« Indians Interested In Gobble, Not Ryan | Main | Meche Wants To Stay With Royals »
6:34pm: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer spoke with the Reds and says it was the Rockies that called the Reds to see if they were interested in Atkins, adding that they are not. Fay cites the $3.4MM Atkins is owed and his position as reasons the Reds are not interested. Fay does say the Reds would be willing to add salary for the "right guy." He also says the Reds could trade a relief pitcher, but that it would probably not be Nick Masset.
4:45pm: The Reds have spoken to the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies are looking for relievers, but it will be hard to match up salaries, as Atkins makes $3.4MM before the end of the season, much more than most relievers. The Rockies would likely have to cover some of Atkins' salary in a deal for a cheap reliever like Nick Masset, but could trade him for a pricier arm like David Weathers, if he's available.

Fat chance on the Mariners, unless they have no intention of signing Beltre after the season.

There is no chance the M's will take on the contract that Boras will want for Beltre. But if by some miracle he does resign with Seattle, the M's have a place Atkins can play that the Rockies don't. DH. A Miguel Batista for Garrett Atkins would work.

And the Gears keep turnin'. The Rockies trade away atkins, put Freddy Sanchez at 3B (while Ian Stewart rots away some more, poor guy, he needs to start somewhere) and you get a couple of relievers and the Rockies look even more Solid.
As a giants fan, I don't like the looks of this.

"while Ian Stewart rots away some more, poor guy, he needs to start somewhere"
He's the starter over Atkins currently, Atkins subs for him and Helton every few games.

As a Reds fan, the only way I do this deal is if it's Weathers for Atkins straight up. Atkins is having an abysmal year in one of the best hitter's parks in the league, but I'd be happy just to dump Weathers and finally be done with him (if just so that Dusty can quit trying to use him in the 8th inning to blow games).
Trading Masset for Atkins would be pure lunacy.

No wonder the rockies are doing so well then. All the more reason for Atkins to get traded.

That Troy Rench story is hilarious. Manny Delcarmen for Atkins? Even more ludicrous than Saito was. If the Rockies want a closer, then they had better start talking about a Tulo trade then discard/salary dump Atkins.

Yeah, Ian Stewart is a big reason (more power, better defense at third) why the Rockies are winning more, but I don't like the idea of trading Atkins unless it was for someone like Masset (which wouldn't happen) because he's the Rockies only reliable backup infield bat right now and you still can't count on Helton being there the entire season. Plus, his value isn't great enough to get the Rockies a valuable reliever, so it isn't worth it.

This doesn't make any sense to me for the Reds. What are they going to do with Edwin Encarnacion?
The Mariners look like the best fit right now for him IMO.

Die hard Reds fan here...
Atkins won't help us. Why add another below average bat for one of our bullpen studs.
The only reason we're still in it this year is because of Herrera, Masset, Rhodes and Weathers.
Weathers for Atkins would be a horrible trade.

would love to see the reds make a move. This could be done if we move weathers but I think we could do better. masset is out of the question. and as a reds fan, i know we'd have to put much more on the table but i'd love to get luke scott from the o's, if not rios is a lot of salary but i think its worth it for weathers and arroyo. if toronto takes it with say a darly tompson or matt maloney thrown in then I love it

Masset wont be going anywhere. He has been nasty this year and could be the future closer in Cincy once CoCo is gone.
Posted by: redsfan | July 09, 2009 at 06:44 PM
It doesn't make sense for them to make the move. Where would Edwin play?
If they are going to go after a 3rd basemen, Edwin would be put into the package. I could see Arroyo and Edwin in a trade to Toronto for Scott Rolen.

I have little use for anything written by the Denver Post.
Inside The Rockies is a much better source for Rockies rumors and information.
Posted by: A-Tex | July 09, 2009 at 07:22 PM
There is no way on earth the Reds are going to take on Rolen's contract. No way on earth anyone would take on Arroyo's contract either. Atkins makes no sense for the Reds right now.

Kinsm, What about if the Reds Dumped Arroyo, EE, and a minor leaguer for Rolen and a minor leaguer from Toronto with good upside would you do that trade. I don't know anything about the Blue Jays farm system so just an idea.
Posted by: JayTheRed | July 10, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I would love to see the Reds trade EE and Arroyo to the Mariners for Beltre. Good hitter but better defender. A huge step up from EE.
Posted by: kwk08 | July 10, 2009 at 11:18 AM
The Reds should trade Weathers straight up for the Rockies worst hot dog vender and be willing to eat the salary difference just to never see him in another close game.
