Aaron Heilman Rumors

Odds and Ends: Boras, Manny, Heilman

Links for Friday... ESPN's Jerry Crasnick examines Scott Boras' work so far this winter, as well as his remaining clients. RotoAuthority has first baseman rankings for fantasy leagues. Matthew Cerrone suggests the Mets might want to publicly rule out Manny Ramirez. Interesting WHIFF profile on Aaron Heilman. Patrick Newman introduces us to Norichika Aoki, perhaps the best hitter in Japan. Aoki may end up in MLB, but it probably won't be anytime soon. The Orioles agreed to a split contract with pitcher Brian Burres, says Troy Renck.   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Heilman, Pedro, Twins

A few more links for Wednesday... Ryan Howard said a long-term deal with the Phillies would be "beautiful," for what it's worth. The New York Times' Ben Shpigel comments on the Aaron Heilman deal and its effect on new teammate Jeff Samardzija. Marty Noble of MLB.com learned that Mets GM Omar Minaya met with Pedro Martinez in the Dominican Republic today, but did not make an offer (and re-signing him remains a long shot). Yahoo's Tim Brown has the roundup on the Twins' hot stove happenings. Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog.com takes on the Manny Ramirez-to-Mets conspiracy theorists.   Continue Reading

Cubs-Peavy: Nothing Cooking

6:23pm: I just spoke to a source familiar with the Cubs' thinking. Hopefully I can further douse the flames of the Peavy-Cubs rumors - the Cubs aren't planning to restart the Peavy talks, and none of their recent trades for pitching were related to Peavy. Keep in mind that the team's ownership situation is far from resolved. - Tim Dierkes 5:58pm: MLB.com's Barry Bloom heard from Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush that the Cubs have had "no talks about Jake Peavy since they were well-documented during the Winter Meetings." However, this doesn't mean that talks won't restart. Bush said the...   Continue Reading

Cubs Acquire Aaron Heilman For Cedeno, Olson

11:39am: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says the Mariners acquired Cedeno and Garrett Olson from the Cubs for Heilman. Essentially, the Cubs moved two out of options players in Cedeno and Felix Pie to get Heilman, who they've coveted for a while. The Mariners did well here, adding a back-rotation candidate in Olson and competition for Yuniesky Betancourt in Cedeno. They released Randy Messenger to make room for the pair. Bruce Miles says Heilman will be given a chance to start for the Cubs. 10:55am: Ken Rosenthal confirms the deal, saying the Cubs are on the verge of landing Heilman for Cedeno...   Continue Reading

Mariners Rumors: Griffey, Draft, Morrow

Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune collected a number of Mariners rumors from the team's spring luncheon today. The chances of Ken Griffey Jr.'s return to Seattle seem slim. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said he plans on "taking the emotion out of signings." The Mariners appear to have made a "take it or leave it" offer to their 2008 first round draft choice, Josh Fields. Zduriencik did not say whether the team's talks with the prospect have progressed. The Mariners plan on taking the best available player with their second overall pick in this year's June draft. They will...   Continue Reading

Mariners Avoid Arb With Bedard, Heilman

4:16pm: Ryan Divish says the Ms reached an agreement with Heilman. 1:26pm: According to Larry LaRue, the Mariners avoided arbitration with pitcher Erik Bedard by signing him for '09 at $7.75MM plus $650K in incentives. LaRue believes they're close to a deal with Aaron Heilman.   Continue Reading

Rosenthal On Roberts, Hudson, Counsell

Let's take a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal. The Orioles have their ears open Brian Roberts, whose trade value has diminished as he nears free agency. The White Sox can't afford him, the Braves are reluctant to give up talent, and the Cubs didn't discuss him in the Felix Pie talks. The Roberts market may improve once Orlando Hudson signs. Rosenthal's source says the Michael Young-Jermaine Dye discussions did take place. If you read Dave van Dyck's article, Ken Williams never specifically denied talks with the Rangers. Rosenthal believes that if the Cubs make another big move, it'll...   Continue Reading

Levine On Young, Dye, Poreda, Peavy, Heilman

ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine has some good info tonight. The White Sox are seeking a top-of-the-order hitter, and they've discussed Michael Young with the Rangers. The Rangers asked for Jermaine Dye and Aaron Poreda, and the Sox are unwilling to trade Poreda. The Rangers like Dye, so maybe the two teams will find a match on players. Young is owed roughly $60MM over the next five years. If the Cubs are to restart their talks for Jake Peavy, the new ownership groups for both the Cubs and Padres will have to be willing. Levine also notes that the Cubs have...   Continue Reading

Details On Tigers' Failed Putz Bid

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has the details on the Tigers' failed bid for J.J. Putz: One proposal involved the Tigers sending Matt Joyce to Tampa Bay and outfielders Wilkin Ramirez and Casper Wells to Seattle. Putz was the only player the Tigers would have received. According to Joe Strauss, the Cardinals also pursued Putz (as well as Aaron Heilman). After the proposal failed, the Tigers shipped Joyce to Tampa Bay for Edwin Jackson. Brian Fuentes may be the Tigers' best remaining option from a baseball standpoint, but Morosi believes they'd have to move other contracts off...   Continue Reading

Sherman's Latest: Lowe, Saito, Teixeira

The latest from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Mets GM Omar Minaya recently admitted he did not expect to pursue A.J. Burnett or Derek Lowe, saying, "I'm probably not going to be in there right now, financially. Not after spending all the money that I did on K-Rod." Sherman isn't sold, though - he thinks Lowe's price could drop and give the Mets a shot. The Dodgers haven't received a counter-offer to their two-year, $45MM proposal, so they won't be making another bid. Sherman adds that they are planning to non-tender Takashi Saito. The A's remain the frontrunners...   Continue Reading
