Reed Johnson Likely Traded

The Cubs removed Reed Johnson from today's game and it appears that the outfielder has been traded, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports (on Twitter). Four teams made offers for Johnson today, including the Pirates and Tigers, according to Levine.

Johnson, 35, has a .307/.361/.452 batting line in 180 plate appearances this year. The right-handed hitter has played all three outfield positions for the Cubs and owns a career .313/.370/.469 line against left-handed pitching. He's signed to a one-year, $1.15MM contract and will hit free agency after the season.

Guess it made too much sense for the Braves…..at least we’ve got Hinske! *Sigh*

  3. JakeD 3 years ago

Hmm, I liked Reed alot, but I hope he’s packaged with someone who will reap more/better prospects.

Amateur lip-reader here, but I’m fairly sure I saw him say the word “Detroit” when he was shaking hands in the dugout.

      really or trolling? (detroit fan)

      • Todd Smith 3 years ago

I mean I’m not 100% sure that’s what he said, obviously…but I thought I saw “Detroit”, then came here and saw the Tigers we’re interested.

    • undocorkscrew 3 years ago

      Turned out to be correct…..

    • Todd Smith 3 years ago

Jon Heyman says not the Tigers.

Stop giving me hope that it’s the Braves……

Tim Brown says not the Dodgers…also heard not the Pirates or Giants…

I’m betting it is the san francisco giants, he fits the need for an OF who hits lefties.

    • mu_Zak 3 years ago

I’ve been on this guy for my Giants- but somehow i think Sabean low balled and got beaten by a team that recognized the true value of this guy.

  6. TheLagooned 3 years ago

Hope it is the Braves. Johnson is a nice piece.

  7. MikeEsq 3 years ago

Bruce Levine of ESPN1000 says it’s to the Giants. He’s usually on top of things.

Breaking news: Ryan Dempster has rejected the Reed Johnson trade.

  9. TheoHoyer 3 years ago

Wow, totally didn’t expect the Cubs to make a deadline move

  10. mu_Zak 3 years ago

Sabean you donkey! THIS guy could’ve helped you SO much more than the pipe dreams of Pence…

  11. Is Neal Huntington dealing exclusively with teams the Pirates are playing at the moment? Wouldn’t mind Reed Johnson on the Buccos, depending on who they’re losing for him. Still hoping the Bucs are going bigger this year.

  12. $17049574 3 years ago

Tigers still need an OF and have young pitching.

  13. Cosmo3 3 years ago

That’s a damn solid slash line. He will at least make a great platoon/bench player to help solidify a playoff team. Any guesses as to what we might have gotten for him?

    • DT Flush234 3 years ago

Displinary problems didnt run out a play according to reports.

    • St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, “Mo found strangled after trading Taveras to cubs”

    • Patrick Beliveau 3 years ago

I hope you realize OT wont get traded for Reed Johnson…

  15. DT Flush234 3 years ago

Johnson fits in with the Cardinals a lot. He would be that RH OF there looking for.

  16. BaseballBeisbol 3 years ago

I like his game. He is a good baseball player and someone you can confidently plug into any of the three OF spots. Will be a solid grab for whoever gets him.

  17. undocorkscrew 3 years ago

    Looks like it’s Detroit

  18. Robert Daniels 3 years ago

Looks like Detriot. Apparently P prospect Thmoas Collier was just pulled from a game.

  19. Traded along with 2 pies from Eduardo’s to STL for Tyler Greene, 5 cases of Schlafley, 10 Ted Drewes concretes, and a trip for 2 up the arch in September.

    Geo too!? Theo, you genius!

Same thing just happened to Soto…lots happening!!!

  22. Adam Roy 3 years ago

Cubs reporter carrie muskat and jon morosi say that geo is getting hugs too. Maybe he and johnson are going together?

  23. Jake Willock 3 years ago

It looks as if Soto has been traded as well. He just got pulled from the game and is hugging everyone in the dugout.

  24. bigpat 3 years ago

Soto said his goodbyes as well, wonder if they’re a package deal or separate teams?

    • Todd Smith 3 years ago

I would assume separate deals since they were pulled an inning apart. Same deal, they probably would have both been pulled at the same time, I would think.

      • undocorkscrew 3 years ago

Rosenthal says separate deals. You’re on a roll!

  25. rickroscoe 3 years ago

He’s a versatile and consistent 4th OF who murders LHP. Someone got a nice little addition for the playoff push.

  26. mas419 3 years ago

I hope this isn’t to the Giants! We don’t need a cheap bench bat, we need an impact bat like Hunter Pence! But he meets the “35 or older” requirement of guys Sabean goes out and gets.

  27. Robert Daniels 3 years ago

Brett Jackson has been pulled from his AAA game. I would assume he’s getting the call-up

  28. undocorkscrew 3 years ago

    Soto to Rangers
