Werth Agrees To Deal With Nationals

By Zachary Links | December 4, 2010 at 3:32pm CDT

Free agent outfielder Jayson Werth has agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).  Werth signing with the Nats would be a surprise, though the pairing does make sense.  Washington now has money to spend after losing Adam Dunn in free agency and needs to replace the bopper's bat in the lineup.

It was said earlier this week that the most serious suitors for Werth were the Phillies, Tigers, and Red Sox.  Boston met with Werth on Wednesday though contract terms were not discussed.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki first reported that the two sides were nearing agreement.

Nationals keep being spurned by FA’s when they offer more money and the FA’s don’t sign. Nationals need someone to take them serious, as they have a serious chance at least in 2012.

Young team on the rise where he can make an impact. Why doesn’t this make any sense? Already won in Philly, doesn’t have to move that far, less pressure. If he signs first Crawford’s price is going to skyrocket between the Halo’s, Sox, Rangers and Yanks bidding on him.

In the voice of Michael Buffer, Let’s get ready to judge posts !

        Quick Guide to Commas
        1. Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet.

        2. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.

        3. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Use one comma before to indicate the beginning of the pause and one at the end to indicate the end of the pause.

        4. Do not use commas to set off essential elements of the sentence, such as clauses beginning with that (relative clauses). That clauses after nouns are always essential. That clauses following a verb expressing mental action are always essential.

        5. Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series.

        6. Use commas to separate two or more coordinate adjectives that describe the same noun. Be sure never to add an extra comma between the final adjective and the noun itself or to use commas with non-coordinate adjectives.

        7. Use a comma near the end of a sentence to separate contrasted coordinate elements or to indicate a distinct pause or shift.

        8. Use commas to set off phrases at the end of the sentence that refer back to the beginning or middle of the sentence. Such phrases are free modifiers that can be placed anywhere in the sentence without causing confusion.

        9. Use commas to set off all geographical names, items in dates (except the month and day), addresses (except the street number and name), and titles in names.

        10. Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation.

        11. Use commas wherever necessary to prevent possible confusion or misreading.

one could say it’s not looking good, but my idea of the best case scenario was always to sign Beltre and trade for Upton.

Those probably won’t happen either, BUT there’s still hope for my own personal “best case scenario”.

If the sox were willing to give up their #1,3 and 6 prospects for one cheap season of AGON (and then signing him for close to what he’d get on the open market) they should be willing to do the same for a 23 year old kid signed for much much longer for much much less…

      Ellsbury
      Pedroia
      Youkilis
      Papi
      Beltre
      Drew
      Upton
      Salty
      Scutaro/Lowrie.

What really scares me though, is the small sample size of Lowrie’s success last year brainwashing Theo into thinking he can take over at 3rd and Scutaro play SS full time. That would not be good for anybody involved.

How are they getting killed?? He’s got a point. They won 89 games playing without their leadoff hitter, allstar/MVP/GG/team leader/2nd hitter, and their cleanup hitter/MVP candidate/allstar/GG/team leader…

they also had their all star closer have a down season, add to that Beckett and Lackey having little to no chance of being that bad collectively ever again and you’ve got yourself a team that still looks pretty good.

Providing they can make one move offensively (crawford or beltre) they will be very very competitive.

And a foot of snow isn’t all that much.. i remember having 4 feet of snow still on the ground as i looked for easter eggs as a child..

The next time Dave Dombrowski gets into a bidding war for a high priced free agent will be the first. Boston and the Angels now have one good choice for an outfield bat, and that’s Crawford. He figures to get more than Werth did. I don’t see the Tigers going that high.

Werth can play any OF position extremely well, no way they move him to 1b now. Maybe if Werth has lost some range in 4 years they move him to 1b so harper can play OF, but no time in the near future will he play anything other than OF.

It tough to say, he’s so highly touted that I have heard as early as 2012 he could be up. Also about the comment of not having Ryan Howard to hit by, I would make the argument that Ryan Zimmerman is a tradeoff from Ryan Howard. Higher average but a little less power. And I know Werth also hit by Utley, but Utley was hurt for much of the season and Werth still proved he could perform without him.

      I’ll go with 5/85.

6 years would be awesome though…That would mean 3 years of Werth/Harper/Zimmerman…And Alberto Gonzalez as well.

Yeah first I read about the Gonzo deal falling through…then Werth signing with the Nats?!?!?

Yes of course there is still Crawford, but now that Werth is gone, Crawford’s price is gonna go through the roof! 3 (maybe 4) team with cash to burn (Red Sox, Angels, Tigers, Yankees) all bidding on one outfield…this is going to be insane!

Came out of nowhere you guys are crazy. This deal has long been in the making everyone who knows anything about the nats knew this was going on, its been all over the place. My sources have been telling me this for awhile. Crawford isnt going to sign with LAA/NYY/Boston either, hes going to sign with the padres, or so my sources say. Also pitts is in on lee.

Oh and I forgot, “Generic how this effects boston and how the fans are hitting the panic button and pissing blood and yanks rejoicing comment”

LOL So nats can give money away to sign players and A’s cant?

A’s at least were .500 last yr and with a great pitching staff. The bay area is a great place to live and one of the biggest media markets in the usa.

Of course it comes back to the stadium

This really reminds me of when Detroit got Magglio. A great veteran presence to add to the lineup with good defense. This makes Josh Willingham tradeable and they could net a good return for him and his .380 OBP, or plug him in the lineup at LF with Zimmerman and Werth and have a great heart of the order, especially with Bryce Harper on the Way.

He was looking for about 6/90, so which is $15 per year. So, go about 7/105-110.

ahh okay.. i would think they Nats need to blow him out of the water for him to sign there though..especially with the news that Boston’s deal has fallen through.. I would expect them to overpay for him.

Werth is a good player but to have him as the face of your team making big time money makes no sense at all.Now i can see why the Nats are in last place year year. The Nats have a bad farm system as well so the future doesnt look good at all

You do realize he played under 100 games right. Yes, he did struggle some
Your missing the point that now if they want the likes of Crawford, Gonzalez or Beltre, the price will be HUGE!

Well, Red Sox Nation, you’ve lost the chance to sign Werth, now it looks like the AGon trade is not going to get done, the Rangers or Angels looks like where Crawford is going to end up, so it looks like Theo is left holding the bag. Not a good day.

Werth signing with the Nationals is the best news for Red Sox fans. Werth won’t be worth the money. Losing out on A-Gon won’t be the end of the world for Boston either if they’re able to bring back Beltre and sign Crawford.

So the Sox may have lost out on A-gon and definitely lost out on Werth in the same day. I was so happy yesterday too. I haven’t felt this insane drop in emotion about the Sox since the 2003 ALCS.
