Pirates Could Trade Doumit

The latest update from Ken Rosenthal's and Jon Paul Morosi's blog at FOX Sports indicates that the Pittsburgh Pirates are willing to trade Ryan Doumit.

Rosenthal and Morosi hear that multiple teams asked about Doumit's availability at this week's GM meetings, and that the Pirates "would not hesitate" to move him for the right package.

The 28-year-old struggled through an injury-plagued 2009 campaign, posting a .250/.299/.414 line in only 75 games. He's just one year removed, however, from a .318/.357/.501 season in which he played almost exclusively behind the plate. His ability to play multiple positions (including catcher), combined with his power, could make him an attractive option to a handful of teams. The FOX report names the Giants, Mariners, and Rays as good fits, though it doesn't confirm that any of the three teams have expressed interest.

he would be a good fit for the mets if he wasn't an atrocious fielder

he could potentially be a good fit for the mets. The pirates wouldnt expect a huge package, so the mets could easily put something together to get this young, talented catcher

YES! Thank God! I want him gone, but now might not be the best time to get rid of him. Maybe the Pirates should wait to see if his stock can get any higher because it really can't get any lower as is.

I think this is a good move for the Pirates, if they do trade him. Perhaps they could use Doumit to get a good starting pitching prospect or a good middle-reliever. Besides, I think Jason Jaramillo could handle the full-time catching job.

I don't see the Mets jumping on this. The mets already have a catcher in the minors who made quite the splash. He played for my hometown team this past year in AA actually. Josh Thole is worth the wait. Omir will probably be your starter this year because Schneider is garbage but then Thole will definitely be your man.

I wouldn't mind Doumit at 1B or LF for the Braves.

the Braves and Pirates trade with each other? are you crazy that will never happen...sarcasm in full effect

IIRC, Doumit's defense is pretty poor, in which case no thanks.

Why Giants? If the Giants are going to acquire someone to mentor Posey for a season this doesn't seem like the right person. I could see Pudge, or resigning Molina, but bringing in a younger, unpolished guy like Doumit doesn't make much sense.

Right now would be a great time to move Doumit for the Pirates. The FA C pool is pretty weak and no major star C seem to be on the block. This is however dependent on if other teams are willing to pay for the 08 Doumit or 09 Doumit.

On team on that suitors list that is intruiging is Tampa. The Pirates not only need pitching but also a long term answer at SS. TB has a great MLB SS and 2B (Bartlet & Zobrist) and a fantastic prospect at each SS & 2B (Beckham & Rodrigez) and so their fifth MI could be expendable in Ried Brignac. Also a young but semi-failed starter in Sonnenstine could also be packaged with Brignac to see if he can recover in the NL. TB also could still use some pen arms so I propose...

Doumit and Meek

for

Brignac and Sonnenstine

Royals maybe.

Hmm the Braves do kinda fit if you put him in LF/RF/1B and expect his power to rebound. Maybe Hicks, Reyes and a lesser lower SP prospect?

Though I think his value is highest as a C and should be used as such.

khg-I don't really support the idea but I think the thinking for the Giants would be that Doumit could potentially be an everyday player but wouldnt necessarily have to only play catcher. Doumit's ability to play 1st or LF and allowing Ishikawa or Nick Johnson and Lewis or Velez or Bowker to sit vs. lefties would also get Posey more playing time. Sabean and Bochy seem to like guys who play multiple positions. I'm not sure why they wouldnt just use Garko in a similar role though. I know Garko is pretty awful defensively, but is Doumit really any better?

If the Giants are interested, it's because getting Doumit gives them three guys who can catch and play other positions (Posey has played infield). Three good bats and a good deal of managerial flexibility in the daily roster.

The Cincinnati Reds are definitely in the market for a catcher. I can see Jocketty making a run at him.

I think the Pirates could use him as a center piece of a big trade.. Through in Capps and possibly someone else like Moss or Young(neither one has worked out) I think the bucs can get a type B starting pitcher for them

like a Scott Kazmir type pitcher

Kaz is more like a type A.
Trust me, as a guy who lives in W. P.A, and listen's to all the talk, the bucs need to stick to the plan. Low risk/high reward acquisition's and "seller" trade's.

The Pirates definitely have depth at catcher with Jaramillo/Diaz/Clement/Sanchez in the pipeline, but Clement is the only one of those players that could be a similar offensive power producer and he figures in more at 1B with Steve Pearce failing to look ready and Jones needed in RF so that Moss doesn't waste at-bats at the Major League level until Tabata's ready. With that being the case, the Pirates will need Doumit's bat in the line-up until Alvarez is ready to take the clean-up spot - at which point, Sanchez should be that much closer to Major League-ready. I think the Bucs will have to be blown away by an offer (a solid front-end starter or proven lefty relief) to deal Doumit before July.

The Reds are no doubt going to call the pirates about doumit... We have some pretty good relievers we could offer and maybe Valaika a ss/2B AAA player who was our minor league player of the year in 2008

I agree Tomahawk. The Bucs should be listening with Doumit in a C sellers market as well as with Duke and Maholm in a pitcher's sellers market, especially young and pretty good ones. I might be hesitant to trade both of them but if the right trade came along I would.

Let's say a team in a win now mode like the Dodgers or Brewers (or to a lesser extent the Phils) who are a bit cash strapped and need a few starters came in and offered a very nice package for both of Duke & Maholm I would certainly take it.

@thegiantswinthepennant

Yeah, although I think Garko's going to be non-tendered, but to be honest I'd rather the Giants keep pursuing Uggla. I'd rather have his lousy defense and solid pop instead of Doumit's lousy defense medium pop and injury prone nature.

If someone will pay for the 2008 Doumit right now, that would probably be a good deal that Huntington would take. For the Pirates, he really should only be playing catcher, as they've got a top prospect coming up next year to play their missing corner OF and 1B is now Garrett Jones.

If he can fetch a good shortstop and maybe a pitching prospect, I say go for it.

I'll pass on Doumit coming to SF he doesn't make our offense much better

reds should being calling the pirates about this ther are in SERIOUS need of a catcher who hit, play the field decent i agree with someone said earlier valakia/dickerson for doumit

I think Doumit makes a ton of sense for the Mariners. Getting Doumit would allow them to field offers with Moore as the center piece which makes the level of talent they could acquire, significantly better. Doumit and Johnson behind the plate would be a good combination, with Johnson catching the picky pitchers like Felix and Bedard (if he returns), Doumit could catch Morrow, R.R.S. and Snell, since he's familiar with Snell from their days together in Pitt. I think the Mariners could swing Doumit for Daniel Cortes and maybe Joe Dunigan a future 1B, who could allow the Pirates to move Clement to catcher in a couple years. Dunigan is the perfect fit for Pitt., he plays LF, RF, 1B, has some speed, lots of power, and can draw walks, he's around 22 or 23 years old and is going to be in AA in 2010. I hope the Mariners go for Doumit or to a lesser extent Zaun for their veteran catcher. Thank God Varitek is going back to the Red Sox, otherwise I think he just might have ended up back with Seattle, which I can live without.

how about a maholm and doumit for cozart/valakia and a pitcher or so

is that not enough to much ?

As a M's fan I wouldn't want to see us trade Cortes+ for Doumit, sure there's some sentimental value in bringing in Doumit (not really, but he is from Washington)...

As a Braves fan I say no thanks to Doumit.

I would prefer to re-sign LaRoche for 1st and let Diaz and Heyward play the OF over him.

doumit could be a nice fit for a lot of teams.
one, for the reason mentioned above: you could rotate him between C, 1B and OF.
he's not athletically gifted but he's the classic 'scrappy' guy who can make the unexpected great play just on effort.
also, he could be an excellent six or seven hitter in a solid-hitting squad (like swisher for yanks)
one more: he's not a classic power hitter, more doubles-type, and a switcher, so he might be less likely neutralized by a ballpark, so in that sense, all of mets/m's/giants work

If the Pirates do trade Doumit for a shortstop, it would likely have to be one that was MLB ready. Chase d'Arnaud is likely the SS of the future, but he is starting at AA in 2010. Speculation is he could be ready in mid 2011. So trading for a SS prospect that is a year or 2 off probably is not the best.

The Pirates catcher of the future is likely Tony Sanchez, the 1st round pick this year - likely to start in high A in 2010. Clement will certainly not catch. Jason Jaramillo or Robinzon Diaz could do an OK but not great job until then. But it seems unlikely that Huntington will go with replacement level SS and C for 2 years until then.

"As a Braves fan I say no thanks to Doumit.

I would prefer to re-sign LaRoche for 1st and let Diaz and Heyward play the OF over him."

Agreed. But he could be a cheap contingency plan if LaRoche doesn't return.

The best bet for the Pirates, is to hope for, as MarkInDallas put it, an MLB ready SS. Odd's are, you won't get someone with much potential, and you'll be stuck waiting for a few year's to see him in the show.

"I'll pass on Doumit coming to SF he doesn't make our offense much better."

I see the Giants being dead-set on bringing pudge in to mentor young Buster on the "art of catching". On one hand, you have a better bat with Doumit, on the other you have pudge's experience, and his ability to mentor young catcher's. But, because Posey is so young, the odd's of him getting regular playing time are stacked against him, so a back-up catcher with a decent bat would pay dividends.

for the pirates fans that want to be clear of doumit - why?

Some of the comments in here are pretty funny.

Ryan Doumit is a monster waiting to be unleashed if he had any real protection. Think mini-Jason Bay.

The only way the Pirates deal him is for a +4 WAR package and if Huntington takes less than he's a bigger fool than I think he is.

BravosFan.. I live in Binghamton too.. You think Thole is that good?

Trade the KC Royals:

Pirates Get:
Alberto Callaspo
Low-Mid Level Pitching Prospect
Mike Jacobs

Royals Get:
Ryan Doumit
Matt Capps

My thinking is that Callaspo could be used as a SS. (does have some experience there) This would also allow Clement to take over the catching duties until Sanchez is ready (2 years or so) Jacobs could be played at 1B which would give Jones the opportunity to play RF. No need to sign an expensive FA aka Ankiel

Why should the Pirates trade for Mike Jacobs, when he has virtually no value? The Pirates also have a glut of SS prospects working their way up through the minors, with Friday, Cunningham, D'Arnauld and Mercer.

Considering the Jays were attached to Snyder, why aren't they considered a destination for Doumit?

Jacobs won't come anywhere near the Pirates roster nor will Clement ever be catching on a regular basis. Not happening.

And how does the BaseballGuru think Clement will ever catch again? I thought he was incredibly knowledgeable of his team; if that were the case, he would clearly know Clement's knees are shot.

Mike Jacobs is horrible. Guy doesn't deserve a major league paycheck.

I like Callaspo though, but I don't know if I buy him at short.

piratefan, Sorry to pile on, but. . . You want to move Callaspo, a bad 2b to ss. You want to move Clement back from 1b to c. Clement was not a good c before his knee surgery. Jacobs lost the 1b job in KC to Billy Butler, who isn't a very good 1b himself. You're downgrading three defensive positions, two of them up-the-middle, gaining offensively at only one, giving up your most reliable reliever, and not saving much money. I don't think these moves would work out well.

Rereading my post, insert the word "defensive" into the phrases "a bad 2b," "not a good c," and "isn't a very good 1b."

Doumit and Meek

for

Brignac and Sonnenstine

Posted by: bbxxj | November 12, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Not a bad idea i doubt they trade Meek though, how bout....
Doumit and Capps

For

Reid Brignac SS, LHP Jake McGee, and another mid tier to lower level prospect?

yea right now in the pirates organization Chase D'Arnaud is the SS of the future but the kid also plays 2B and can play some 3B Also... so if the pirates were to get a Reid Brignac he and Ronny Cedeno would be a great combo with Cedeno being a nice back up at SS and 2B to Brignac and Iwamura, and then if Andy LaRoche hits well next year u can move Iwamura at the Deadline and let Andy play 2B and let Chase D'Arnaud further his skills he wont likely be ready for awhile though prob not until summer 2011 or 2012, like neil says too much competition is never a bad thing and the pirates arent at the point yet to where they can just set a part starting jobs for guys who they "think" will be good they need to keep acquiring as much talent as possible and see what happens

this is a waste of time.

the pirates aren't trading doumit.

other teams are asking.. the pirates aren't shopping him.

they will listen to all offers.no one on their team or any other is untouchable.

if someone wants to overpay drastically for him (which isn't going to happen considering the down year and injuries etc..)
they will trade him otherwise it isn't happening at least not for another 2 1/2 seasons..
