an explanation as to how any of these moves have made any sense.
Herges has a 3.89 FIP this year and posted a 4.04 FIP in two years in Colorado before this season, while Abreu has a 5.86 FIP in 43 innings with four different teams.
I get that Abreu might have a bit more upside because he throws 91-95 while Herges throws 87-91, but isn't it pretty obvious who the better pitcher is..?

What your not hearing about much like The Dodgers Meloan also rubbed the high ups within the Indians organization the wrong way was said to not take direction well and was overall lazy.
Herges situation shocks me totally this guy was lights out for about 3 weeks in a row and then just lost it and it could be that Wedge tends to find a horse that he can ride hard and then he rides him into the ground.
Just look at all the pitching injuries within the bullpen over the last 2 or 3 years they are at a outrageous level.

Every move Shapiro makes from here on out this season has to be evaluated in the context of:
A. Setting up trades over the next few weeks and/or
B. Getting playing time for the kids
You have to assume that Shapiro tried to trade Herges and found no takers. Herges is not going to be with the Tribe next year and any marginal performance he would have provided this year is irrelevant. I can only assume that Abreu will come into play as a minor piece in an upcoming deal or they simply saw something they liked in him.

Check the games he's pitched in, Herges has tapered off in a hurry.
In his last 8 games, he's gone 6.2 innings, given up 16 hits, 8 runs, and 2 BB with 3 Ks. It's just a case of a 39 year old without much left in the tank, and batters figuring him out.
The Abreu move made zero sense, it has to come down to injury/attitude/PEDs or something on Meloans part.
The Tribe are done, they need to clear space for their young bullpen arms to develop. The Perezes, Joe Smith, Jensen Lewis, and Tony Sipp should be exposed to all situations, so that the front office knows what they have for next season. There's a lot of talent in that group, they just need coaching and experience.

I agree that the Indians have a lot of good, young bullpen arms, but their coaching staff is incompetent especially Chuck Hernandez. They need to make some changes. The Indians should have been a mid to high 80s win team this year according to baseball prospectus and they are going to have trouble getting to 70......

lets see if the Marlins offer him a contract. we're starting to look good in the bullpen but we use our relievers alot so it wouldn't hurt to have him. At the very least in the minors.

No kidding about Hernandez. I was pretty pissed when they used Luis Isaac as a scapegoat last offseason, and then hired that bum. I can understand where Shapiro was coming from, as far as guaranteeing Wedge's job for the season, but Hernandez and Willis should have been seriously scrutinized.
Inconsistancy has been a hallmark of Willis's tenure as pitching coach.

“I get that Abreu might have a bit more upside because he throws 91-95”
Abreu has upside? Sure, he has a fastball a bunch of eager AAA kids fan at, but that doesn’t mean much since they want him to face real ML hitters now. Otherwise it is straight control issues and low BAbip (result of the lack of control with that FB you would have to imagine). Where could Shapiro be seeing this upside? Shoot, where are you? Lol
Anyway, see you in the “Indians DFA Abreu” post a couple weeks from now :)
“Check the games he's pitched in, Herges has tapered off in a hurry.”
He was so lucky in the first month, he was bound to experience problems – especially on a club experiencing so many of them all over the place already.

Bingo. Too funny.
Although, having watched Herges this year, he went from good to bad to worse in a hurry, and I saw no reason to keep him around when they're already in Spring Training 2010.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Braves pick him up, and send Kris Medlen to AAA to start.
Posted by: Braves for NL East!! | July 13, 2009 at 08:34 PM
He will sign with a contender somewhere.

If the Dodgers lose out on the hallday sweepstakes, getting Beimel and Herges for cash not prospects seems like a nice addition to the bullpen, not the premier relievers, but nice additions that do not sacrifice the future.
Posted by: Dodgersin2009 | July 14, 2009 at 06:02 PM
I'll take Herges on the Tigers. Why hasn't DD picked him up yet? Oh, yeah. Neglecting the bullpen is his passion.
