Indians Sign Saul Rivera

By Zachary Links | August 22, 2010 at 5:31pm CDT

The Indians have signed reliever Saul Rivera and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus, according to the team's transactions page.  This marks the righthander's second stint with the Tribe.

Rivera, 32, was shipped from Cleveland to Arizona in May for cash considerations.  The D'Backs went on to designate the veteran for assignment in June and release him in August.

From 2006 through 2008, Rivera found a role in the Nationals bullpen as he posted a 3.72 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9.  However his fortune turned in 2009 when he delivered a 6.10 ERA with 4.9 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9.

So the Indians signed Saul Rivera after he was realeased by the Nats, then traded him to the Diamondbacks, then after he was released, he was signed by the Indians. I wonder if he’s friends with another fellow nomad, Brett Wallace.

Nah. He was once a rubber armed reliever for Acta in Washington. He had a few good years for Acta. The Indians have gotten solid relief help from Perez left and Perez right,
Herrmann and Smith. He’s there for depth and to make sure they’re covered at AAA. The AAA guys are young, and some of the starters and some relievers may be on inning limits. Extra relief help will be useful for them about now.

I remember once talking about Carrasco with you. You are an Indians fan right? Joe Gardner is the man.

The Padres own my heart and soul, and the Indians are my AL team.

My mother grew up in Cleveland and was a life long fan. She was always a little put out when everyone talked about the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson; she felt her beloved Indians didn’t get the credit they deserved for bringing Larry Doby to their team.
