Odds & Ends: Halladay, Pujols, Mateo, Benitez

Here's a few links to check out as Roy Halladay makes what might be his final start in Toronto as a member of the home team...

  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian spoke to Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston about Halladay, and what the offseason might hold for him. "If you didn't [have a shot at the playoffs in '10], I think you would maybe think about ''Maybe it is time to move him.'" He also added "I can't make those decisions. They're going to do what's right for the club and certainly Doc's got a little bit of say-so."
  • Rob Neyer of ESPN suggests that Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt wait a year before signing Albert Pujols to an extension because Pujols' value will never be higher than it is right now. What to do you guys think, any chance Pujols actually increases his value next season?
  • Yoel Adames of ESPN Deportes has some quotes from Edgar Mercedes, agent for Wagner Mateo, about a possible lawsuit against the Cardinals. St. Louis voided Mateo's $3.1MM contract earlier this week after finding "pre-existing injuries and physical defects."
  • Bob Nightengale of USA Today says that the "hottest rumor among baseball scouts is that Pat Gillick will be returning to Toronto to become president of the club, but not GM."
  • The Astros released Armando Benitez and the Braves released John Halama, according to this week's edition of minor league transactions, courtesy of Baseball America.

The Cardinals are very big on not signing players to contracts bigger than their stars. To offer Matt Holliday more than $16 million a year would be blasphemous to some people here in St. Louis.

That kind of thinking led to Carpenter's extension. They couldn't go after A.J. Burnett until they bumped up Carpenter.

any way sox get halladay without giving up Clay

What I don't understand about the Wagner Mateo deal is that if He says he can perform to the level He is so sure he is capable of then why is He worried about the dropped contract? Shouldn't he just take the frustration and channel it to work harder and prove to the Cardinals they were wrong. It's not like he isn't going to get another team to sign him to another million dollar deal. To solidify my argument, Why would the money from the lawsuit be so important for him UNLESS his injury is as bad the Cardinals stated.

I personally don't think Pujols is getting resigned by the Cards. They have seemed to want to stay around and under the $100MM mark. You can't designate 1/3 of your teams salary on one guy, and that's what it takes to keep Pujols in St. Louis. Otherwise he becomes one of very few Major League Baseball players to not get greedy. He's in his prime though, there is no way that happens IMO. But hey! There's wishful thinking! And Yes RBM there was a way. Parting with Casey Kelly would have landed us Halladay. Apparantly, no other prospects truly enticed Toronto. I'm thinking Kelly, Bowden, Woodward and Masterson would have gotten the job done. Now substitute another young, quality arm for Masterson.

You'd better not mean 33 year old Chris Woodward.

The things that I've loved, the things that I've lost. The things I've held sacred that I've dropped. I won't lie no more you can bet. I don't want to learn what I'll need to forget

So Pujols is going to get a contract paying him $33.3 million a year? Don't see it. Guessing the Cards extend him an extra six years at about $25 million per.

Considering how well he's doing right now, I don't see it. Especially considering I don't see the Sox giving up Kelly.

Sox don't need to trade for Halladay and I would bet anything they don't even give it serious discussion.

Pujols will ALWAYS be a Card. Every other team can stop fantisizing.

There is no way Pujols doesn't stay with the Cards. He is the franchise and an icon in the city of St. Louis. He is not a whore for money like most major league players. Pujols will give the Cards a hometown discount, and he'll be a Card for life.
