« Odds & Ends: Griffey, Tigers, Torrealba | Main | Giants, Pirates Interested In Igarashi »
The Arizona Diamondbacks will consider making multi-year offers when they look at this year's pitching free agent class, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Although Piecoro notes that GM Josh Byrnes has previously been reluctant to pursue free agent pitching, he writes that Byrnes could go that route this year. The free agent market looks particularly appealing given the Diamondbacks' relative lack of trade chips. Chris Snyder, who they've already discussed in at least one potential trade, has health questions and an unfavorable contract.
As for who the Diamondbacks might pursue, John Lackey is likely out of the question. Piecoro, however, suggests that a pitcher like Randy Wolf, Joel Pineiro, Jason Marquis, or perhaps a strong bullpen arm could be a possibility.
"Just looking at our payroll, we do have some flexibility going into 2011 and 2012," says Byrnes. "I don't think we'd do it just to do it, but if we felt like it was the right guy, we'd do a multiyear."

As of right now, Peavy is signed through the 2010 season.

Sheets maybe, or Wolf would be a solid pick up. But Sheets makes sense if they plan on dumping Webb but want to compete in the next couple years. He would fill the two spot if Webb left. If they can pick up a 1stbaseman for snyder I see no reason why they cant afford a second starter in free agency; since they are suppose to have 20 mil to spend. Or maybe trade Snyder for a number 5 starter sign a number 3 and 1stbaseman then bullpen help.

if the D-Backs somehow landed Lackey, that would be a really scary rotation of Haren/Lackey/Webb - maybe the best in baseball?

If we could land piniero for $8M a year, 2-3 year deal, I'd do it. No more than that. I hear he wants a 3 year $30M deal and in that case, no go. So if we get a steal? Do it.
I'd be ok with wolf I guess. Marquis would demand too much.
No way we can afford Lackey.

Perhaps, but why speculate on something that isn't happening?

So far we only have Webb/Haren and Sherzer. Is it even possible for us to get Brad Penny or Carl Pavano?

They landed Randy Johnson so it's possible. Highly unlikely but possible.

"They landed Randy Johnson" and he's still their third highest paid starting pitcher ($2M deferred in 2010).
