The Angels will look to trade right-hander Rich Thompson over the next few days before placing him on waivers, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez (via Twitter). However, Gonzalez adds that it's hard to envision a taker for him given the drop in his velocity.
Thompson, 27, was designated for assignment by the Halos early Saturday morning. The right-hander posted a 3.00 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 54 innings for the Angels in 2011 and may be claimed if he is ultimately waived.

Red Sox send Michael Bowden, Darnell McDonald and half a dozen rotten eggs to Anaheim for Thompson, but if (AND ONLY IF) he smuggles Mike Trout in his luggage. There, it’s settled.
How about we loan you Trout so he gets big league at bats until my Vernon Wells voodoo doll works? Then of course we get Littlefish back.
I assume loans aren’t allowed in the MLB since I never heard of one happening. I know it was a joke but still interesting to think about…the soccer approach.
How about we sent Wells, Aberu, Thompson for a some Fried Chickens and 6 pack of Sam Adams.
Or… Wells, Abreu (the new bat boys in Pawtucket) and Thompson (who’s stashed Bourjos and Trout in his carry-on bag) for John Lackey and all the Popeye’s and Sam Adams he can have Darnell McDonald carry back to Anaheim. Don’t worry, I’ve already taken the liberty of notifying the MLB central office.
