Phillies Release, Re-Sign Ronny Cedeno

By Jeff Todd | March 30, 2014 at 2:14pm CDT

SUNDAY: The Phillies tweeted they have re-signed Cedeno to a minor league deal and have assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

TUESDAY: The Phillies have released infielder Ronny Cedeno, the club announced. Cedeno had looked to be a decent bet to make the roster, especially with Freddy Galvis shelved to start the season.

The 31-year-old spent last season with the Padres and Astros, putting up a combined .242/.287/.330 line in 288 plate appearances. It is probably fair to say that is a good approximation of his true talent, as both Cedeno's career line (.246/.289/.354) and his spring line (.182/.250/.273 in 24 plate appearances) are to much the same effect. Defensive metrics have never been big fans of Cedeno's work in the field, and his numbers took a downturn last year. At short, where he spent most of his time, Cedeno was graded at -7.6 UZR and -5 DRS in only 627 2/3 innings.

With the news, the Opening Day odds increase for Cesar Hernandez and Reid Brignac, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes on Twitter.

Tigers and Mets fans should be drooling over this one….

Nah, Mets had him once before, nothing too exciting.

For the mets, he is a definite upgrade over omar Quintanilla at minimum. They should definitely look into bringing him back.

More likely they are crying and simply wiping their tears down so it looks like they are drooling.

The Tigers are reportedly not interested. They are instead mulling over trading Max Scherzer to the D’Backs for Didi Gregorious.

Why would the D’Backs take him back? He already failed them once.

Not sure where you heard that but Scherzer for Didi makes no sense. Arizona wants young controllable pitching and the Tigers need a SS for 1 year only. Also, adding Didi and removing Scherzer makes the Tigers worse in 2014, that trade makes zero sense.

I was being sarcastic, since the Tigers are trading established players for unproven ones recently.

    Probably too young for Amaro.

I’m rooting for them to keep Hernandez. But Brignac’s wife/girlfriend is gorgeous, so I wouldn’t mind seeing her around.

Infielder who can’t hit or play defense… hmm seems like he shouldn’t be getting to play in the majors

Makes you wonder what kind of conversations are being had in that Phillies front office.
