« Odds And Ends: Wagner, Red Sox, Scherzer | Main | Odds And Ends: Rolen, Butler, Braves, Yanks »
The Twins deepened their rotation today, acquiring Carl Pavano from the Indians for a player to be named later, according to a team press release. Pavano, 33, has allowed 150 hits in 125.2 innings, posting a respectable 88K/23BB ratio.
His base salary is just $1.5MM, but in addition to the $500k remaining on his contract, Pavano stands to earn a lot through incentives. If he makes 10 more starts and averages 6.0 IP per outing, he'll make another $1.75 in bonuses. We heard yesterday that the Indians expect to lose $16MM this year, but they'll receive some relief if the Twins are paying the rest of Pavano's contract.
A note from Kelsie Smith of the Pioneer Press: The Twins claimed Pavano off waivers before making the deal.

This is, without a doubt, the single most important trade of the 2009 season.
Posted by: dwarfcatt | August 07, 2009 at 10:36 AM
so he passed through waivers?
Posted by: johan is GOD | August 07, 2009 at 10:39 AM
I think this is amazing, the Twins taking a shot on a player that is always injured? Pavano has not pitched all that bad this year. To me it really smells of desperation.
Posted by: jjswol | August 07, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Most likely he did not pass through waivers but the Twins were the team to claim and work out a trade with the Indians.
Posted by: RCFOM | August 07, 2009 at 10:48 AM
I am pretty sure this guy is not the Twins answer.
Posted by: MNCubsFan | August 07, 2009 at 10:50 AM
jjswol, so which is it? Pavano isn't all that bad this year, or he's always injured and the Twins are desperate?
Posted by: JRog | August 07, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Where is the source reporting it?
Posted by: Dj 26 | August 07, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Two things:
1. The twins need a healthy body to pitch, preferably a vet.. and
2. Pavano is 3-0 versus the Tigers this season..
These are the real reasons the twins got him..

Det 1.93 23.1

Pavano is not an ace but for a couple of million he is a decent backend rotation pitcher
Posted by: ryno23 | August 07, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Twins fans are already a bit sore they didn't upgrade their pitching staff before the trade deadline...i hope he works out.
Posted by: MNCubsFan | August 07, 2009 at 11:01 AM
This guy had one bad start against KC, other than that he was good against the division and practically owned the Tigers. Good move - need the innings and experience.
Posted by: jhawk90 | August 07, 2009 at 11:04 AM
I don't know if I like this move, for the Twins. Pavano has been wildly inconsistent from game to game this season. That can kill a team, in the final weeks of the season.
Posted by: dan | August 07, 2009 at 11:05 AM
I don't know about you guys, but I think $1.75 in incentives is a bit cheap. So he pitches 10 outings at 6 IP per, and then can buy a cup of coffee? Sheesh.
Posted by: JPB705 | August 07, 2009 at 11:26 AM
I wish the Red Sox had traded for him rather than bringing Paul Byrd out of mothballs. I don't know if the results would be any better but at least Pavano is ready to pitch now.

JPB705,
Good catch. LOL!!!
Posted by: CubCrazy | August 07, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Not a bad move at all.
He's a solid pitcher who can soak up innings.

Can a brother get a link?
I know you had a lot to drink last night watching the smack down on your favorite team but come on man, if this was a Red Sox story, there would be a link and more of a write-up on it.

yankfan, ben's from toronto and he's a jays fan. just because last night was the greatest night of your life, doesn't mean you have to rub it in everyone's face - especially those who seriously don't care.

Not a bad pick-up for the Twins at all, especially for a PTBNL. Dang EIi, I didn't realize Pavano was 3-0 against the Tigers. There you go, he's valuable for that reason alone.
Posted by: drphonic7 | August 07, 2009 at 12:27 PM
Yankfan,
As non-RedSox and non-Yankees, we learned to be brief and concise in our reports. If we elaborate to long, we will never make the news because it will take away from the Red Sox and Yankees love fest on ESPN. Did you even know that Jake Peavy was traded to the White Sox?
Posted by: CubCrazy | August 07, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Jake Peavy?
Who is he, I only follow Yankees/red Sox news. What is the NL?
Posted by: YankFan408 | August 07, 2009 at 01:00 PM
hahahaa $1.75 in bonuses that made me LOL!
Posted by: skoods | August 07, 2009 at 01:31 PM
Good deal for the Indians, assuming they get someone someday. Now I look forward to the identical trade the Twins will make for Jamey Carroll next week.
Ben,
Is there a process for identifying a PTBNL after the non-waiver trade deadline? Does the player have to be identified after the season or else have to clear waivers himself?
Posted by: TheStockholmSyndrome | August 07, 2009 at 01:32 PM
YanksFan,
I'll send you a link brother.
Posted by: CubCrazy | August 07, 2009 at 01:34 PM
Pavano's got a .332 BABIP and his FIP and xFIP are both a full run lower or more than his actual ERA.
I cringed when I first saw this, but at this point, he can't be any worse than Perkins or Liriano have been.
I was absolutely PRAYING for the Twins to move Perkins this offseason in some kind of package. Perkins has a league average fastball and no secondary pitches to go along with it.
Posted by: MorneauVP | August 07, 2009 at 02:42 PM
The Rumor I heard on the radio is that the PTBNL is a prospect who is currently on the 40 man roster.
Those player can't be part of a deal until the season comes to a end.
The Marlins wanted Pavano but the Indians wanted their top prospect power hitting 3rd baseman in return and for the Marlins to also pay the remainder of Pavano's contract so the Marlins countered with 1 low A top pitching prospect and 1 AA top pitching prospect but the Indians turn the deal down at the deadline according to the Rob Dibble show today on MLB XM.
Posted by: baseballnuts | August 07, 2009 at 05:19 PM
I think this is a good move for the Twins. Pavano has a high ERA, but that's only because of his first start (he gave up 10 runs in under an inning pitched). His FIP has to be lower than Perkins' or Swarcak's.

go get injured now. bad move
Posted by: metsfan4 life | August 07, 2009 at 08:07 PM
Good move for the Twins.
Shapiro/Dolan- You two need to go to the Pirates website and checkout their ticket prices. My Season Tix for the Tribe are almost double for the same ticket at PNC. If you are going to emulate the buccos you better adopt their pricing model.
