Odds And Ends: Rolen, Gonzalez, Buchholz

Time for more links as we wrap up the weekend after a rain-shortened Futures Game. Well really a rain-prolonged Futures Game, but here are the links either way...

  • As Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com points out, there was a time when GMs made a point of attending All-Star Games. This week, many will spend time with their families and message one another from a distance.
  • Blue Jays Assistant GM Alex Anthopoulos says the Jays plan on keeping Scott Rolen around through the end of next season, when his contract's up, according to MLB.com's Brian Eller.
  • Yahoo's Tim Brown reports that Adrian Gonzalez will continue to be a Padres fan whether he plays in San Diego or not. Gonzalez seems to have confidence in the team's new CEO, Jeff Moorad.
  • Clay Buchholz told WEEI.com's Alex Katz that he'll focus on process, not results when he pitches for the Red Sox in Toronto after the break.

How about this:

Red Sox get: Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell

Padres get: Julio Lugo(salary eaten), Justin Masterson, Daniel Bard, and Lars Anderson/Caly Bucholz?

Red Sox Get: Adrian Gonzalez, Heath Bell. Brian Giles.

Padres Get: Masterson, Anderson/Bucholtz, Ellsbury

Sound Good????

Bucholtz is being showcased here . . . the question is, for who?

Honestly, I think the RS would be ignorant to deal for a SS. They have a history of winning with less than the best in spots they pick - see Bellhorn in '04. Green or Lowry will get them there.

will not trade masterson, clay and jacoby for all the kings horses and all the kings men. No way. But with kotsay already a viable option and bailey a decent option are the sox really needing anything? I say no, nick green has gotten better and better defensively and is hitting about .260 i think, not bad for a ss. Outfield has no glaring weakness with bay, ellsbury, and drew. catching has proved a none weakness because varitek changed his stance to be more quiet and it has paid off. kottaras is not a big average man but he catches tim and i see him taking advantage of the monster for a good amount of doubles. Pitching is world championship quality. I think a very logical deal would come in a three way ordeal. Someone in the chase wants a pitcher. They cant get halladay. the sox give them penny and tell them to give the jays two not supreme but good prospects. the sox throw the jays bucholz and anderson. with the team getting penny giving the jays the young ss they want and a pitcher as well. This is a deal that the redsox give up penny and two elite prospects to land doc, to make a championship team that much better with a simple upgrade from b penny to doc. what do ya think about this?

Red Sox get: Adrian and Brian Padres get: Anderson, Buchholz, Reddick and Masterson.Could that work?

I've seen Anderson thos year, and to tell you the truth he has not impressed me. I do not know how he made the Eastern League All-Stars. Reddick has more upside, and a kid they have Jiminez at 3rd, has shown me more promise.

Funny thing the kid the Sox brought up just recently, Bates, was a .300 hitter last year for Portland, who I saw last year, and he impressed me more than Anderson. Unless he has a better second half, the jury is still out on this kid.

Ellsbury is untouchable, after that anything could happen.

I read the article about Gonzalez and it doesn't sound likely at all that they'll move him. More like that they'll keep him around no matter what as their franchise player.

ya, i dont see ellsbury in any deal because i see him being elite in a couple more years working on a higher average and more power while retaining tht speed and glove. but padres person that deal could work. I just dont see the redsox trading more than two of bard, buch, masterson, and bowden. your giving them the two big names and we get two outstanding guys and bowden is just as major league ready as buch in my opinion. could be the fifth starter if needed next year for sure. a package of reddick, anderson, who is young and just needs time to mature. buch and masterson could land just about anyone besides maybe pujols or hanram, but it would be hard for the cards or marlins to turn that down

How about this. Stephen Drew from Arizona for Delcarmen, Lowry (who is playing now), and maybe one more pitcher, perhaps Buchholz. I know Clay has pitched well in Pawtucket, but I just don't think he's a bonafied major leaguer. The Diamondbacks relief is atrocious until Qualls in the 9th. Drew and Green could platoon which means Drew will be playing more. I think he'll be a star and playing with his brother can't hurt. I don't think anyone wants Lugo so keep him unless we can find somebody desperate. Perhaps Arizona would take him in the trade and we could pay his salary.

I don't think Toronto will trade Halladay to us or the Yankees, so forget about him. Smoltz looks like he's gonna be OK, so I think our pitching is fine.

Uh.

That's the worst trade I've ever heard in my life. Do the Sox need more bullpen depth? No. They already have 2 major league-ready closers in Papelbon and Bard. Do the Sox have anywhere to put Gonzales? No. They have a full outfield that has been healthy, two corners that are veteran mainstays, and a DH who has been tearing the cover off the ball since the beginning of June. Why give up good talent for nothing gained, nothing won? And no, I couldn't care less about the Padres.

"I know Clay has pitched well in Pawtucket, but I just don't think he's a bonafied major leaguer."

Are you kidding me? The guy tosses a no-hitter at 23 years old, and he's not a "bonafied" major league player? What have you been smoking? He fell apart last year because of overuse and because he was called up too early due to injury. He's still younger than most prospects at AAA. And did I mention he TOSSED A NO-HITTER... at the major league level. Right. I did.

If one of the best front offices in baseball (Boston's) didn't see something in Clay, he'd have been dealt last year, especially with three other blue-chip pitching prospects behind him in the farm system.

I know Buchholz threw a no-hitter, but how many pitchers in the past have thrown one and then disappeared off the face of the earth? Some guys handle pressure better than others and I don't Clay will cut it in the majors.
