West Notes: Beane, Minaya, Rockies

By Dan Mennella | November 20, 2011 at 11:18pm CDT

Some linkage from the West Coast as this Sunday night winds down …

  • On Sunday we heard that Bud Selig will meet with the Giants regarding the Athletics' potential relocation to San Jose. If that relocation falls through, however, don't be surprised if Oakland GM Billy Beane winds up with the Dodgers once the franchise is sold, tweets Peter Gammons of MLB Network.
  • The Padres have talked to former Mets GM Omar Minaya about a front office job, a source tells Dan Hayes of the North County Times (Twitter link). It's likely for an advisor role, tweets Corey Brock of MLB.com, who adds that other teams are interested in Minaya, as well.
  • The trade of Ty Wigginton to the Phillies isn't the precursor to another move, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd tells Troy Renck of the Denver Post (via Twitter). Seems like the Rox were seeking some salary relief.

Billy Beane with the Dodgers, now that’d really be interesting.

what in the world makes him think that it would happen? there were some good GM positions already open this fall..cubs, bosox i dont even think he interviewed for either one of them. We all know the story of how he turned down serious cash to GM in oakland, what makes the dodgers so much better than the cubs or bosox?  Cubs have one of the strongest fan bases in all of sports and besides a collapse (not gms fault) the bosox were one of the best teams last year…i think its just gammons making stuff up because from what i know i have yet to read or hear anything stating this before his little post

the Dodgers fanbase is as strong as the Cubs is, or at least very close to it. The pressure of being GM in Boston sounds miserable, and also he grew up in Southern California

Its a scouting job the Padres have spoken with Minaya about, not front office as far as I have heard

I’m pretty sure the Sox are offering Minaya Craig Shipley’s old job as director of international scouting and player development.

The media is continuing to try and promulgate this Billy Beane myth of all-knowing brilliance and it’s no longer working. He wanted the Cubs job; the Cubs didn’t want *him*.
How can Gammons speculate on the new Dodgers GM without knowing when the team is going to be sold nor to whom?

lol, no way did Beane ever want that Cubs job, that was another pure speculation tweet that got blown up and reported.

Can we just stop taking speculation as truth for once? If Beane says publicaly “I want the Cubs job” then yes, he wants it. But if journalist #21436 tweets “I think Beane wants the Cubs job” that doesnt ever mean its ever been said by the man himself. There’s so much stuff pulled out of thin air these days it makes me sick.

Gammons has been saying Beane to the Dodgers since he bailed on the Red Sox nearly 10 years ago. Maybe one day he will be right and can say, “see, I knew it for all these years! I am a genius! That is why I am in the Hall of Fame. My ability to see into the future!”

Like he was hitting College draft choice predictions before they were announced? The guy has good sources. Nobody is correct all the time and it’s not like he was out there announcing a FA signing all over the world just last week like a few other huge writers some people here seem to trust so much.

I’m surprised that no article has gone out there yet about Greg Halman of the Mariners getting stabbed to death this morning.

Why on earth would Beane ever leave Oakland for the Dodgers? He’s said over and over again he’d never leave, and is also part-owner of the team.

I fail to see O’Dowd’s logic in trading Wigginton while retaining Giambi. At least Wiggy can help in the field and he also bats right-handed.

Billy Beane would be great for the new owner of the Dodgers ( Colletti is worthless) BUT I dont think he will ever leave Oakland!
