Padres Sign Edwin Moreno

The Padres have signed 17-year-old Dominican outfielder Edwin Moreno, reports Baseball America's Ben Badler.  The contract is worth $500K.

Moreno was described as a "left-handed outfielder with pop and a strong body" by Blake Bentley on his list of the top 10 Dominican prospects leading up to the opening of the international signing deadline last July 2.  Moreno wasn't signed, however, due to failing a drug test administered to 40 prospects who registered with Major League Baseball last May.  As Badler notes, Moreno won't face a 50-game suspension since he wasn't signed to a contract when he failed his test.

Anyone know what drug he tested positive for?

The Padres remind me of the ’08 Rays, ’10 Rangers, and ’13 Royals. Someday, all of their international spending and spending on the draft will pay off.

Fantastic organization and I can’t wait to see what Moreno will do in their organization.

The Royals farm system is loaded. I think the Royals will make some noise before 2013. The Padres also have a well stocked farm system, particularly with pitching [both starters and bullpen guys].

  3. long time ago but he tested positive for stanazolol supposedly in a tainted supplement from GNC… its one of the strongest steroids and in a country with much more lenient food and drug regulations this is entirely possible
