Discussion: What Late Additions Could Have Big Playoff Impact?

With the 2009 postseason picture nearly in place, it's time to identify some of the late-season pickups that can make a huge splash in this year's playoffs. In 2002, the Angels may not have won the championship without the help of a young pitcher by the name of Francisco Rodriguez. Because of multiple injuries to their bullpen, the Angels called up the 22-year-old in mid-September. Rodriguez was able to pitch in just five regular season games for the club before being thrown into the postseason fire. The hard-throwing righty responded to the pressure beautifully, posting an ERA of 1.93 and...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Timlin, Rays, Reds

Some more links as the trading heats up... Buster Posey and Clay Buchholz are two of the better-known players on the list of untouchable players compiled by John Manuel of Baseball America. Mike Timlin worked out at Coors Field and the relief-starved Rockies may offer him a minor league contract, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Dave Cameron of FanGraphs implores Andrew Friedman and the Rays to go all out and trade for Cliff Lee. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer adds Jerry Hairston Jr. to the list of Reds trade candidates and says he'd be "stunned" if...   Continue Reading

Reds Rumors: Swisher, Nady, Baldelli

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has a few notes from Walt Jocketty... Jocketty has talked with Brian Cashman of the Yankees "a lot" and that the Yankees are looking to move either Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady. The Reds remain interested in Rocco Baldelli, but "probably not" Ty Wigginton, noting that the Reds plan on keeping Edwin Encarnacion. The Reds did not sign Jerry Hairston Jr to be the everyday shortstop, noting that Alex Gonzalez is progressing well from his injury. C. Trent Rosecrans of AM1530 also spoke with Jocketty and has these notes to add... Jocketty says the...   Continue Reading

Reds Sign Jerry Hairston Jr.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is returning to the Reds on a one-year deal reports Mark Sheldon on MLB.com's hot stove blog. Sheldon writes "A baseball source told MLB.com that Hairston and the club agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $2 million on Tuesday. It's an incentive laden deal that could be worth up to $4 million. An announcement is expected on Wednesday." Alex Gonzalez is not expected to be ready for 2009, so Hairston will be the starting shortstop in Cincinnati.   Continue Reading

Crasnick On Abreu, Eckstein, Bloomquist, Lowry

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has a bunch of new info. The Braves' interest in Bobby Abreu is described as "lukewarm at best." And he'd have to be a huge bargain for the Mets to get involved. Abreu's agent has his work cut out for him. Two middle infield possibilities for the Royals: David Eckstein and Willie Bloomquist. The Royals also considered Jerry Hairston Jr., but are concerned with his health record. Also, Dayton Moore continues to deal with payroll limitations. The Rangers are "keeping an eye on" Giants starters Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez. Lowry had arthroscopic elbow surgery in September.   Continue Reading

Reds Still Looking At Baldelli, Hairston Jr.

The Cincinnati Reds remain interested in free agents Rocco Baldelli and Jerry Hairston Jr., MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told Sheldon that he has talked with their agent, Casey Close, during the weekend. Jocketty said that he expects something to happen this week with regard to Hairston Jr. The Reds have had no talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Andruw Jones and appear not to be interested, Sheldon notes. The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay also spoke with Jocketty. In addition to the Reds' stance on Baldelli, Hairston Jr. and Jones, Fay notes that the Reds...   Continue Reading

More Jocketty Talk On The Reds

C. Trent Rosecrans of TheLotD.com also talked with Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty today. Here are some conversation highlights: - The Reds are still talking to Jerry Hairston Jr. to play left field. "We’re still trying to get Hairston," Jocketty told Rosecrans. "We’ll have a different look on our club, but we still have guys like (Joey) Votto, (Jay) Bruce, (Brandon) Phillips, (Edwin) Encarnacion and even (Ramon) Hernandez with power." - Jocketty hasn't spoken with Pat Burrell in awhile. They are holding back on that one right now. - Health remains a serious issue with Rocco Baldelli, Jocketty said....   Continue Reading

Jocketty On Taveras, Hairston, Baldelli

John Fay has a quick update following a discussion with Walt Jocketty, providing us with some interesting quotes from the Reds GM. Regarding Willy Taveras, Jocketty likes his solid defensive ability in center field, as well as his potential to lead off. That "potential" depends on Tavares' ability to replicate his 2007 offensive numbers, featuring an on-base percentage of .367, as opposed to a repeat of 2008, in which he posted a .308 OBP. Jerry Hairston Jr. remains a possibility for the Reds. Says Jocketty: "He could end up being the left fielder if we can't get that RBI man,...   Continue Reading
