Cla Meredith Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 30, 2010 at 1:26pm CDT

JUNE 30: Meredith cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple A Norfolk, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

JUNE 22: The Orioles designated Cla Meredith for assignment, according to the team. The 27-year-old sidearmer has a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings with the O's this year, posting 4.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9. Meredith, who last pitched in the majors on May 27th, was acquired for Oscar Salazar last year. Since his late-May demotion to Triple A, Meredith has a 13.50 in five appearances.

The Orioles demoted Chris Tillman to make room for recent acquisition Jake Fox on the 25-man roster, but they needed 40-man roster space so Meredith loses his spot.

Does MacPhail have a mancrush on Atkins? how is this guy making it on the team this long when all he does every single day is ride the bench? He does nothing but take up a spot. i would really like to know what his “Major” plan is please……

The thinking is that Atkins will get DFA’ed and Bergesen called up when the O’s need a 5th starter. Presumably this is to give Bergesen an additional start in AAA.

Meredith produced 2 WAR while with the Padres and Bard produced 4.8 WAR while in their uniform. In the rest of his time with the Red Sox, Mirabelli contributed -0.1 WAR. So…still pretty awful.

I remember him getting shelled (I think walked the bases loaded and let up a grandy) way back in like 05 for the sox. Shame, at the time the scuttlebutt was that he was “ruined” by the Boston staff and/or coming up too early.

Not sure that was it, they said the same thing about Craig Hansen also. Whatever the reason, he sure had the “Dave Stapleton” career path.. Regressed every single year played, just didn’t last 7 years and as awful as was last year, hard to see him being any worse…

Tillman is only 21. Relax! He needs more time (at AAA or MLB, doesn’t matter) to work on his control. The strike zone doesn’t change based on the level you’re at. He has above average to plus secondary stuff, and would be a much better MLB pitcher if he could throw that secondary stuff for a strike. He reminds me a lot of Mike Mussina, especially since he was the last O’s pitcher to utilize the knuckle curve. However, Moose had great control and that was what made him a potential HoF pitcher. Tillman has time, and a lot of it to figure it out.

Chris Tillman had an ERA of 8.40, a WHIP of 2.20, 7 Ks, 8 BBs, and all that in only 14 innings of work. I think he’s got some issues he’s got to get squared away.

Hope Hendry doesn’t hear the news about Meredith. He”ll make sure to sign him to a 3 year/ 100 million contract. Then designate Starlin Castro for assignment

By the way, did anyone look at the drop Meredith took in his career? I remember him setting up Hoffman and being a really good.
