The Marlins, who have signed three relievers this week, are talking with the Pirates about trading for another. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Marlins have maintained contact with the Pirates about closer Matt Capps, though the two sides are not close to a deal.

Yeah Capp's is worth quite a bit more than Hermeida.
If the Marlins want bullpen help I'd say a Grabow for Hermeida trade is very fair.

If the Pirates are trying to work their way into the Bryce Harper sweepstakes they might want to not do it so half-assed... just do the fire sale already.

It most likely can't happen because they are fighting for the same division but wouldn't a Hermida for Peter Moylan or Mike Gonzales make sense for both sides.

What could the Pirates get from the Fish for Capps?
Posted by: BucSox | July 09, 2009 at 09:10 AM
Bonafacio and prospects for Capps I would guess. This would let us trade Wilson and have a MLB ready everyday SS.

When are people gonna figure out that the Pirates are not being forced into making these moves? There's no need for them to dump salary. Would they like to move some players(Capps/Grabow/LaRoche/ Wilson)? Yes, but only if it helps them get younger talent in return. The days of Littlefield trading players for a couple of baseballs and some chewing tobacco are over.

@enchinga: I agree with you that the Pirates are not being forced into a fire sale.
I like what I'm hearing from numerous reports that the Pirates are "asking too much" for players now - they should! They have absolutely no reason to trade them (unless ownership is pressuring it - to make more $$$), so if they do trade them they should get what they want! Someone takes the bait? Good. No one takes the bait? Good - nothing lost!
The Pirates do NOT need another outfielder - the outfield is full, and the "emergence" (I'm using that term loosely right now) of Garrett Jones has made it even more full! Unless the Pirates can ship out an OF in the deal, it makes no sense to bring more in at the ML level.

Yea...I'm pretty tired of hearing this team still looking for bullpen help....take out the pitchers that are on the disabled list or back in the minors and this team has a damn good bullpen!!! This team needs another bat!!

How about Hermida, Scott Cousins, and Rick VandenHurk for Matt Capps and a minor league reliever/infielder? Or throw in Alejandro De Aza/Jai Miller with Hermida for just Capps

Would the Marlins trade Coghlan?
Posted by: Ian Smell | July 09, 2009 at 10:48 AM
pirates dont waste your time with the marlins... get into talks with Tampa Bay... and get Reid Brignac and Wade Davis for Capps... and if thats not enough throw in Sanchez for 2 more prospects.... Then trade Adam LaRoche to NY METS for Jon Niese, Adam Bostick the local product (LHP for the bullpen), and a position player prospect... then trade Wilson's ass to boston for 2 mid tier prospects... that will gain my satisfaction for this years deadline!

"Would the Marlins trade Coghlan?"
no chance of that happening man

hopefully the pirates have no interest in hermida. he just doesn't seem to fit into the big picture for the bucs.

I bet the marlins could get Bell from the friars for j. delgado and bret sinkbeil and maybe badenhop too?

The Pirates and Rays almost match up too well in terms of Matt Capps.

"The Pirates and Rays almost match up too well in terms of Matt Capps."
I'm guessing that you had in mind some type of Capps-for-Brignac swap?
Considering how solid Brignac has been at AAA this year, the Pirates would probably have to throw in another prospect to even things out.

I think you guys are really overvaluing Capps' trade value here. He's a good but underperforming reliever that the Marlins tried to snag for a good but underperforming outfielder. I seriously doubt he nets a top prospect, and think his value is greatest with the Pirates. xlazox is right, the Bucs have no reason to trade Capps unless they're bowled over.

And the Rays, with they're monstrous stable of prospects, can and should shoot higher than Capps.

"And the Rays, with they're monstrous stable of prospects, can and should shoot higher than Capps."
And who would that be, outside of Huston Street?
I mean, yeah, you could try to pry Joakim Soria or something, but you'd almost absolutely be wasting your time.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 09, 2009 at 12:59 PM
scribbletone: "prying" = trying to get someone from a team that doesn't want to trade that person; you'll surely overpay (if Soria is even available).
As for the Rays "shooting higher than Capps" - they have to be willing to part with their "monstrous stable of prospects" to shoot higher, and they are understandably shrewd with their prospects.

Delgado isn't with Florida anymore. Seattle picked him up on a waiver claim during spring training.

none of those signings will make a difference for the marlins. old washed up guys arent going to be enough.
Posted by: Calriver | July 09, 2009 at 06:38 PM
In a couple of years the marlins WILL be the best team in the league . But for now just keep adding wins every year 82,85,87 and they will make the playoffs in 5 years i guarantee .
