Odds And Ends: Pujols, Pirates, Marlins

Links for Friday...

its funny how Bud talks about the ambassadors of baseball when himself is a large tool

"Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Cardinals would lock Albert Pujols up to an extension as soon as possible in a perfect world. "

Wow Ken...What a scoop...

im probably going to get my teeth kicked in like i did with my halladay comment earlier, but the sox should look into trading Papelbon to the marlins, that shoe fits in my eyes

If the Marlins want a closer, how about Gregg? Or did they want a good one. Fontenot, hoffpauer/fox, and a BP guy for any of those guys

The Marlins best available option i think is Capps, but his era is scary

Uh, we traded away Gregg for a reason. We don't want him back. I don't think the Marlins are that needy for a closer. Nunez is this team's closer in my eyes, and should have been from the beginning of the year. Meyer has also done well in some situations.

I wouldn't be adverse to trading for a closer like Heath Bell, but only dealing Hermida/Uggla, not Ross. Cody is the second best hitter on the team, a consistent run producer, and an above average defender.

Also, don't play much attention to Cote. He is not a good sportswriter when it comes to gauging team needs.

"Bud Selig told Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Pujols, Derek Jeter and Trevor Hoffman are among baseball's best ambassadors."

Poor A-Rod, never feels the love. lol!

"Greg Cote of the Miami Herald says the Marlins need to acquire a closer, even if it means giving up Cody Ross, Jeremy Hermida or Dan Uggla."

Matt Lindstrom is throwing and preparing to return soon. This isnt a need for them. And before anyone looks at Lindstroms ERA and says he sucks or whatever, it really is solely due to 2 scattered games (only one a save opp) and the 2 days prior to him going on the DL where he tried to pitch through the pain. He has been much, much, much better then his numbers would imply, and the Marlins would have a hard time finding a better closer on the market. Making it questionable to give up anything for one period, especially days before Matt gets back.

"Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Cardinals would lock Albert Pujols up to an extension as soon as possible in a perfect world."

Ken let these hidden jewel out of the bag.

If Pujols would be open to DH'ing on occasion imagine the bidding war that could occur if he hit the open market. He could easily top A-Rod as the highest paid player.

The only team that can afford Pujols and has first base locked down is the Yankees with Texeira. Boston (i know they have lars coming up and youk but they can move them around ie youk at third and lars DH), the Mets, and St. Louis really seem like the only options to me. Boston and the Mets because they can throw obscene amounts of money at Pujols but he seems to love st. louis and I doubt that either he or Mauer change addresses

As for the Fish, what would it take to get Uggla in a braves uniform? I think it has to be held off until the Winter because we're battling each other in the east and don't want to help one another but we lack impact bats and he can be one especially away from Landshark

What exactly would being open to DHing have to do with his value? There are 29 teams that love to have him play 1B for them for the next 10 years - and let us not completely write-off the Yankees, who might think about moving Tex to DH for the better fielding best hitter in the game to man that spot instead.

As a Cubs fan, I kind of have hate the guy. But man oh man is he ever the best player in the game. Best bat coupled with some of the better D you will see. Might as well get his plaque ready now, he could hit like Cesar Izturis the rest of his career and still be a first ballot guy.

I'd disagree, re: Lindstrom. He may throw 100+ heat, but it's straight as an arrow and his secondary pitches are so erratic. In some ways, he's Gregg revisited - a good middle reliever who you don't regularly want in high-leverage situations.

I'd prefer the Marlins focus on a big LF bat or a legit 3B first, but acquiring a great BP arm with closing experience to free up Calero as main "fireman"/high-leverage situations, Meyer mainly for tough lefties, and Nunez as primary setup, would be cool too.

Suzys right, I don't think you could even count the Yankees out but in the end i think he remains in st. louis and for a lot less than the 30 million or so he could get annually elsewhere

what about mike gonzalez to the fish for cody ross? not sure of ross contract but the braves could let him go because of sorianos succuess

Latos is a stud and will be sitting in the top three of San Diego's rotation by the end of the year, making it easier for SD to trade Peavy this off-season.

I thought about it as well he hate me but how does that make sense for the fish? Ross has been amazing, they aren't in dire need of a closer, he's cheaper, and gonzalez is a FA at the end of the season

well it says at the top marlins would like to acquire a closer...braves just need a bat and there not gonna be able to make a run for the east w/o one

Ross is making $2.25 million and has a couple years of arbitration left, I believe. However, he's currently too important to the lineup (both for his offense and defense) that trading him for a reliever would be a step backwards this season.

Considering Hermida seemingly isn't too attractive of a trading chip, they're better off using Coghlan and prospects if they want to make a run now.

I doubt the Marlins would within the division with a rival team that is also in the race for the division lead. Besides, the Marlins are also in need of another bat, so they wouldn't trade away one of there best hitters unless getting one in return.

^I meant that the Marlins wouldn't trade within the division.

The Marlins wouldn't trade within the division to a rival team in a race for 1st, especially when Ross provides much needed offense.

Sorry about all the posts, my internet browser went haywire on me.

Of course the Cardinals need to keep Albert happy, why exactly did Rosenthal waste time doing that article again?

CaneFlash I was talking about an Uggla trade during the off-season. The Marlins and Braves have done plenty of deals within the division during the off-season in recent years. and he hate me that's the opinion of a florida sports writer not the marlins front office

bravesfan, I was addressing he hate me's proposal of Gonzalez for Ross. I am all for trading Uggla in the offseason. Coghlan is going to be his replacement and we have several guys in the minors that can play LF in Morrison and Stanton. Only question would be what can the Marlins get for Uggla. It all depends on what he does in the 2nd half of the season.

Considering the front office love of Bonifacio, he might be the future 2B, not Coghlan. It's up in the air.

i completely agree with 04forever. the marlins should try and trade for papelbon.
or in other words, maybe the sox should try to move him as long as he's still got value and reputation

The Fish could get bell for morrison and jesus delgado
