The Astros claimed catcher Chris Coste off waivers after the Phillies released him, according to Scott Lauber of the Wilmington News Journal. Coste, 36, was hitting .245/.342/.382 in 45 games for the Phillies, with a pair of homers. The Phillies let the fan favorite go to make room for Raul Ibanez.

About time. In the offseason Coste mentioned contemplating retirement, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him call it quits.

The only surprise is that Bako, who is even worse, was kept over him. Is it time for Marson as main backup yet?

I figured Charlie Manuel was going to name him as an injury replacement to the All Star Team!

I'd take Ronny Paulino back right now. He's not that much better, but it was obvious in Spring Training that Coste was done and Bako is awful.

i guess Carlos wasn't hurt last night. I would like to see Marson get some split time now but he's playing regularly at LHV now and doing much better over the last month or so.

If they bring up Marson, how long will it be for?
I think the original reason they brought up Bako, was to make way for a Marson trade.
Perhaps as part of a package for Halladay?! (Salivating...)

Free Lou Marson! Marson's been hot lately (.348/.408/.393 since June 1) and Carlos Ruiz has been ice-cold (.179/.250/.250 since June 1). Let's give Marson some starts and see what he can do.
If Marson comes up, it's a good move, though I'm sad to see Coste go. If Bako stays, someone needs their head examined.

Shame. Coste was a feel good story for a few years, but he really hasn't brought anything to the table this season. At least he won a ring.
Funny all this "Bako is even worse" stuff. Neither of them can hit a lick, granted, but at least Bako can catch a little bit. Coste is terrible behind the plate. Thus Bako staying, Coste going. Lesser of two non-contributors.

Does this mean John Mayberry stays on the bench getting 3 ABs a week for the rest of the season? That can't be good for a young hitter's development. Playing time will be extremely hard to come by with Raul back in the lineup.

Someone told me that Drabek was supposed to be starting tomorrow night, and yesterday that's what it said, but now it says TBA. Anyone know anything about this?
Posted by: atticus | July 10, 2009 at 03:24 PM
I'm sorry, it said that on the Reading Phillies website yesterday. Didn't specify above.

Definitely a feel good story and good guy, but the bottom line is, he hasn't cut it in the Show this year.
The Phillies' loyalty blinded them in not keeping Paulino.
While Bako is equally as bad at the plate, he's a very good catcher. It was very apparent by watching Lidge throw to Coste that Coste lacked a bit defensively.
I'll take a defensive backstop anyday over a guy who's purely a hitter.
Marson should stay down, unless Chooch hits the DL.

Drabek will represent the Phillies in the Futures Game on Sunday

is coste really that terrible? i don't get to see the phils play much.
what are the astros doing to make room? DFA'ing humberto quintero? i don't know why they'd do that. quintero seems to be a decent defensive catcher, although his bat reminds one of the great eddie perez.
coste is hitting .245/.342/.385 while quintero is hitting .243/.263/.311
unless coste is literally the worst catcher ever, this is an upgrade because the astros bench is *awful*. erstad and michaels are below .200, kata can't hit, quintero can't hit, etc. the only "threat" is either keppinger or blum, whichever one isn't starting at third. and that's not saying much.
of course the astros could just call up jr towles, who is smoking at AAA with .296/.412/.484

@stephen: he's not AWFUL, but he's not a full-timer by any stretch (both because of talent and age).
I'm sad to see him go, as he could occasionally crush a ball and gives the absolute best post-game soundbytes around. No BS, no platitudes, he just talks plain. Real insight into the ML world.
Good luck to him, and I hope he gets to play in Philly again someday. He'll get one hell of a welcome back cheer.

I don't understand why Coste was cut and not (De)Bako? Unless the team is willing to bring up Marson, chosing
(De)Bako over Coste is foolish!

I like how everyone says Coste is a terrible hitter and everything.....Has anyone looked at Carlos Ruiz stats lately:
.239/.340/.374
Not any better (worse in fact). In fact over the past 3 seasons, Coste has put up better offensive numbers than Ruiz in every year. The only thing Ruiz does better is block Lidge's sliders in the dirt. He certainly can't throw out base stealers. I'm hoping Marson gets the call soon, because Ruiz is just awful and I continue to be baffled by the fact that the Phillies brass views him as an everday major leaguer.

Cubs just missed getting Coste....

DFA'ing him over Bako? Wow!
