| Tigers Talk: Verlander, Payroll, Free Agents »

Some more links to check out as you celebrate the end of the work week...
- MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez confirms that the Red Sox did indeed meet with John Lackey's agent. This morning we learned that Boston expressed preliminary interest in the free agent hurler.
- ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that the Rangers asked the Rays about outfielder B.J. Upton as part of their offseason routine, but no talks are ongoing.
- Rockies' GM Dan O'Dowd said that they will only look at a one year deal for the arbitration eligible Jorge De La Rosa, according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post.
- ESPN's Keith Law writes that Indians' closer Kerry Wood could be a "nice pickup on the cheap for a team unwilling to go multiple years" on some of the free agent closers. Wood is owed $10.5MM in 2010, with an $11MM club option for 2011 that could vest based on games finished.
- The Pirates intend to be more aggressive in Japan, says MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. Picking up Akinori Iwamura will help put the team on the radar of Japanese players looking to come to the U.S.
- ESPN's Peter Gammons writes about the impact of the economy on the free agent market, among other things.
- Giants' prospect Angel Villalona had his visa revoked by the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, reports Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. Villalona was charged with killing a man in the Dominican back in September.
- Ben Kabak at River Ave. Blues takes a look at each of the Yankees' five arbitration eligible players.

Wow man, I'm a Yankees fan and even I think that is highly uneccessary, whatever happened to friendly competition?
Posted by: Hawkeye86 | November 13, 2009 at 09:05 PM
I could see teams willing to take a chance on Wood rather than trade for a Bobby Jenks or Francisco Cordero. There are a lot of closers available but few of the are truly elite and the ones that are will be expensive.
John Lackey is in a good position. He's the best of a thin free agent class of pitchers. With those as the ingredients, someone is going to overpay. Boston makes sense in that respect, so do the Yankees. I don't see either the Angels Mariners, Dodgers or Brewers being willing to pay over market for him. Not many other teams have the financial wherewithal to sign him.

"TRADE Shelly Duncan for Albert Pujols"
I think I just pissed my pants by laughing too hard
Posted by: yankfan1 | November 13, 2009 at 09:24 PM
money: Really? ESPN cheering for Boston? How hypocritical! They kept saying how the Yankees had to wait "nine LONG years," to win again. They ride the Yankees more than any other team in the universe.
NY will always be better? See '04 (especially the ALCS and the most epic fail of a fail in sports history) and '07. Did NY win or BOS? Where did the Yankees play in the '08 postseason? On a video game!
Arrogant closer? At least their pitchers aren't head hunters like Joba the Butt.
The pink hats support breast cancer. That proved SO much by insulting people for that.
Jay-Z is horrendous, and I hope his "music," is burned.
Ortiz was really good in the second half of last year. What about big, bad Swisher in the postseason? FAIL.
You are a tool.

I would love to see Upton in Wrigley, but I don't want them to trade their top prospects. Their MLB players they could offer wouldn't really fit into the Rays' plans, so that sucks. Here's hoping we get Grandy!

LOL, ESPN supporting the Yankees. U dont watch too much dont you. Have you forgottn the first part of the season saying the yankees have alot of holes and are not as good as the Sox. ESPN rides whatever team wins the WS. Imagine the cubbies, thatll be the biggest riding. They have to wait not 9, not 80 , but 100 years.

How's life working at the local 7-11?
Anyway, unless the Rangers decide to cut bait on Ian Kinsler in an Upton/Hellickson deal, Upton isn't going to Texas. Crazy talk.

This is why people hate "Yankee fans"...
And ESPN has been on the Sox nuts since the 04 playoffs. And Im not saying that as a Yankee fan, but as a baseball fan. They have multiple times called Buchholz better than Halladay....
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | November 13, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Jeeeeez has nobody realized that ESPN rides whoever the best team in baseball is? It was the Red Sox for a while so they jumped on that bandwagon, now its the Yanks so they are riding on that bus. Its not rocket science people, its just the right move to make if you want to make the most money in the media.
And why are all these posts just cheap shots at one anothers team without any relevance to baseball? When did this site become another ESPN board rather than passionate baseball fans looking for a safe haven to talk about the hot stove and multiple teams with as little bias as possible.
Posted by: yanks09 | November 13, 2009 at 11:00 PM
how about the cubs send milton bradley to the indians for kerry wood? The money is even and they essentially did that last offseason anyway. Eric Wedge is gone so no past conflict there. Yeah, I know i'm dreaming...
Posted by: jrodhard | November 13, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Arrogant closer? At least their pitchers aren't head hunters like Joba the Butt."
Ok, this is too easy... At least our 3B didnt charge the mound, throw his helmet, then get thrown down by a skinny 21 year old pitcher.
"Ortiz was really good in the second half of last year. What about big, bad Swisher in the postseason? FAIL."
He was our 4th OF who shouldnt have been starting, but Nady got hurt. At least our $13M DH didnt become EVEN fatter and suck cr** for 1/2 the year.
You see how easy it is? So why dont we act like something more than 10 year old girls, OK?
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | November 13, 2009 at 11:01 PM
yankfan1: Suuuuure. So many people ride the Yankees it's asinine. ESPN calls Mo the best closer ever by far, and they totally ignore Hoffman. Rivera is better, but they never give Hoff ant recognition.
They acted just like the bandwagon Yankees fans, jumping on the A-Rod bandwagon the second he started hitting in the postseason. He went from postseason scapegoat to a baseball god in the ALDS. They talked up all of the positives, but didn't really mention Tex's struggles.
Everyone kept talking up CC beofre Game 1 of the WS, then they jumped ship after Lee killed it, then jumped right back to CC toward the end.
They may not be hardcore Yankee-lovers, but they are the biggest bandwagon NYY fans in the world. "Nine LONG years," my ass.
Oh, and don't forget how ESPN lives in the past to no end. Basically, they are totally delusional. They switch teams every 10 minutes, and they go with past numbers over present ones all of the time.
I think we can all agree that most of the"reporters," and anchors there are a joke and probably steal their stuff from Baseball Prospectus and mlb.com.

"Suuuuure. So many people ride the Yankees it's asinine. ESPN calls Mo the best closer ever by far, and they totally ignore Hoffman. Rivera is better, but they never give Hoff ant recognition."
That's because Rivera is the best closer ever by far. I know Hoffman has more saves but that's just because he's been a closer for 3 more years and has had more chances over his career. But if you look at their ERA's Rivera's ERA of 2.25 is 14th best all time among qualifying pitchers and tops among active pitchers (most of the pitcher's above Rivera played in weaker hitter eras) compared to Hoffman's very respectable 2.74 but that's still a huge difference considering Hoffman has played his entire career in the NL and Rivera has been in the hard hitting AL East his whole career and his ERA+ (202) is by far the highest of any player of all-time. The next closest player is Pedro Martinez and he is only at 154. That's nearly a 50 point difference between him and his next closest competitor. Hoffman's ERA+ is 147 which is 4th all time. However the thing that really sets Rivera apart from Hoffman is the playoff success. While Hoffman hasn't really had much playoff experience, he has an ERA of 3.46 which is respectable just not great while Rivera's postseason ERA is 0.74. Essentially if you see him it's game over. He has only blown 3 saves and 1 loss in his playoff career (compared to 39 saves and 8 wins) and all 3 were 6 out save opps. Now don't get me wrong Hoffman has been a great closer as I just proved it's just Rivera is on another planet from everyone else.
Posted by: ericbrat20 | November 13, 2009 at 11:42 PM
Yea, its not just ESPN. Everyone knows that while they both are HOF, Rivera is the best and possibly the best ever.

Anyone else read the Villalona blurd?
"According to the report, Dominican prosecutor Jose Antonio Polanco said Tuesday that Villalona offered the family of the man he allegedly killed nearly $140,000 to drop the case against him. He alleged the first baseman paid $55,000 and expected to offer another $83,000."
Trying to buy off the family to drop the charges?

""Ortiz was really good in the second half of last year. What about big, bad Swisher in the postseason? FAIL."
He was our 4th OF who shouldnt have been starting, but Nady got hurt."
He's the RF who should have been starting since opening day, and I believe they were splitting time prior to Nady getting hurt. Swisher is better than Nady, and please dont try to say he's not by saying he strikes out a lot or tell me what your eyes see.
Posted by: Deanezag | November 14, 2009 at 12:25 AM
And lets stop trying to say ESPN favors the Yankees, they want them in their games for ratings obviously. Peter Gammons works for them, come on we've all read his nonsense.
Posted by: Deanezag | November 14, 2009 at 12:31 AM
"Peter Gammons works for them, come on we've all read his nonsense."
Not even close. He is the biggest Red Sox fan/Yankee hater in sports. He was born in Boston and raised in Massachusetts. He covered the Red Sox for the Boston Globe and every time it comes to the Yankees he puts them down and praises the Red Sox. I don't know what you've been reading but obviously you must be thinking of someone else.
Posted by: ericbrat20 | November 14, 2009 at 12:43 AM
Boston signing Lackey would be an epic fail. Lackey can NOT pitch well in Fenway. Surely Theo is smart enough to know that...
Posted by: overmind | November 14, 2009 at 12:45 AM
Maybe you're thinking about Buster Olney since he used to be a writer for the New York Times and he covered the Yankees for a long time and he even published a book about the recent Yankees dynasty. He is a huge Yankee fan on ESPN.
Posted by: ericbrat20 | November 14, 2009 at 12:46 AM
IMO ESPN "Analysts" need to be nerdy basement dwellers who analyze the game, not fans of the game.

"Mike Axisa... For some reason it was erased...
But, why would you post something on your site that makes fun of a tunnel in Boston collapsing (which would result in people's deaths)? There is a rivalry, and then there's crossing the line."
Agreed. Kinda tasteless considering it's my job to inspect those exact tunnels to make sure it doesn't happen again. And ironically enough I'm a New York fan (Mets though I hesitantly admit it).

He posted it on "River Ave. Blues". He didn't create it, it was made by a guy named "sic". The name fit's. I don't know why in god's name the link is still up, as this site stand's for something other than page after page of b.s from two side's, over a topic which has nothing to do with MLB Trade Rumors or the like. At least I thought that, once. At first I thought Mike just posted it on the blog, nothing more, nothing less, but when I see a line like "How awesome is that?", I begin to question thing's.

Way to live in the past. You're inviting Yankee fans to bring up they have 27 championships, most in any major sport, not to mention hell of a lot more than Boston. Plus, the most recent one...
And everyone knows ESPN loves Boston. Especially Gammons!

How much are the yankees gonna spend this offseason? They bought the three top free agents last year, and now i think we can pencil in Lackey and Holliday as yankees next year. Make no mistake about it, the 2009 WS was purchased. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial

How much did the RS outspend the Rockies by in 2007? Wasnt it around 80m?
Show me a team with a roster 100% homegrown and that's the only WS not 'purchased.'

Upton isn't going anywhere. It would be an extremely sell low for Tampa and unless they are offered some good prospects, it won't happen.

"Agent- Dont you know Beckett pitches for the Red Sox? That grants him the "bulldog pitcher" label, who plays the game the right way like they did back in the day."

Can we please stop these steroids comments please? Both teams had multiple players doing steroids so it is pointless to try and make fun of the other teams for this. Both teams had players who cheated, hell most teams had players who cheated thats the way the game was back then so quit trying to make fun of other teams players for taking steroids because in the end your only going to look like a hypocrite.

Cubs90210 Talk about tools
you take the prize.Yes the yanks failed in 04 and the Sox's won the WS in 07.
After 13 straight seasons
in the playoffs the Yanks didn't make the playoffs in 08.Wasn't it in 03 when the Cubs needed just 3-4 outs to play in the WS and they choked and lost that game. How many times since then have the LOSERS played in the playoffs?I know that the LOSERS are working on the next 100 years to try and get into the WS.Not every team is going to win every playoff
and WS that they play.At least the Yankees have won
a lot more then they have lost in the WS 27-13.Your LOSERS are pathetic just like YOU!
