« Heyman On Damon, Lackey, Crede | Main | Braves Announce Tim Hudson Extension »
THURSDAY, 1:33pm: The Nationals have officially named Riggleman their manager, according to a team press release.
WEDNESDAY, 6:08pm: The Washington Nationals will bring back interim manager Jim Riggleman in 2010, according to Jim Bowden of Sirius XM's MLB Home Plate (via Twitter). Bowden does not have any specific details yet, but says the deal "is done."
Riggleman took over the as the Nationals' skipper halfway through 2009, leading the club, which was 26-61 at that point, to a 33-42 record over the rest of the season.
Riggleman had been considered the favorite to earn the full-time job throughout the search, despite the team considering higher profile candidates, such as Bobby Valentine.

Bowden seems an odd source for that kind of information, but I won't be surprised if it is true. I don't now whether to be happy or uninspired if it is.

I've got no problem with this.
perhaps Valentine did the same "I can coast on my past reputation without learning anything about the team I am supposed to manage" thing in his Nats interview that he did in his Indians one.

coming from jim bowden, i don't believe it just yet.
i'll be looking for an official announcement from the team tomorrow. If it's Riggleman, I'm happy for him. In Rizzo we trust!

I am a Braves fan but I do want to see the Nationals pull themselves up from the bottom. I would love to be part of the front office that turns that team around.

Why then your team would be on the bottom?
I'm just kidding. Glad to see Bobby V is still around for my Mets when Manuel gets fired in mid May.

I'm sure Bowden still has some contacts in the Nats' FO. He really couldn't have alienated everybody.
"Why not?" you may ask. Well, he screws up repeatedly and still gets jobs, so he must have something going for him.

SuperSteve why do u think Bobby V is the answer? It may not be Jerry but its not bobby either. He led a team full of healthy players to a record worse than an injured team that Manuel had..AND that team talent wise was better than the injured mess the Mets were sending out.
I just dont get the fascination mets fans have with a guy that last managed a Met team to last place and 4th place with healthy clubs.
and before a M

A Met fans says the 2000 team was horrible..no it wasnt.

"Bobby V" led the Mets to an NLCS and World Series in back-to-back years. He was then fired after Mo Vaughn and Roberto Alomar started going downhill and he was saddled with an OF of Timo Perez, Jeromy Burnitz, and Roger Cedeno - all OBP killers.
Oh, and having to see Jeff D'Amico, Pedro Astacio, and Mike Bacsik account for over half your team's starts? Not good. Not sure that's all on the manager.

a lot of Nats fans elsewhere are reacting with outrage that Riggles won out over Valentine.
bleh.
much, much, more important that hiring a Celebrity Manager, is what Rizzo and the Lerners do once Free Agency starts and at the Winter Meetings.
I'm saving my outrage until them.
we could hire Jesus as our Manager, but unless the Lerners open up their wallets to allow Rizzo to get the players we need to improve the team, we'll still be the worst team in baseball.

Amen. I second this.
And for what it's worth, local DC sports radio and tv is reporting the Riggleman news as well.

I value Bobby V's input on espn's baseball tonight, so I'm glad he didn't get the job lol.

"R.I.P. Stephan Strasburg's Right Arm"
I hear ya! I hope that they actually bring him along at a decent pace, but I have my doubts.

Good news. I'm glad he got the job. Sometimes it's hard to give a hard-working local guy a break when you can sign an expensive imported manager who has no experience with the current group of guys. Tit for Tat I suppose.

WOW WHO CARES THERE JUST GOING TO FIRE HIM HALF WAY INTO THE SEASON ANYWAY?!
