« Marlins Acquire Nick Johnson | Main | Jake Peavy Dealt To White Sox Again »
4:08pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports that the Nats get righty Ryan Mattheus and Robinson Fabian in the deal.
2:20pm: The Rockies acquired lefty reliever Joe Beimel from the Nationals, according to Chico Harlan of the Washington Post. The Nats received two minor leaguers, says SI's Jon Heyman via Twitter. Beimel, 32, has allowed a .233/.288/.417 line to lefties this year. He has about $800K left on his contract and projects as a Type B free agent after the season.

Dombrowski whiffs again.
Dave, your bullpen leads the league in blown saves, is 10th in bullpen ERA, and they suck!

Beimel's been better than last year. He just plays on a horrible team with no defense behind him. He'll do much better in Colorado. (sounds funny, but true)

Forgot to add that his WHIP has been lower this year, especially against lefties.

Joe's done a good job for the Nationals, he will help the Rockies out of the pen. Just don't try to use him for two innings, though.

Don't know who does or doesn't follow MLBTR on twitter, but Tim said TypePad is down. Let's help him out with deals and rumors. He's given so much time and effort to us, it's the least we can do. haha

I have to imagine that the Rockies will try to use Beimel in a LOOGY role, and that this deal was made so that Morales could become a true set-up man with Betancourt and not just work to lefties. It also helps that this give the Rockies the needed second lefty in the bullpen.

Heyman says: "hey, nats did something! traded joe beimel to the rockies for 2 minor leaguers. nats gm rizzo goes for job push."

One of them is the injured former Futures game prospect Ryan Mattheus, according to Troy Renck.
Posted by: bballrox4717 | July 31, 2009 at 03:29 PM
who are they?????
Posted by: braves77 | July 31, 2009 at 03:59 PM
What an epic win for the Rockies. Beimel could net a comp pick for Colorado, Mattheus, while good, has injury problems and is 25 or 26 (I forget), and Fabian is 23 and terrible in A ball.
Wow, Rizzo got fleeced.
Posted by: bballrox4717 | July 31, 2009 at 04:11 PM
Not to mention the Rockies got a good, second lefty in their pen.
I love Dan O'Dowd. The past two deals are Betancourt and Beimel for Graham, Mattheus, and Fabian. We gave up nothing good except Graham and added a set up man and LOOGY.

@bballrox4717
I don't think acquiring Joe Beimel, no matter how affordably, can ever be referred to as "epic"
Posted by: RockiesMagicNumber | July 31, 2009 at 04:18 PM
I'm not sure you can say that Rizzo "got fleeced" Everybody said that about the Nyjer Morgan/Milledge deal and that looks solid so far. Everybody jumps on the Nats when they don't trade people and now negativity when they do...
Posted by: peytondowdy | July 31, 2009 at 04:19 PM
@RockiesMagicNumber
True I guess.
@Peytondowdy: You don't know how bad Fabian has been nor the fact that Mattheus isn't pitching until next year at least.

Press release:
The Nationals today acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Mattheus and right-handed pitcher Robinson Fabian from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel and cash considerations.
Wow we made out like bandits!!!
Posted by: tulo4mvp | July 31, 2009 at 04:24 PM
Inside Coors Field's thin air , Joe Beimel is not your typical set-up guy. Be forewarned, this guy serves up batting practice pitches.
Wow we made out like bandits!!!
Posted by: tulo4mvp | July 31, 2009 at 04:24 PM
yeah....right ;-)
Posted by: halloweencolors | July 31, 2009 at 04:35 PM
Then again, Beimel was a Jim Tracy guy back in the Dodger days....
Posted by: halloweencolors | July 31, 2009 at 04:36 PM
We also got CASH, and a compensatory pick next year, so even he tanks, we still make out like bandits, if he doesn't it's that much better, both of the guys that we gave up weren't even on our top 30 prospects list, one just had elbow surgery and is 25 and the other is 23 in single-A low Asheville with a 3-6 with a 6.24 ERA in 24 appearances (12 starts). That speaks for itself.

Since Spilborghs' name was frequently mentioned as trade bait, why not send him to the O's for George Sherill? Instead, Sherill goes to the Dogdoers. Way to go O'Dowd. Anyway, as a Giants fan, game on and may the best team win. Good luck!

Joe Beimel: rent-a-lefty-specialist
