MLB Nixes Yankees Deal With Dominican SS

Melissa Segura of SI.com reports that Major League Baseball's Department of Investigations has determined that Dominican shortstop Damian Arredondo used a false identity when he signed with the Yankees for $850k earlier this month. Arredondo is not the player's real name and he is older than orginally believed.

By rule, the player formerly known as Damian Arredondo must wait a year before he can sign with another club. Seguara says that in general, MLB is working with authorities to bring criminal charges on those who orchestrate such fraud.

Miguel Tejada was the 1st to get caught in the Major Leagues but now they are doing alot of investigating so the player doesn't ruin a franchise team. I wonder how they are able to change their names without government and everyone else knowing?

Ever visit any of the countries that these irregularities are involved? Do it sometime and you will see why. They are corrupt from top to bottom.

whoa i can see now that there are more cash for Yankees to $$$ on Sano. watch out Pirates

Its really not that difficult of a thing to do in the US either.

random thought....hypothetically lets say the Yankees still wanted to sign the player even after finding out he was a couple years older....can they still do it or would they have to wait a year?

They still get to wait a year

"Its really not that difficult of a thing to do in the US either."

I was stationed in some of those countries and I doubt the US can hold a candle to what goes on in some of those countries, especially after seeing it 1st hand and doubt much changes even 35+ years later.

They still have to wait. MLB is punishing the player who perpetrated the fraud.

So for example if I'm a player that plays for the NBA using the name Kobe James (example)age of 20, out of Wake Forest how would I get away with this when my records should be with the government/ Social Security Number as well

mlbtraderumors.com: Come for the rumors, stay for the social security fraud.

I wonder how they are able to change their names without government and everyone else knowing?

I am from Puerto Rico and I know that there is a very large "underground" market here where Puerto Ricans looking for cash are willing to sell their identity (of course, as you may know, Puerto Ricans have U.S. citizenship) to Cubans and Dominicans.

I am not saying that was the case here, but it is very well possible.

maybe now the yankees will be big players for sano since they now have almost $1 million more to spend out there what do you guys think? his agent wants him to sign with the highest bidders.

Maybe they can make a run at Sano now.

Oh yes, I imagine the Yankees reportedly balked at Sano before because they scrounged and scrounged and scrounged and just didnt have an extra million to spend.

Did the "formerly known as" already spend that money on a mansion and a pimped out escalade in the Dominican Republic? Are the Yankees getting there money back?

The MLB needs to add the Dominican Republic to the draft like they did Canada, and then each team will spend some time actually investigating the players they are interested in.

HIS REAL NAME IS JULIO FRANCO AND HE'S 67 YEARS OLD!!!

El Duque is his advisor/agent.
