Marlins Release Renyel Pinto

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 23, 2010 at 3:50pm CDT

The Marlins released lefty Renyel Pinto, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (via Twitter). It's been a busy day for the Marlins, who fired manager Fredi Gonzalez and have already started contacting potential replacements. Pinto was designated for assignment a week ago, so his release is less of a surprise than his former manager's firing.

Pinto, 28 next month, had a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings for Florida this year, striking out 16 and walking nine. He is under team control for both the 2011 and 2012 seasons, so he figures to draw some interest as a free agent.

The Marlins released left-hander Hunter Jones yesterday and it looks like he'll undergo Tommy John surgery. Unlike Jones, Pinto can help a team this year.

D-Backs should be in on ANYBODY with a sub-7 ERA.

The only thing he will help a team do is give up runs.

No seriously. I can’t seem to find anything in the articles. For example, with Hunter, it took 3 posts to find out he needed Tommy John surgery and that’s part of the reason he was released. Should I have to fish? I haven’t been following him this year at all. I know that he gave up that homerun to Hamilton a few weeks ago, but with teams with bullpens who have 5 for an era, you think that they would be able to get someone for him. Still, I don’t know what the answer is.

After watching the Pirates pitching staff, that doesn’t sound like a negative. So it sounds like his era is low because he is letting his inherited runners come in to score.
