If the Jays offered 4/$80, 4/$92, $12M more shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Get it done Shapiro!! Just don’t give a no trade clause. He could be a trade candidate in year 3 or 4.
Nick4747
He’d have 10-5 rights by then anyways. And they pretty much said goodbye to him with the morales signing figuring as e5 hasn’t played 90 games in the field since 2010. I know they said the blue jays are still rumored to be talking to him but that’s gotta be just in case his market falls entirely.
Monty725
True on the 10-5 but money talks if the situation ever comes up. If EE can play 100 games, Morales can play the rest. I’m sure he can dust his glove off and the Jays have a pretty good glove as a late inning replacement in Smoak. If there was a deal north of 100M for him out there I believe he would have signed by now. As long as he stays in the 90-100 for 4 years range I think the Jays are still players. They made the offer of 80M and I’m sure if he receives something better he will give the Jays a chance to counter. He loves Toronto. Their offer is the floor for EE. Anyone who goes past 100M is crazy. I think the Jays have played their hand well so far. The initial offer was not insulting. The years are there and I’m sure the jays have some upward mobility on the $

Until the new CBA is in place, and teams know what the soft cap is, I am sure that there are some teams hesitant to possibly cross that line. Boston would be one of those. For those players who are going to be at the high end of the market, and wish to play on a contender (many of them close to the soft cap already), waiting will likely provide a larger host of suitors.
Nick4747
Personally I feel that teams are waiting to see what happens to the qo more than the luxury tax. We’ve seen what the qo does to players markets if it changes I think more teams get involved. Monty as far as asking morales to play the field the rest I guess you want him to play 40-50 games in the field I just don’t see it he’s played 12 games last year 9 the year before that the last time he’s played more than 31 games in the field was 2010 and that was before that leg injury. Depending on it for 3 years is asking for it especially on turf with a guy with leg injuries.
stormie
If the QO rules are changed, that surely wouldn’t take effect until next offseason.
Nick4747
They’re negotiating it now we’ll see.
stormie
Yeah, I guess it would depend on the rule change, it’s possible it could be implemented this year if it’s not seen as being detrimental to anyone. But if the new rule is to remove draft pick compensation entirely for example (rather than just remove the draft pick cost from the signing team), then there’s no way they would usher that in immediately and just say “sorry to the teams that offered QOs and maybe didn’t try resigning their players because of them, but you’re getting jack squat now for losing your player.”
Nick4747
It kinda seems more that they wouldn’t want a team to lose some sort of compensation i feel and haven’t heard otherwise teams will get compensation but players won’t get screwed which is the way it should be.
astrosfan4life
If the Astros offered 3/$60-70m I wouldn’t be upset. Yes it’s a huge risk, but with our short left field it’s a gamble worth taking. I wouldn’t commit to 4 years, I’m not even real comfortable at 3! Someone will overpay for him, might as well be Houston and put him at first to ensure rotundo AJ Reed doesn’t bring his deplorable offense back in 2017.
Monty725
He won’t take anything short of 4 years and I don’t blame him.
LAnation
Have you guys heard yet? He’s already a Red Sox. Good signing for the Sox. Much better than what the braves have been doing.

Ignore the troll
Monty725
If the Red Sox wanted him that badly they would have signed him by now. I don’t think they are as interested as the media leads us to believe but I am sure they will try to bid the Jays up
stymeedone
I thought the Angels had signed him, lol.
basilisk4
Another guy who falls into the category of “if he could play a position, I’d love to have him.”
bravosfan4life
ID rather my braves go get this guy than batista
jimmertee
EE is only worth what teams will pay for him. There is a reason why the jays didn’t go higher than they did, most old guys break down and are worthless. Guys like Nelson Cruz are rare or getting help to stay healthy. I wouldn’t give him more than 3 years and whatever the going rate is for an aging slugger.
stryk3istrukuout
Nah, he’s getting at least 100 million. Maybe up to 150 over 5 years if it turns to a bidding war.
One Fan
He is not getting anywhere close to $30 million per year

Doesn’t make sense to sign with Jays since Morales signing. Cespedes makes more sense for Jays being 3 yrs younger.
Gurriel a great sign..
